Prospect Info: Oliver Kapanen, RHC, KalPa U20 (U20 SM-sarja), 64th Overall

It's entirely possible that, being on the inside, Danault saw the writing on the wall and could sense that the team was about to bottom out. He definitely could not have trusted Bergevin to right the ship and not have wanted be part of a rebuild at his age back then (28, turning 29).
Maybe he just saw that Bergevin wanted to be the only guy with personality associated with the habs and knew he wouldn’t get a reasonable offer?

He was delusional but regardless I think that there was nothing he could do in that situation.

Well, he could have just taken the picks from Kotkaniemi and embraced the rebuild. Instead he signed Armia to a bad deal, overpaid massively for Dvorak, etc.

He was still trying to 'compete'. The rebuild started because reasonable minds were hired to oversee it.

Yup, him failing spectacularly is not him starting the rebuild.

Hughes said they expect Kapanen in Laval when his SHL season is over.
I wonder where they will play him. Laval is fully stocked at center though Condotta is clearly less than ideal as a top 6 centerman. Condotta can be moved to the wing or he can take Florian's spot on the fourth line and move Florian over. Either way, it seems to me that Kapanen will be a huge upgrade.

I'd expect Dineen to come out and then Simoneau to move down to L4 to put Kapanen on L2. Then Kidney will rotate with Arseneau when Tuch is back.
I think Arseneau will be in. Tuch too. Kidney and Dineen will likely be riding the pines come playoff time. I hope that Kapanen will get second line duty over guys with no NHL future such as Condotta and Simoneau

If Timra loses today, do the Habs bring Kapanen over immediately. He could easily slot in the lineup in Laval or for the big club.
With Armia only playing so well now that he's injured and Roy having difficulty, I could see Kapanen getting an NHL call up if he plays well in Laval for a few games, or maybe even right away.

Can Kapanen can play in Laval AND Montreal? Is that allowed?

There's certainly a need for another forward on the Habs but I'm not sure the brain trust wants to throw Kapanen into the heat of a playoff race.

I'm glad Heineman is getting a shot with Laine and Newhook. But I also wanted to see Kapanen with offensive players. He could be the missing piece right now on that "second line."

I believe Kapanen can't play in the AHL playoffs since he wasn't on the roster at their deadline.?

He is because he's already on their reserve list.

It's the case with prospects in Europe and college. Since they are on your reserve list, they can join after the TDL and still be eligible. It will be the same with Fowler if he signs an AHL PTO to finish this season.

It's also the case with prospects coming from the CHL. But I believe in their case, they need to already be signed to their ELC.

IF they play a game in the NHL however, they are not eligible to play in the AHL.

But Kapanen already has an ELC signed and played in the NHL this season. He was loaned to Timra.

I would actually not be surprised if he went straight to Montreal, instead. Roy gets sent back down and Kapanen gets a chance to solidify that rotational spot on the roster.

That's what I think too. Management is watching him play during these playoffs and he's fantastic. He just plays the right way even if he needs a bit more strength and speed. It wouldn't be ideal as they'd have 3 RH shots, but he could slot in on the fourth and Heineman could stay with Laine and Newhook. SHL playoffs are a high level of hockey.

For me this is what has to happen. Kapanen like Beck is far more responsible defensively than Roy is.
I'd be surprised if he isn't with the Big Club we need healthy talented bodies if we hope to make a run at things.
We should leave Heineman where he is and let Kapanen work with Evans and Armia.

I know. But when Hughes was asked around the TDL, he did mention that Kapanen would be coming to help Laval. So my guess is that the games he played at the start of the season don't count.

It's probably similar to a CHL player playing their 9 games and then being sent back to Junior. They'd also be eligible for AHL playoffs.
