Post-Game Talk: Oilers beat the odds

Sportsnet showed a clip of Knob speaking about Pickard after the game. He started it off saying “what Pickard lacks in technical ability he more than makes up for in effort” (paraphrased). I thought it was an odd statement to make considering his chosen goalie Skinner has no technical ability whatsoever, can’t move around and his entire game is reliant on hoping the puck just hits him and his teammates can clear the rebound before someone puts it in the net. Whatever faint hope I had that Pickard would finish the season as starter over Skinner evaporated after that.

Yeah that’s a bizarre quote. Knoblauch kinda been a dummy this year.

The problem with Pickard is that hes small. His technical skills are much better than Skinners.

Are Skinner's problems this year from positional/decisional changes due to coaching, a spiral from bad play and low confidence, being figured out by other teams, or his style/attributes being less compatible with the team defense? Strange that he has regressed so much this year when he should be getting better. Although I know he had holes in his game the last couple years as well.
It wasn't because he was figured out. He was never really that good. He was better than Jack Campbell (lol). He's 'hot or not' and a lot more not than hot.

There was no regression, this is how he is.

The only difference this year is we're not scoring at a rate to win despite his garbage goal tending.

He’s shitty because he’s a bad athlete (in NHL terms).
Full stop.
There's more to it than this. He was pretty good the last two regular seasons and showed very high level play at times in the Dallas and Florida series and his athleticism was an issue then as well. He's fallen off the cliff since, he went from average to slightly below average #1 NHL goalie to average to slightly below average #1 AHL goalie this season.

Maybe the league figured him out, maybe he's even more out of shape, maybe Schwartz has been working extra hard with him this past offseason but he's clearly worse than he was the last two seasons.

Yes.

Imo one of the big issues for Skinner is since Campbell was exiled, he's never really gotten time off to continue refining/fine-tuning his game. It's always learning on the fly as he needs to start the next game.

He got tossed in the deep end without a life jacket and managed to keep his head above water. Well done, but now he's struggling to swim laps vs. guys that have been practicing that and not just not drowning.

Mix in the fact the Oil approach with goalies has also more or less been beatings will continue until moral improves, and you have a fantastic way shatter any young goalie's confidence.

Watch him play. He doesn’t flail away cause that’s what Schwartz teaches him. He doesn’t move his glove because Schwartz told him that’s a good idea.
He is what he is. A quite limited nhl goalie because of his DNA.
I’ve seen it since he was a kid.

I hope we get him, we need a lot of new goalies so that hopefully some amount to something worthwhile.
@1981 Oilers wondering why you're looking at Matt Davis? afaik he's an undrafted 23 year old & any pro team could sign this guy.

Interesting factoid: 3 Calgary born players won the NCAA Championship last season with Denver including BOTH of their goalies. All came out the Edge hockey school/program in Calgary! :thumbu:

So, 4 points for the club in the past 2 games. I'm thinking if Draisaitl hadn't come back, it would be 0 points (or at most 1) and our team would have Calgary breathing down its neck. Vielen Dank, Herr Draisaitl!

The Positive right now:
-- Drai
-- Arvidsson finally doing some stuff lately
-- Walman
-- Nurse (it's rare that he has a good game vs. top clubs)
-- Pickard

The Negative right now:
-- Emberson (what the hell happened to his game? -10 in the past ten games)
-- Kulak (likewise, what the hell happened? Was having a brilliant season, but now -9 the past fourteen games and has looked lost)
-- Podkolzin, Janmark, Kapanen --- a combined 14 goals in 195 games. Not that I expect one of them to win the Rocket, but holy hell that's crappy!
-- Coffey still tends to pick his nose and look like he's passing a kidney stone on the bench

The BIG QUESTIONS
-- McDavid's health (I have a good feeling, though.... like with Gretzky in 1987-88, Connor just needs some rest)
-- Ekholm's age and health (team only goes as far as he and Connor go)
-- Will Knoblach finally give in to reality and start treating Pickard as the club's "#1" (using the term loosely) goalie?

