The Oilers (like the Leafs) success or failure in the post season has been and always will be this:

Acquiring TALENTED bottom six/bottom three players that can help shoulder the load for a deep playoff run when their top lines and pairs get shut down by opposing teams.

Its really as simple as that.

The Leafs haven't done this for EONS (I need to analyze them this season to see if this has changed but I'm not holding my breath.) and I'm curious to see if the Oilers have not only realized this one simple fact but have taken steps to shore up their depth.

This is ridiculous and untrue. If he was drafted by a competent franchise he’d probably have 2 or 3 cups by now and nobody would say dumb shit like this.

Is McDavid’s personality the reason Nurse can’t defend yet gets paid like he’s one of the best in the world? Is it McDavid’s poor leadership that’s causing their goaltending to be so bad? Or is it his lack of being able to “inspire” his teammates that’s caused Edmonton’s depth to be horribly inadequate for the last decade?
It’s called Team defence, and it starts with the leaders who are on the ice for half the game…
A little back checking would go a long way. Maybe they had an excuse when they truly had no depth and were the only ones who could create offense, but they’ve got some now so really no excuses. McDrai would just prefer to pad their stats. It’s a loser mentality that will rub off on the rest of the team.

Two goals on tip ins in right in front of the net and a goal on a two on nothing breakaway. Then a fourth line player beating the Oilers top D wide. The problems go a lot deeper than the goalie. The D is just not very good. But I agree it’s not really on McDavid.

A goalie is going to have to make a few high chance saves. Ultimately Skinner faced just 16 shots. It’s not like he was bombarded.

Agreed. Both the D and goaltending are well below average. Last night was more on the D though. You can’t have your ‘shut down’ pair both go for a skate in the other teams zone and give up a 2 on nothing breakaway in a close game.

Oilers should be using draft picks as currency to go out and trade for and G. Ship out bad contracts as part of the deal so you’ve got cap space. They have to be in win it now mode.

Did they make a big mistake not getting someone like Erik Karlsson? A chance like that won't come again and they blew it.

There is a huge shitshow to mock right now, Oiler management and the team they built around McD.

Truth. The core problem is that Holland tried to build a team around McDavid and Draisatl, instead of building a team of which they were a part. So the Oilers end up with a team that has two effective lines if McDavid and Draisatl are split, but if the Oilers get behind then they are combined as McDrai and then the Oilers only have one effective line that is inevitably exhausted late in the game. Also, when they get into the playoffs, the Oilers start facing teams with some pretty good defenses that maybe can't shut down the McDrai line entirely, but can keep it under control just enough for their other lines to beat the non-McDrai lines.

Then you get to defense where the Oilers don't seem to have any good lines, but simply different flavors of average to bad ones. Throw in a couple of very average (to be kind) goalies, and the defense becomes a sieve. Credit Woodcroft with the good sense to see that the Oilers' defense scheme was also bad and try to move to a new one (ironically, the Cassidy scheme), but he just doesn't have the personnel to make that work effectively.

So, what the Oilers end up with is a very exciting regular-season team where McDavid and Draisatl try to (and regularly do) simply outscore the opposition, but as they go deeper into the playoffs these fault lines metastasize into canyons and the team finally hits the wall. That has nothing to do with McDavid and Draistatl who are doing their job very well, and everything to do with a fundamentally awful construct by Holland that is not going to be fixed anytime soon. Note that this seems to be the root cause McDavid's frustration: He (and Draisatl) are doing everything they need to do, but their supporting cast keeps falling short and he can see that the outcome probably will not be any different this season either.

My take anyway. Viva la difference.

What goalies are available that are a legit upgrade? Gibson has a 10 team NTC, so pretty such he'd put EDM on that list. Helly would have been a UFA at the end of 2024. He reupped with Winn for $8 mill plus for 7 seasons.
Should they have rolled the dice on Carter Hart and hope their goaltending coaches can help him turn his game around?

Edm, this is their roster. Only sizeable cap hit that comes off the books this year is Foegle at under $3 mill. Eveyrone else making a higher cap has a contract for 24-25 season.

Oilers need a goalie!!!! 2nd they need to stop putting McDavid's points over wins.
They need to start playing boring system hockey that matches the skill of the rest of their roster.

Anything is better then what they have.

And yeah I’d have gone hard after Hellebuyck. We obviously don’t know who’s available and who isn’t but that’s the GM’s job.

I’d specifically look at teams who are rebuilding or who are out of the playoff race early. And it can’t just be D or G, they need both.

Perfect summary!

It's not McDavid's fault that Ceci is in Top 4.

It's not his fault we spent 5 million on a decling starting goalie.

It's not his fault that a rookie that was expected to be the backup was thrust into a starting spot.

If you look at the forwards.. they are good enough to sustain a McD or Drai injury. They are deep and a good core of forwards.

If you look at the D .. 100% healthy they are not good enough. Now give Ek or Nurse an injury.. how does that D Core look? They can't sustain one injury and, fully healthy, are around 15th best in the NHL.

The G are a rookie who was thrust into a starter role and a 'starter' who is closing in on 40 games with the majority of them under .900 starts. I've seen them both really bad at the same time (eg. now) and I've seen them both be good but I've never seen them both be good at the same time. This is not a Stanley Cup duo.

