Oilers hire Mike Babcock as head coach, DJ Smith as associate coach

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
I thought McDavid would be gone in two years, but with this offseason, the signings, Nurse, Babcock... now I am excited he might leave before then.
you mean how every Oiler basher thought he was leaving after his ELC expired "You can tell by the cringe look on his face that he doesnt want to be in Edmonton" and then it was up after his 8 year deal and now after his 2 year extension. "hes going to Toronto, Hes going to Toronto"This site is so laughable.

I think BigCock (that’s the nickname i refer to Babcock) will change McDavid and Drai’s leadership abilities, especially once the door is closed.

He strikes again

Well, if nothing else, Babcock is guaranteed to make some funny faces and show some emotion. At least he won't be like Knoblauch.

In regards to the quote from Mike Babock below:

I said in the previous Mike Babcock thread that I am under no illusion that he is Mr. Nice Guy and the best human being that ever lived.

But I do want to point out that 90% of all the people in hockey who have been most outspoken against Babcock are all part of the people who Babcock refers to in his quote.

You look at 90% of Babcock's most outspoken critics, and what do they all have in common? Players Babcock benched or didn't give enough ice-time to.

Again, Babcock will never be confused with a super nice guy, but a lot of players most outspoken against him DO have personal agendas or egos involved.

I might've missed something in his history, did he bench Franzen? Bowman says he wants more players onboard, yet essentially it seems like the decision to hire Mike rests on 3 players that had an outsized say in the room. The same player whose president was his agent. Everything revolves around 1 player, the coach with his seal of approval is famously known for alienating fringe players. Good luck with getting everyone on board.

This coach knows there is exactly only one player he needs to placate.

Honestly, would it be so hard to say " yah i crossed line, i f***ed up, i shouldnt have invaded their personal space like that, and i apologize for that and look forward to learning from my mistake"?
A narcissist would rather die by eating their own guts than ever admit they were wrong. I know. My father and mother are insane narcissists as was my first wife.

So is Bill Peters getting hired again since he didn't do anything illegal either?
Maybe. He broke in as one of Babcock’s assistants. Just like DJ Smith, Todd McLellan, Paul MacLean and maybe I’m forgetting some.

Jay Woodcroft probably counts, but he may be more like McLellan’s go-for than Babcock’s.
