It's gotta be the surgery. He's just not at a place physically where he can perform like he did last year. Having the injuries on defense hasn't helped him. He's obviously frustrated with himself if you read the post game quotes from him last night. Dude's a warrior and a competitor, so anyone thinking this is a long term issue are overreacting.

But that doesn't mean there isn't an issue right now. LA is such a small hockey market that there is no goalie controversey, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it start to be discussed if Quick stays on his current trajectory and Bernier continues to win 3-5 games for every one he loses.

Given that I think Quick's issues are physical and that only time will help, I wouldn't be surprised to see Bernier as the starting goaltender by the trade deadline. I just don't know if the Kings will shut down Quick for the year, or if he'll take a back up role.

The Kings have one of the youngest bluelines in the league now with Greene and Mitchell out, and they're prone to mistakes, although Scuderi, uncharacteristically, is making a lot of mental errors as well.

Quick does need to be better but it's not all on him. The forwards have to do better in supporting the dmen as well. Look at how easy they made it for Dallas to thread cross ice passes last night. That shouldn't be happening.

Quick is not going to post numbers like last year . That was a once in a lifetime season. You wont see a post season performance like that agian ever.

Quick has to learn how to play with key defenders out. It's not going to happen over night. May not happen at all this season.

Bad move on DL's part to give a 10 year contract last year. I mean he could of waited until this year to see how he responded after winning the cup and see how the new CBA panned out. I don't know why GMs like throwing money at Goalies so early on in their careers.

Hunger? Hey Stanley Cup, Playoff MVP, Big new contract, long layoff, and Back Surgery. To me he always seemed to have a little chip on his shoulder but now with all the love he seems content. The Kings are playing well now but I know this team can notch it up for the playoffs. This team has the talent to make a deep run and maybe go back to back. Let's let this season play out and see if Quick can get back to that goalie we saw in the playoffs.

Simple Problem...

I have had two friends had back surgery and were atheletes... one needed another surgery to clean up what the first missed and took two years to recover with lots of rehab an yoga for flexiability also both did alot of swimming in pools and the ocean etc... He was a surfer/tennis player and snow boarder and when younger was all city cross country runner mostly on hard tracks and streets not good on your back. Two of those are very hard on the back, tennis on cement courts and snow boarding at nite on hard pack like ice!

The other was more fortunate similar sports and only took about a year plus to get back to normal...

Quick is not even a year into his recovery and our coach is trying to work horse the guy! I cannot for the life of me believe this! I was calling for Berny to play two thirds of the games from day one... Guess our medical staff and doctors and coach know best. Or wait maybe not!

I thought he tracked the puck pretty well last night and made a couple of big saves.

The goals were definitely due to blown coverages, or allowing a player to stickhandle right down the slot.

Personally, I don't think it's so much of Quick but our defense. We don't have Mitchell and Greene.

Those two, especially Mitchell was instrumental in helping Quick becoming a prolific Goaltender. You can be Roy or Hasek but a good goaltender usually will have good defenders.

The contract was a reward for winning the cup. If you wait until this year, suddenly Quick thinks that he may aswell go to free agency since the Kings chose not to extend him, He gets his big contract, and we are stuck with Bernier + random backup year after

There's plenty of goalies who had 1 awesome season and then back to mediocrity. It's tough to be elite goalie in this league. Dunno if Quick is part of this group but for LA sake, hope not.

People forget that Quick was a solid goalie for 2 years, then became amazing for 1 year. We are paying him to be the goalie from the 2 solid years since in order to replicate last year, he would be the best goalie ever. He is currently having his first slump for since the Sharks series. All goalies have slumps, he will be fine

Do you guys notice that players are also shooting high on him often now?

Happy to have Bernier, it's tougher to beat an angle goalie than an athletic one because the athletic ones play with more risk. Bernier won't ever lose that skill we all know he has which is amazing angles. It's easier to read an athletic goalie tendencies.

This is a copy of a post a I made in the GDT in the Canunks thread to someone about Quick/goalies. For those that say nothing is wrong with him, I beg to differ.

"True but then we found out he was suffering with a back injury that required him to lay down on the floor of the plane while traveling. Then after the season have a back surgery for a diagnosis that we have not been told nor a procedure that we have been told of the extent. ( I am a health care professional) He would not have been ready to start the season had it started on time.

Don't get me wrong, I love Quick but he has not looked good yet this season. JB has looked better and does deserve more play time. The outcome of the game with the Red Wings would have been much different had Quick been in goal.

We want to win, then play the goalie that is not coming off a back injury and with back injuries you just never know if you will be the same"

I guess we should really pull quick and give it to Bernier mostly. It'd be stupid to ruin him completely over a season.

First thing that comes to my mind is that the Kings are the defending Stanley Cup Champs and every other team in the west want to beat them. They study our system, they study the goalies, they find ways past the grind. Dallas did just that last night. So I think the excuse for Quick's lack of performance being poor defense in front of him is partly true. However, I've seen him miss shots he almost always made last year and that leads me to believe something is wrong with him. The easier shots from the high slot, his position, or his concentration is lacking this year.

