I honestly feel for Skinner and want to like him. The "hometown kid goes far" angle would've been such a fantastic storyline for last year.

But this year, the weak goals - combined with lashing out at the end of the Vancouver game - are making it downright impossible to trust him.
The hometown angle can work for useful players. Of course it doesn't absolve being the reason a team struggles to get results. The org seems to have been behind this hometown kid thing as well really wanting to hand him the keys year after year despite every indication it being a questionable idea.
Skinner had his diehards in the fanbase that supported him unconditionally, and the broadcasts do, but most fans are seeing past it. Selling Skinner by the lb is getting old. We've being lied to every broadcast. Skinner makes any stop he should make and its a "great save" and the proverbial "he had no chance". Debrusk may as well be his agent. Tired of the Michaels "that man" shtick. That man is flat out nothing. You could trade Skinner to a club that is trying to tank.

And you know... the Islanders only actually got to have possession of the puck for that third shot he kicked out directly for a rebound into a goal because he failed to retrieve the dump in and his defenseman backed off assuming he'd get it.
Hardly anybody here even looks at these elements but they're constant with Skinner. Yep.
Fortunately the D do a very good job getting rid of loose pucks as Skinner drops a lot of rebounds around.

What boggles my mind there, is that STU movies TOWARDS the shooter. He does not move laterally to his right post

He moves to 2 o clock first and then to 5 o clock lol

His first move is actually to face the passer even more..It's mindboggling when you watch it even slower. He then gets stuck.
Yeah his footwork there is awful. It's really not even his ability to push laterally that's so miserably bad because when he actually reads the play he can push cross crease. The problem is he reads the cross ice passes so poorly, and his footwork is often just bad when it comes to making that push. It becomes even more apparent when he's trying to make a push after committing to going down or squaring up to a player. His ability to recover along with his body control is downright horrific.

I've said it before and I'll say it again Kulak-Emberson is a championship winning bottom pair if this team can get more consistent goaltending and a quality partner for Nurse. Kulak has been awesome like he always is during the playoffs, and its really starting to become apparent why Emberson's defensive metrics were so good. He doesn't create a lot offensively atm, but can make a clean breakout pass. However, he suppresses high danger chances extremely well. I could see glimpses of it in the preseason his defensive hockey IQ, but he had a sloppy preseason and start to the year. Well the rust is off and he's playing excellent low event shutdown hockey and brings some physicality to boot.

Another shoutout to Perry who is providing excellent 4th line minutes. His hands have looked great around the net this year creating a lot of chances out of nothing. He brings a pest aspect. He doesn't look nearly as slow as he did last year. He keeps this up and our 4th line just might make an impact this year especially if Philp can push his way in there later in the year.

Some other pluses from the past 2 games is Draisaitl is back to just being automatic with his shot, and McDavid is back looking dangerous all over the ice. I never questioned these two, but I know a lot of people on here did.

And then the bad. I hate to be negative about it after a win, but I just really don't think Skinner's the guy. The inconsistency and the way he gets exposed on east-west plays is starting to become too much of a problem to ignore. I think you have to seriously consider looking for a rental goalie at the deadline. A top 4D and a good veteran goalie at the deadline and I would be extremely content. Forward group doesn't need anything. Janmark, Brown and Henrique have all started to find their legs again. Arvidsson has been great lately. Hyman and Nuge are starting to snap out of their funk. Skinner is in a bit of a funk recently after a great start, but will eventually find a permanent role. With Kane back it bumps a guy down the lineup. The forward group should be firing on all cylinders by playoff time and there might not even been enough roster spots for Janmark, Perry, Podkolzin, Philp, and Ryan on the 4th line which is a great problem to have.
Kulak-Emberson is one hell of a 3rd pairing. Emberson keeps getting better and better with the passing of each game. Hopefully he keeps working on his shot because that is his biggest weakness IMO. If he can't rip the shot then he should aim for sticks for deflections.

