You didn’t underestimate Broberg- the ice is tilted in the oppositions favour when he is on the ice. The Oilers defence has actually been very good.

I agree with you on the offence. I still don’t like Draisaitl playing with 2 wingers who have a combined 2 goals (with Podz having 0) while Draisaitl has 12. Signing J Skinner to play him on the 4th line and losing Holloway who could play up and down the lineup just seems incredibly stupid right now
For some reason, Draisaitl always ends up stuck with stone-handed wingers. By now he should realize that he just needs to take initiative and shoot more at ES. Two shots and two goals. He needs to stop passing to these stone-handed fools and shoot the freaking puck himself. He's a perennial 50-goal scorer. Shoot the puck, Leon!

Both McDavid and Draisaitl have a bit of this problem. McDavid has the problem on the PP and 5 on 5. I miss his rocket year.

Draisaitl has the problem 5 on 5. He certainly doesn’t have it on the PP.

I think if both guys in general had more of a shooting mentality it would keep goaltenders more honest and it would probably open more opportunities overall for linemates if they are willing to go to the net.

The weird thing is that it seems like that would be the easiest kind of problem to fix - it's just physical athleticism, there's no mental component. Makes me wonder if our esteemed goalie coach even has him practicing it.
Over the last year, he's been just lunging with his arms on cross seam passes, now, not even attempting to butterfly slide. I think the goalie coaches have given up on improving his lateral movement to the point where he now just tries to desperation dive with his upper body instead of using his legs to push off.

We have the least athletic goalie in the league. I'm not convinced this guy puts much work in the off season, too, because it hasn't improved one iota in 3 years. He just strikes me as a lazy goaltender who's only redeeming quality is being big.

Oilers can’t play defense so if they want to try to win the cup this year they better tighten things up! Imagine if the Oilers had the strong defensive game that the Minnesota Wild have! I wish the Oilers would start drafting the way Chia did when he first showed up, he saw the need to draft more d-men in our system so he took 9 of them in his first 2 drafts.
The Oilers have given up 2 HDSC’s I each of the last two games. The defence has been fine. The issue is any shot being directed at the net stands a good chance of going in. The problem is Skinner.

The linemates have been open. Several times a game because Leon see's double coverage. The wingers don't finish shit. You could park even Foegele and McLeod with Leon for 16games and they might have a combined 10G. Actually this season they have that without him. But this was the big "offensive improvement" we were getting with Skinner and Arvid. These were the two that were going to complete our offense is what posters were saying in July. People have to dig a bit deeper than just looking at scoring stats.

What doesn't seem to be considered at all is it can be harder to play topsix for Edmonton. Teams line match and play us hard as they can, generally. We've had 16 games and only 2 weak opponent efforts. In Buffalo Skinner would rarely see opponents even working hard against Sabres. Teams didn't have to. J Skinner is just good enough to be an opportunist in games played with little intensity and little coverage. He's a lot like Eberle was here. Jordan was very good when this was a bad team and getting constant scoring chances. Soon as Eberle was playing on a club with elite talent he was being shut down more because teams had to play McDrai harder. Not trying to diss Eberle who had heart, just that he could be similarly limited. He's not strong enough or big enough to live around his scoring areas. This is Skinners problem suddenly here. Arvid too albeit I didn't expect much of anything out of him.

Say you don’t watch the games without saying you don’t watch them.

I’d take Koskinen over Skinner as well.
Which isn't saying any of us loved Koskinen, I didn't, he had some similar flaws but the guy at least tried hard to improve and to some extent did. Koskinen was also a fish out of water here and had to adjust culturally as well as on the ice. Skinner was born here and spent all his time being lazy here. It just pains me to see tired ass Skinner haul himself off the ice after going down. Looks like the biggest effort he makes. Anybody notice how when he goes for a puck he saunters back to the net like its beer league. His lack of pace doing anything is ridiculous. I swear I thought he was breathing hard and tired in the third period from all that standing...lol

Re- Skinner. Plenty of evidence that the goaltender problems with this team are with the goalie coach. Several goalies have left and managed to do better elsewhere. Teams like Boston, Vancouver, Florida and the Rangers pumping out good goalies is not a coincidence- development matters for goalies more than any other position. Skinner has some obvious flaws, like lateral movement and seeing through even the slightest screens. Get him a real goalie coach! Schwartz has been here for a decade, was an Oil Kings hire in the Lowe/Green era, and has not developed a single full time starter aside from Skinner.
The only one I can think of is Dubnyk. Who else.