A good point that was made was he kept us in games last year. We played good defense last year, and aren't doing so well this year. How do you compensate for a bad defense? Play the other end of the rink. The Kings are hiding poor play with grinding it out in the other zone. It's like putting a flesh colored bandaid on a cut and hoping nobody notices.

Dallas did a wonderful job at scouting the Kings. They slowed the puck carrier upon entering the zone, passed it at the blue line, and entered with speed. Once in, figured out the Kings were looking at the pretty puck and not looking back door. 2 goals were scored this way from what I remember. Jagar entered the zone time and time again almost effortlessly with support.

Quick missed his big save's twice last night that he would have made last year. Last year he would stop the 2 back door plays. He didn't last night and hasn't done much of anything like this all year. Why? Who knows...

Bernier I think is out-playing Quick right now, so play him till Quick works out whatever it is he needs worked out. Last year is last year and it counts zero right now. It's in my opinion whats best for the team currently. The bigger picture, next year we won't have a backup like Bernier so they need to really sit down and take a look at goalies, and what the future holds long term for the Kings in net. Yes faith is on Quick as a contract says, BUT is it the right move or was it done in haste without thinking about Quick's tank running empty or the league seeing the band-aid the Kings wear on defense. At some point, you really need to take a long look at Bernier and figure out if he has what it takes for the Kings to move forward.

I'm not trying to say Bernier is BETTER than Quick, just a better FIT to the future of the Kings. This post is exactly what's been on my mind lately. Thanks for starting it.

Not worried about Quick becoming one of those guys who gets their money and stops caring. Sometimes I have that worry with Doughty (especially when it comes to the regular season), but I think it's a combination of the surgery and the Kings giving up way to many quality chances.

Quick comes way out of the net and gives up some juicy rebounds. Willie Mitchell and greene were great at clearing them.

Goalies always have an exaggerated value (both ways). Quick is a classic example of this.

really huh... so acrobatic Quick is still acrobatic Quick...

his .90 save% is exactly as it was last year too...

wouldnt he save us from "piss poor" defense at times??

has he done it this year?

there's definitely something wrong with Quick...but i just cant find what...other than his surgery slowed him down

Thats Quicks problem, he throws himself way out of position several times a night. Every time there is a shot from the point that he has to come over hard for, scare the crap out of me. Because the puck comes out in front of the net on the opposite side of the net and quick is out in the face off circle. This kills me about him he has to way over acrobatic to make saves and this will and is taking a toll on his body. DL best be rethinking his goal tending options.

I agree and disagree. The only way to get back into "game shape" is to play in hockey games. You don't give your goalie a 10 year contract and shelf him for a season. On the other hand I think JB is still getting more playing time than most of us expected. I certainly disagree with the notion that Sutter is trying to workhorse him (quick).

And yes, you are right. Not trying to be rude but the Kings medical staff and doctors without question know better than you or anyone else posting on HF boards.

When has Quick ever mediocre save a stretch of a few games?

He has played well pretty much every season he has been in the Kings organization. His consistency and mental toughness are the reasons he beat out Bernier in Manchester, and the main reason he is the Kings' #1 goaltender today.

There are two different types of issues: players who stop caring gametime and players who stop caring during the offseason.

Doughty is not and will never be the type of guy who is disinterested during a game. When he is on the ice he wants to win 100% and that can't be said of everypancake. "Everybody," I mean. Not sure why I just made that typo there.

The second is more of a maturity thing and Doughty is doing above average at it for his age without it being one of his strengths. He's not Gary Roberts but not many are.

Geographical Oddity
1. he over commits to one side of the net of the other. Then he has no possible chance to get back when the obvious pass goes thru the slot.

2. he kneels or flops down waaaaay too early leaving the top of the net open.

3. when the opposing player is against the boards, near the goal line, he crouches down on one knee, which opens up the 5 hole and makes it harder for him to break up the "expected" pass thru the slot.

4. He winds up swimming on his belly way too much. Stand up more, much more.

5. He doesn't seem to anticipate what the opposing shooter "may" do, when it's totally obvious what the player willl do. e.g. he keeps his stick tight to his skates or even flops down with his paddle on the ice, when just standing up and deflecting the pass or doing a pokecheck will kill the play.

6. He doesn't always read the game right, by freezing the puck when he has time to pass it to his dman, so he can skate or pass it out of the zone. By freezing the puck, he forces a faceoff in the Kings zone. This has already lead to several goals against this year.

Other than that, I don't see any problems at all.

Quick needs to pump some ice in his veins.. He his wears heart on a sleeve when he plays, it's good that he's passionate but it's also a vice.

Contrast that to Bernier who is literally an Ice Man, the guy never panics when he's getting peppered by shots. I mean he's literally one of the most calmest goaltenders I have ever seen. The dude must have a major Type-B personality lol

I love the number of goalie coaches in here who are convinced that in the matter of 17 games Quick has gone from all-world goalie to not even the goalie of the future for the Kings, while in 7 games, Bernier has gone from trade fodder to the future number one netminder of the defending Stanley Cup champions, replacing the reigning Conn Smythe trophy winner who is all of 32 months older than him. Who needs a GM when we have great minds like this?