Henrique and Janmark had some of their best jump of the season tonight. Both looked like they were skating considerably better than earlier this year which hopefully is a sign of some older veteran players just taking a bit to get going. Keep in mind Henrique had a bad high ankle sprain that he played through in the playoffs with a short off season turn around, and a guy his age doesn't recover as quick as younger guys. It could explain why he looked quite slow to start the year.

lol, I was referring to the gif itself.
Why not both?

Can you imagine this guy is pulling in 13M in contracts this season. What a floater. J Skinner is a clutch heart and soul player said nobody ever. He's sure rounding into what I expected here. I'll save people the trouble of looking it up. J Skinner has 1G 1A in the last dozen games and somehow is -5 in the last 5 games. One was an Oilers blowout and Skinner was somehow -1 in a 7-3 blowout. This guy has never been part of any winning team and doesn't add the intangibles required. Career wise he just scores goals and really he's not even doing that. 15G pace. lol Thats basically 1M/Goal. Hard job if you can get it...

He's 12th in the league in high danger chances against per 60 at 5v5 for dmen, and top on the team. Obviously against lesser competition, but it just shows how well he's shining defensively in that role.

If they really did beef up their analytics department you would think they would be very aware of how poor goaltending is effecting this team.

To be fair, he was playing in the top six when the entire team was struggling to score.

The level of play and involvement of J Skinner has had him be punted into the bottomsix multiple times now, already. in that bottomsix almost anybody has outscored Skinner and been producing more. He's not even noticeable most nights.

The question remains that if Skinner is in topsix will he consistently fight through checks and get to chances and create sufficient to be there, also considering his defensive liabilities. Its a non starter that Skinner better produce, because its the only attribute he brings. One zone player that isn't even producing. Theres no other reason to have him. People assume its easier to score with the Oilers. Well it is if the player has tons of grit and will work through better opponent efforts.

Teams played Buffalo as the awful team they are. Buffalo get a lot of goals, and a lot of losses because opponents just expect to win running up the score. Thats where Skinner was scoring. In loose river hockey games. We don't get many of those here.

So after all that the Oilers officially climb into a playoff spot after tonight's win. How long did it take them last year to climb back into a playoff spot?
Last year they were in a playoff spot for the first time after their start on Jan 6th by winning their 7th game in a row. But they were still 12 points out of the division lead. Right now they are 4 points back of the Kings with a game in hand and 3 points back of Vegas, though Vegas has a game in hand. They had even been in an out of a playoff spot previously this year already. On Nov 3 they were in a three way tie with Calgary and Utah for one of the wild card spots. But I think this may have been the first time they were in a playoff spot cleanly. I said this in a previous post...This year is not like last year. At least so far.

I’m wondering if Drai saw Barkov up close in the finals last season and decide to change his game. He was below average defensively his whole career, but he’s having an MVP season offensively and a Selke season defensively right now. Analytically, he’s been one of the best defensive forwards in the NHL this year, as well as dominating at even strength with minimal PP points. Best 2 way hockey of his career right now.

Something happened. He looks like the player we always wished he was. These last three weeks have been the best in his career imo

McDrai killing it never gets boring but this game should've never gone to OT.
Good to see some bottom 6 players are finding their game, really like Emberson aswell, uneventful but pretty solid.

I bet Nashville can't wait for Drai... :snide:

About the first goal as it's been discussed here and quite many say it was just impossible to catch that. I think that even with a good shot these are savable and Skinner didn't give himself a chance with how he first positioned himself (like not realising at all there might be a pass coming) and then kicking himself strangely towards the other goal and turning himself to opposite direction, which left the whole goal open. I don't know what the kicking move was but those have to be removed quickly from his game. I'm attaching a photo that shows the position and angle he had just before the shot.

Not meaning to be all negative, but positioning and moving sideways still seem clear weaknesses.

Idk man, I'm pretty sure @tardigrade81 gets a blocker on that...
I'm telling you. That one I would have saved.

I'll give Skinner credit when it's due. Last year he could get hot. This year I have yet to see it , and he is definitely the weak link to the team. If we have a first round exit in the playoffs it's definitely from weak goaltending. Some people don't want to admit it but it's true

If the oilers had Sorokin or Shesterkin, or Oettenger, or myself. They would be unstoppable

There are about ~50 goalies in the league who would be a clear upgrade on Skinner.

