Perhaps a divergent view, but....
My son last year applied to the local police force. One of the unspoken rules (which I found out later) is part of the original vetting process was that that a senior cop showed up (it was not quite unannounced but the nature of the visit was not fully disclosed) and the first thing the cop did was to ask to see the prospective recruit's phone.
He scrolled through it for about 5-7 minutes and then handed it over to my son. When asked why, the cop said that the force is looking for two things in particular: 1. anti-cop or anti-government sentiments and 2. gambling apps or any signs the recruit was an online gambler. Either one of those found on the phone would have pretty much disqualified him.
Now, I don't know why Babcock went through the phones of the Columbus players, but perhaps it was to gauge whether they were distracted by anything else that would have been a detriment to a hockey team. Now, I don't know if this was sanctioned by the team - I suspect it wasn't, since he was released shortly thereafter.
