San Jose has no retention slots left and you can only retain 50%.

You have to look at actual dollars not cap spscr in deciding pick got money.

At the deadline around $500,000 in real dollars cost a 2nd round pick.
Using a 3rd team you can get 75% of a contract retained.

Imagine thinking you can ice a player with a 500k cap hit

Maybe because that might’ve been what he was owed at the deadline, you cannot go below league min.
I’m sure you can post where this is located in the CBA since you’re so confident about it.

Klim Kostin was a great player for the Oilers and the Oil could use another tough player (seeing that it looks like Kane he will be on LTIR, if not traded).

3-way trade for Cap reasons

SJS; 2026 3rd round pick ($1M retained)

CHI; 2025 6th round pick ($5ooK retained)

EDM; Kostin (cap hit of $5ooK )

Great player for the Oilers to have on the 4th line and a player who will drop the gloves when needed ............ which the Oilers are lacking big time !!!
Oilers need to worry about signing their RFA. Until that is done they aren't adding unless it is for cap benefit

No team is giving up a 2nd for a team to retain about 150K at the deadline.
The 2nd is going towards Kostin and San Jose retaining 50%.

The 500k was in reference to expecting a team to pay 500k for a 6th at the start of the season.

uh, you can? Edmonton did exactly this with Nick Bjugstad.

From an article the day of the trade:

The Coyotes will retain 50% of Bjugstad's $900,000 salary and have used all three of their salary-retention spots for the season. The Coyotes retained $2.625 million of Patrick Kane's contract as a third-party broker in a deal that sent the star winger from the Chicago Blackhawks to the New York Rangers. They also have another $990,000 on the books from former captain Oliver Ekman-Larsson, who is now with the Vancouver Canucks.

Edmonton got Bjugstad at a salary of 450k.

You can absolutely ice a player for under league minimum with the right retention.

I know that.

But it's a max of 2 retentions on a contract and a team can only have 4 retentions on the book totaling no more than 15% of the cap
