With some players, particularly Swedish guys, their play tends to rise and fall based on their confidence level and comfort with their surroundings.
We saw it with Naslund and the Sedins......early in their careers their confidence and on-ice play waxed and waned.....and it took them a few seasons to realize their vast potential.
That's why you have to be optimistic about OEL. You could almost see the relief on his face in that media Zoom call, knowing that he's finally out of the toxic situation in Arizona and coming to a team that was on his bucket list for the past number of seasons.
I mean the 'Yotes wanted to dump him last season, and the only reason he was forced to go back was because they couldn't put a deal together. It's not the ideal situation, playing on a fire-fire of a team in a dud of a hockey market, and knowing that if the organization could dump you, they would have. And then being captain only makes things worse.
Obviously the Canucks play far more of an up-tempo style of game than Tochet had the Coyotes playing. It'll mesh far better with OEL's game. And he won't be looked to, to carry the team on his back every night. The Canucks already have a captain and a lot of other leaders on this team. So he's a complimentary player.
And sounds to me in that Zoom call that he's determined to put some of the shoddy performances in Arizona in the rear-view mirror. Time will tell, I guess.
