Thoughts on Chatfield's Takedown Yesterday?

Apparently his off-season trainer was watching in the stands and was pleased with what he saw.

I’m glad someone started a thread on this so I can point out that it was immediately preceded by 3 periods of Tom Wilson openly threatening to injure someone on national TV while taking repeated runs the smallest players on the ice, until he finally came across 5’8” Logan Stankoven… who dropped him to his knees with a right cross.

But yeah, the next guy who deliberately picked a fight with a non-fighter didn’t like being exposed to injury as a result. Concerning. Someone should be doing something about this dangerous behavior.
Wilson doing stupid shit does not make it OK to do what Chatfield did. These guys have got to have some control of their actions in these situations.

And it's not like McMichael is a fighter either.

He was literally shouting at the opposing bench, directly next to a reporter giving a live account on national television, that he was going to injure certain players before the game was over, and then taking runs at those same players. This was all caught in 4K.

The game got out of hand because the Caps stopped playing hockey and started taking runs. Next thing you know we have a thread about how one of them could have gotten hurt in the fight he provoked. Okay.
Very much this.

Bottom line for me is it was a bad play by Chatfield. I lean towards more punishment than the DOPS usually doles out, so I'd vote for Chat sitting for a game or two.

But at the same time, McMichael provoked Chatfield 2-3 times before forcing his hand on the fight. And that was after 2 or 3 shifts in a row of Caps players taking runs and crosschecking during and after whistles.

Nah, Aho swung his stick at the back of Wilson’s knee, then wouldn’t answer for it. Things got crazy after that. Your premise of him only running smaller players is also incredibly biased and wrong, it’s a new thing that Wilson haters have come up with I guess.
'Crazy' like Wilson cross checking Walker in the back to send him flying?

Suspension worthy. Curious to see what the league does.

If nothing happens you will see others start to do the same. This will continue until someone gets seriously hurt, and as the NHL is reactive and not proactive - then and only then will something be done.

And Wilson probably should have received supplemental discipline for that.

But didn’t. So there you have it.

Weird how the same guy keeps ending up in the middle of these incidents and then the argument comes up about what someone else did after things escalated out of control. It’s almost like the common element actually needs to be addressed.

Yeah I don’t really know how to add to this in a productive way, for whatever reason the Caps-Canes games have had some heightened intensity the last few years. I remember a game when Wilson was going back and forward with Rod behind the bench. The teams obviously dislike each other so I wasn’t surprised how emotional it got once the game was out of reach and Carolina was dominating. I actually really hope no one gets injured next Thursday right before playoffs. Either way personally I saw nothing egregious from Wilson alone to lead up to what happened.

I don't know why people saying McMichael was never a fighter. Why does that matter? Chatfield doesn't fight. He had 4 fights in juniors, 2 in the AHL, 3 in the NHL (two of those in 2022). McMichael has has two NHL fights also and one in juniors. I hope Chatfield gets suspended so we can see more games with Morrow.

Did you miss the post just a few up where I replied to you and added a screen shot of him cross checking Walker in the back on a nothing play to send him flying? Check your notifications to make sure they are working!

Cool. Where did he kick his leg out?
Does it really matter when you are repeatedly trying to drill someone's head into the ice if they are using their legs for leverage or not? He slams Buch into the ice on a violent takedown... ok maybe you defend that... but then he picks him up off the ice and does it again. That's actually psychotic.

Sure they aren't the exact same physical actions but the intent to injure is even more present and clear in the Wilson case.

That’s not Buch, that’s Wilson slewfooting Panarin and driving his helmetless skull to the ice with even more force and intent than Chatfield did.

No supplemental discipline on that one, and it got analyzed A LOT more than what happened last night.

Same guy runs around last night openly looking for guys to injure, game gets totally out of hand to the point that a rando Cap goes into instigator mode and gets ragdolled, now we’re talking suspension for the thing that didn’t get so much as a fine when it was done with malicious intent. Welcome to the NHL.

In pretty much any martial art that's a textbook takedown

Hockey isn't martial arts. I don't like it though the question on the legality of the move in a hockey fight here is another question entirely. Will it result in a suspension? No idea but if I had to guess I'd say probably not. Should it be something the league looks at especially in terms of player safety going forward if only from a perspective of clarifying things? 100%