That quote could be a way to say that Pickard is aggressive positionally. A lot of his saves have him hustling around the crease. That would be a strategy of a goalie who gets beat clean when they're deep in the net. Pickard was especially mobile in this game. He wanted this win bad

It does stand out because it's what Skinner is awful at. He makes goals look more impossible than they need to because of his poor mobility.

When did Leon get traded to the NY Rangers?

Sportsnet LOL

Yeah that quote is ludicrous.

You don't see the goalie with four pips on his collar trip over his own feet, face plant, slide too far out of his net, and get turned around in his net like you do with Skinner.

Every f***ing game Skinner starts, I exclaim in exasperation "How the hell did he end up in that position?!?!?!"

Edit for the less nerdy among us that don't get the reference:

Like you mentioned quality of opposition, the vast majority of his games as an Oiler are bottom 10 teams. It’s easier to have quality starts against teams that are competing for the lottery.
Dude. Stop. Get help.

Fourier showed you stats. Other people have shown you stats. Literally EVERY stat shows Stu is ass. The eye test confirms this. You don't even seem like an Oiler fan. They get a huge win in Vegas last night and you're in here crying about Moustache. Seriously, it's ridiculous. And you wonder why people think you're related to him?

Stewed Shitnner has made a career by being big. That's it. He has zero athletic ability, evidenced by him being grossly overweight as well as never being able to move laterally more than an inch. His style is being a "positional" goalie with "sound fundamentals" that can be in the right place at the right time. However, he is constantly out of position because he thinks he's some top tier goalie that can fly out of his crease 15ft and challenge shooters while having zero ability to get back to position if it goes east west. I believe Skinner has worse technical ability than Pickard, despite Pickard looking erratic at times

In terms of coaching, I believe our goalie coach is actively trying to teach Skinner how to work around his terrible attributes, instead of working on improving those terrible attributes. We've seen, over the last year and half, that Skinner almost never actually butterfly slides on cross creases anymore. Instead, he will dive hands first like a soccer goalie, or go down into that stupid scorpion frog splash for no reason. This, I feel, is because he knows he cant move laterally and is trying other ways to make up for it. Other ways than, you know, losing some weight and working hard at pushing off. This, to me, is the major reason why our whole goalie department needs to be fired.

- He is the worst goalie in the league in terms of athletic ability
- He is probably the worst in the league at tracking pucks, making an effort to see through screens, despite his massive frame.
- He is probably the worst in the league at reacting to passes. Combined with his terrible technique, he gets locked into position when an east west happens because his brain is fried because of zero anticipation and then the shitty technique also comes into play
- He doesn't do a single thing above average, yet carries himself like he's Vasilevksiy as literally the only thing he's "improved" is his mental gymnastics routine he uses to justify his poor ass play.

He hasn't regressed at all, he was the same last year. He had maybe 2 good games in playoffs. Our ability to limit high danger scoring chances throughout the first three rounds really made him look better than he was. He still let in bad goals, almost choked the Vancouver series single-handedly, and we saw what happened in the finals. Could not stop any good scoring chance while we watched Bob stand on his head.

Walman and Kulak under contract for less than $6.5M combined is amazing for this team for next year.

Also they need klingberg back soon, stetcher is doing all he can, but Emberson is struggling hard

2 games now Bouchard w/ a monster play to create a goal from nothing. The trade Bouchard crowd must be devastated.

Pickard should be the starter. He has helped steal 2 games. Skinner hasn't stole back to back games for this team in like...ever
"monster play"
was that Bouchard's secondary assist on Walman snipe or the secondary assist on the PP?
Nuge's pass to Drai was a monster play. One touching to Drai in neutral zone not so much.
Nurse has made a lot more great plays than Bouchard. The Nurse and Nuge bashers must also be devastated.
Knob has been winning games with this sad looking lineup. Knob bashers must be devastated that Oilers pulled off a win.
Kapanen's monster assist on Arvi goal was great to see. Kapanen haters must be devastated.

Its devastation all around!

As for Pickard, he got lucky last night. He moves around way too much in the crease and easily gets caught out of position. Rebound control isnt very good either. Having said that, I would take his technical limitations over Skinner's untimely leakiness going forward.

Bouchard is elevating his play, if he can get to and maintain the standard he set in last years playoffs things are looking bright on the back end.
