Are those 1sts from CAR and EDM unprotected?

Those could be pretty valuable aka both top 5 picks, could easily be a win for Chicago's future.

I'm pretty sure that this trade wins Carolina the Metro and puts Edmonton solidly into the playoffs. These won't be good picks.

We aren't going to replace LD with cap space. We also aren't going to be able to replace our 1st round pick next year with cap space.

If you get a legit RH top-pair D, I doubt the 2017 1st matters...Faulk is probably the difference between bubble-team and solidly in the playoffs in 2017, Cup contender down the road.

If that's not worth losing LD for, I don't know what to tell you--we clearly measure success and value with different rulers.

Let's not go nuts here. But at the worst the Canes are solidly a playoff team after this deal, even with giving up Faulk, and the Oilers solidly are one by patching their biggest hole with Faulk.

I'm not sure that's all that nuts.

Carolina plus offense (Panarin, Drai, potentially Aho) minus Faulk is a team with a lot less questions that looks a lot more complete than where Washington or Pittsburgh are today. This trade puts us in contention for the top of the division IMO.

Nobody else in the division jumps out at me as all that concerning.

It might be, but it also weakens us at centre both short term and long term. We would have an average sized 1C, a small 2C, an average sized 3C who should be a 4C and a small 4C who should be in the press box, rather than an average sized 1C, a huge future 1C playing 2nd pair, a small 3C and an average sized 4C.

As has been discussed in dozens of other threads, we would be much more open to moving Nuge+ in a deal for Faulk than Drai. And you guys want Drai's size, so that's a non-starter, even though I feel Nuge is still the better fit for your team at this point.

Canes already have a great 2C in Rask. They aren't moving Faulk without a surefire #1 coming back.

They certainly do. There is no surefire 1C on our team other than McDavid though. Nuge and Drai both have 1C potential. I think Nuge is closer to being there, 56 point seasons while facing the tough matchups is pretty impressive for a player his age, but people overlook him as the "new prospect shine" wears off.

Absolutely not, RNH put up those numbers as a 1C getting power play and first line minutes. He won't get that now. Nor will he have Hall or Eberle to inflate his numbers.

We may actually see the real RNH this year, both good and bad

RNH doesn't get you anywhere in the vicinity of Faulk. He might get you Ryan Murphy

That's a bit extreme. RNH may not be a top-6 C that the Canes would be looking for in a Faulk trade...but he's worth a lot more than Ryan Murphy.

The issue with RNH is that he's stylistically the wrong kind of player...nothing more.

Edmonton coughs up Drai, a 1st rounder and Yak for a 1st pairing d-man?

No thx. Would do it if it's Hopkins instead.

4 words though: Cam Ward, Eddie Lack

until that gets upgraded we're not contending for the division even with a vastly improved lineup.

Yeah...we'd need to acquire a good goalie for that to be true.
