Confirmed with Link: Oilers sign David Tomasek

An alright signing, I understand why the oilers are looking everywhere they can for players with how empty their farm is. But I mean he's 29, not a lot of growth going to happen with him. Its only a year so not a lot of risk, I kinda just wish they would stop filling cap with these older players trying to squeeze whatever they can from them.

This team is already old, some youth and speed would be ideal. Also having more cap space is probably more valuable for next years deadline and the future to add meaningful players than just bringing in old players who dont fit anywhere else. Maybe im wrong, hopefully he has a fantastic year.
They will dump a bunch of players in the offseason. Skinner did not work out and will be gone. Brown may be gone. Perry may be gone. One of Henrique/Arvidsson may get traded too. Neal's 2M buyout is gone. So there is a space to take a chance. At worst he gets waived and goes back to Europe. At best, maybe they get themselves a top 6 forward for the price of Podkolzin.

Skinner looked really good with McDavid and Draisaitl at different parts of the season. Knob inexplicably separated Skinner and Draisaitl after they started clicking the second time together, and McDavid got hurt just as him and Skinner were heating up. Skinner played most of last game on a line with Janmark and Brown: two guys who are absolutely worthless offensively since the break. I'd love to have Skinner back under the same deal...but I wouldn't be surprised if he never wants to play for Knob again.

He would have to be nuts to sign here unless he becomes a playoff Cinderella story.

That guy will always have a place in my heart after he scored a penalty shot against the Flames and pretended to do the Rittch stick flip.

Also that gangster slap shot goal (but time expired). Wasn’t that also vs the Flames?

Very low risk, high upside move with this signing. Exactly they type of of move they should be making to to fill out the bottom end of the roster and depth in the AHL. Now just do it 5 or 6 more times please. :DD

I hope this doesnt mean the org is casting away another young player in Philp, for an older player. I don't think it does, but it's in the back of my mind. I know we need to restock the cupboards, though.

I think there is a good chance Philp will be in the NHL next year regardless whether he's an NHL caliber or not. This team won't have much cap space after giving raises to Draisaitl and Bouchard.

It’s a smart thing to do…
To be determined.

But I’m mostly just having a bit of fun. Although it does seem odd to me to be signing a guy like this to an amount greater than can be buriable in the AHL, even if that amount is only $50k. For a cap team even something that small can matter. A year or two ago I believe the Oilers started a season with less than $1k in cap space.

I don’t agree it’s to be determined. The Oilers have little in the cupboards and need to take swings like this to try and make up for it. If they don’t work out it was still a necessary risk imo.

I would imagine there was a tiny bidding war for him leading to the extra 50k. Still very little risk.

50k could be the difference between being able to run a 22 player roster vs a 21 player roster.

Is it a small risk? Sure. Could it still have an impact? Absolutely.