For me.. either improve the D and gamble and risk in a trade. Or get a stud goalie. I thought a Campbell buyout and targetting a guy like Vladar of Vlejmelka would've made sense too. Skinner is good and has promise. So does Rodrigue who is developing appropriately. I eat shit when I remind people Walstedt was on the table. I eat even more shit when I suggest Walstedt will get his first NHL start before Xavier B gets his.

I'm not joking when I say a guy like Adam Larsson would make us instantly better. Not saying to get Larsson but boy would that solidify things. We don't need a Makar (although, that'd be nice) but we do need a Larsson type of solid top 4D. That would improve the goaltending.

I see our D like this:

Nurse - ????
Ek - Bouch
Kulak - Ceci

That is now a good D core but I have no idea which ???? we need to target. Chychrum probably could've done it and was available. Larsson would fill it in. Gudas even on pair 2 as he was a UFA. Hronek would fit in well and he was available too. Karlsson would've too. All were available.

Need to get Ceci into a 4/5 slot. One guy to push him down. Kulak is great in his role and no more Niem's and Desharnais unless a lot of injuries pile up. Kulak and Ceci would be a great 5/6 to move up in case of injuries.

I swear, and I was not 100% sober, that I saw the Oil give a 2 on 0 breakaway at 5 on 5 last night.lol

Note: Feel free to replace my Czech suggestions with other nationalities. I have a bias!lol I was just trying to list players that were available as some always argue there was no one available.

He could start by caring about his own end as much as he does about getting points. Yeah I said it. McDavid is the first person to rush out of the zone at the slightest hint of the Oiler gaining the puck.
It kind of feels like the Oilers are two different teams. The skill players and the grinders. And they play completely different games. It's not a cohesive team and identity.

There are a bunch of bubble teams that are not going to deal a goalie unless they are clearly out of the race by the TDL.
Waiting until then to see if a team like Nash moves Saros, but that also requires Askarov being NHL ready and actually showing it at the NHL level first. As they have no reason to move Saros until they have a better read on Askarov.

The bad teams are:
Ana - Gibson
SJ - I don't even know
AZ - The Czech goalie V?
Chi - I don't even know
Phi - Carter
Mon - Allen

Maybe the Oilers would have better luck in the goaltending department if Skinner shaved off that porno stache.

Of course. They don’t need to make a move right now but as the season progresses they have to do this if they want a cup.

It’s the flip side of having Carey Price and nobody in front of him. He can take you a long way but at some point you can’t win with guys who can’t score.

The Oilers have the best forwards in the league. All they need is “good enough” D and G.

Go get a Ben Chiarot… that guy won’t score much but he’ll clear the crease and settle things down. They need some steady guys who can protect the goalie a little better. Shouldn’t be that expensive. Ditch some contracts along with it and give Detroit some draft picks.

I feel they can be just fine with the roster they have outside of needing a goalie. IMO they need to change play style. Slow it down a bit, make McDrai play more below the hash marks. If they are a PP team then by god they need to play trap 5 v 5

Vlejmelka would be great! FTR... Ingram looks like he might be quite good too.

Ullmark is available most likely.

Canes Pyotr.. wonder if he's available? Seems quite promising.

Chicago has Mrazek who could do it but he will most likely get hurt.

Gibson would be great and might be less expensive as that is a bad caphit.

I will say, to me, that is a plus. I trust the coach and think he will figure it out. However, I think he's been sending a strong message with his deployment of D that he doesn't have enough quality back there.

They definitely don't play a playoff style game. No lead is safe and we need to score 4 to win games. Exciting as hell (I never tune out in 3rd when we are down) in regular season. Not so great when you meet a blue line like Dallas, LA, Vegas and the Avs have this season. Over 7 games those D cores would give our forwards fits! Meanwhile, their forwards wouldn't struggle that much against our D.

The only time the Caps won is when Trotz convinced Ovi, and some of the other cherry pickers on the team, to play both ways. It's hard work, and will hurt the stats a bit, but will result in a better result. When you see your best players play D, you have no excuse not to either.

Until any team starts to play decent TEAM defense, the goalie will look like crap. Put a predictable, hard working, defensive club in front of them then many(not all) goalies will look at least decent.

EDM just has to play even on 5 V 5 and PK, then win it on the PP.

Refs were handing out pps like candy to the oilers last night. Seems like they needed a few more to have a chance . Oilers are such a easy team to dislike the amount of crying from their top players smh.

true, I see issues as well with the Leafs, tied or trailing, man they play GREAT!!! just pure pressure at blistering speed, get up 2 goals, they go full passive and frankly suck at it. So related to the Oilers they need to start playing defensively safer and the offence will come.

The Oilers have always been a PP specialist team.

Take away their powerplay and they may very well be a lottery team, even with McDrai.
What do you mean by "Taking away their powerplay" ? Do you mean just making it forbidden for McDrai to play on it ? Or you mean just based off their 5v5 game (i.e. powerplays don't exist at all) ?

If it's the latter, putting aside the fact that removing powerplays from the game would completely change how the game is played as a whole, they'd still likely (based off goal differentials) make the playoffs based off strictly their 5v5 play for the past 3 seasons. By a hair, for sure.

If it's the former, do you get to take away the 2 best players off of the powerplay of any opponents they face ? Otherwise, it's quite unfair.

We are very much built like the Leafs were a few years ago. Glorious forwards and huge holes. It didn't work for them and it isn't working for us. Regular season world beaters. Although, not right now for us.lol