The Rangers get good goalies because they know what they are scouting. The Oilers problem is having guys like Schwartz even advising on goaltending selection/development. So that his deleterious impact is two pronged. Terrible at goalie assessment and then terrible developing them. Looks kind of like a guy where UofA was his highest level of hockey thinking he has the elite league in the world and whats required figured out. IN simplest terms Schwartz is selecting and coaching what might work for the Bears. its too bad..

Imagine Koskinen getting the goal support Skinner has had. Atleast Koskinen could make a key save here and there
Say what now?

sure he could if the shot didn't leave the ice. Short of a circus performer, I've never seen a large human makes themselveds look smaller than Koskinen did when facing down a shooter. The guy was 6'7' and got beat up high almost for fun by other teams.

A lot of revisionist history going in here right now regarding Koskinen

What’s frustrating the hell out of me is that whenever he’s sauntering out of the net he’s screwing things up too. He usually ends up misplaying the puck by passing it out of the reach of the defence man or slowing the play down enough to where the fore checker has time to paste the defence man. Either way, he creates more turnovers when he leaves his net then when he stays in his net and just lets the defensemen retrieve the puck. I brought this up in the GDT last night. It gets overlooked because his performance in the crease is so bad nobody bothers looking at other aspects of his game but it’s just as bad and one more way he makes things more difficult for the team.

Totally agree with this. Skinner on those teams would of been roasted alive
Its like people don't even see how protected Skinner is here by the general play and puck possession of this team. Many nights Skin is seeing something like 20shots. The shot count is often higher because Skinner himself creates around a handful of rebound shots or due to playing a puck poorly. Skinner see's hardly any rubber last night and its 3GA, another 2 posts, Another 3 plays where he has no idea where the puck is. Other plays where he's slow moving and the opponent just missed their shot. The last two games Skinner has seen minimal work. Faced hardly anything. Oilers completely dominated these two games. he still finds a way to give up 6 goals. Skinner gave up 6 goals on something like 5 HDSC. NYI last night gave up 15HDSC and vast majority to the most dangerous players in hockey. It isn't even conceivable last night that Skinner wouldn't give up a TD if goalies were reversed.

I've mentioned the same in past seasons. it seems almost like piling on to list all his flaws. Thing is opponents know them as well. So many plays too where he goes to sleep and opponents try to catch him napping. I swear that open his eyes wide thing he's developed over the last year is to keep his awareness. Strikes me as somebody that stays up late playing video games and then isn't rested enough. This actually was stated. He's some kind of king shit video game player on the team. Maybe he's good at goaltending in NHLEA...guy can dream.

Of course the reason most NHL goalies are quick to get where the puck is going is to prepare and look at what to do with it. By the time Skinner floats to puck, pressure is on, and the D are screwed not knowing what he's gonna do. So many times he gets caught with puck. The reason goalies haul ass to get back to the net quick as they can should be obvious, but isn't to Skinner who takes his sweet time. Its a disaster if the team fumbles the puck. Because Skinner is still wandering back to the cage like Sleepy the Bear in hibernation.

If the opposition isn't shooting the puck directly at Skinner, he's most likely not making that save. If the shooters can shoot high or glove side, it's likely going in. The only thing he got going for him is he's still young, from Edmonton, your wive/gf probably have a crush on him due to the p***y tickler he's rocking. That's about it.

Then he should go to the professional gaming league and leave NHL Goaltending to someone who can.

Check out this visulizer capture of the goal. Total timbits hockey with everyone becoming too puck focussed with the kill shot of StuSkin rebounding the medium-low danger shot to literally the only spot on the ice that was dangerous.

That’s one of his biggest problems.

Most NHL goalies have reflexes good enough to direct rebounds to safe areas. They’ll often kick out the pad even if the puck would’ve hit it anyways just to propel the puck to a safer area.

With Stu he just sits there hoping the puck hits him and wherever it goes after that is left up to chance.

Sometimes the puck hits him and sits in the crease and he just stares at it. It’s bizarre.