Lol that's ridiculous but I'm.aware that there's an extreme Skinner hatred on this board so I digress.

Not that saying that he's great btw, he certainly has his flaws, but he's been an average #1 for 2 seasons here whether some of you want to believe it or not. 50 clear upgrades. Laughable

Great game from McDrai and the team...I am also asking myself how on earth can the movement of Skinner be so bad.
But it is what it is unfortunately.

Waiting for McD #1000...I think the mayor of Nashville will assist/score also on this point.

How are the chances to get a good goalie on the trade deadline?
Just imagine Sorokin on this team.

Let's just win some games in a row...a winning streak is due.

McD seems to be back...good news.

Weird game. The Islanders basically looked like ass. Patrick Roy maybe didn't get the L.A.-memo that the 1-3-1 just does not work against Edmonton. And especially with Barzal out, the Isles just did not have enough offense and did not look like they even wanted to score most of the time. And their PK was the most anemic I've seen in a while. Just sitting back and letting the Oilers run roughshod.

The GOOD:
-- McDavid was heroic. It's easily his best game of the season, and actually I think it was his best game of the past two seasons. I did not see much of this McDavid last season, when he was clearly injured much of the season. So great to see back on c.2021-2023 form.
-- Draisaital was also wonderful.
-- Emberson is looking much better these days, defensively. (His shot, however, makes Ryan Smyth's muffin slapshot look like Al MacInnis's.)
-- Bouchard very good, minus one or two weird defensive plays.
-- The overtime shift by Nuge, Ekholm, and (was it?) Bouchard (?). I loved Ekholm's effort to keep the puck in and wear down the defenders, and also Nuge's quick decision to make the line-change. Doing those two things allowed McD and Drai to come on ice with already-tired defenders, which means automatic goal.

The BAD:
-- Derek Ryan makes the odd good pass, but I really think he needs to just retire. He's too slow and, worse, he is starting to process the game slowly. Certainly no sense playing him and Perry all the time. One Grandpa needs a rest every night, just about.
-- Jeff Skinner. Why did they acquire this player -- knowing he's a talented, but one-dimensional scorer -- just to barely play him, thus rendering him ineffective? He barely saw the ice in this one and did not look good. But it's hard to look good when you're sitting on the bench, cold.
-- Stu Skinner: I thought Skinner was good the past few games (or 'good enough', at least), but not in this one. None of the three goals were of the stinky-bad variety, but at the same time each (esp. the latter two) were stoppable.

It's not that either of the current goaltenders is particularly bad; it's just that on nearly every night the opponent's goaltender is better -- especially on home ice.

Anyway, glad to see the Oilers score 11 goals in two games, which they really needed. But they're still struggling to to score on home ice.

No one should be shocked with Skinner at this point. Been saying it for 2 years he’s the worst goalie in the league.

He has the worst goalie fundamentals in the league. Can’t react, can’t move, cant read a play.

He’s not just going to get better, because all the things you need as a goalie are the worst you will ever see.

Average? What criteria do you base that assessment on?

Based on save percentage (using Quant Hockey as a source) he is

Current season - 54th of 74 goalies with any minutes played. Bottom 1/3 of league

2023-24 - 31st goalie out of 64 players

As for parsing this data based on only looking at #1 goalies, that is challenged as many teams run tandems and determining who is the true #1 is isn’t clear. If you do a secondary sort on minutes played maybe you can get a tighter look but i don’t think it elevates him much just from a visual look of the raw data. (i don’t have the tools to migrate the data into excel to do that additional sort).

But i don’t think he’s even average.

The compound V shot McDavid took after his ankle injury is kicking in. He's back to Homelander status. Draisaitl is the team MVP so far.
Used to think a better second pairing RD would help the G, but now I think the G is more of the cause and a better goalie will make the RD look better.

It looks like Jeff Skinner has the worst +/- on the team at -6.

It might still be too early to render a verdict on the acquisition, but so far it doesn't look like he's fitting into the team well.
