You can also spin it as a guy who doesn’t want to uproot his family a second time.

Would Marleau want to do that again to his family? If it’s to a team where he can win I think they would do it for their dad. But to just simply play another season, is that worth it?

That's fair. What's not is the boring, "Detroit is a shithole" take by folks who've never been there, when Detroit does a pretty good job of retaining the players who end up here.

The whole Marleau speculation is 100% dependent on what he decides to do with regards to playing next season. If he doesn’t it’s pretty easy for the Leafs to send a 3rd or something to AZ to take the cap hit like Detroit did with Datsyuk.

If he wants to continue playing then the issues are finding a good team for him to go to that he wants to play for and one that wants him for a certain cap hit. Leafs could retain a bit and send him to an AZ to retain kore cap then flip to his final destination for a fina cap hit to that team of around $2.5 million or so.

But that’s a lot of ifs and having things align right for that to happen.

Don’t see any way he plays for abottom feeding team to just finish out his contract. No benefit to him for asking his family to make another move in 2 years.

If i'm Marleau i tell Dubas to stuff it. He came to TO to try to win a cup. Why would he agree to leave when they are a perceived (albeit a weak) contender? He's playing out that contract.

I love when that contract was signed and everyone said “lol 3 years is idiotic” and Leafs fans said “nah nah it’s fine”. Looks silly now.

maybe we wait to see if it actually becomes a problem?

bobby mac had the leafs fitting under the cap with matthews getting 11.5 and marner 10.
no room to keep gards but oh well.

Marleau is producing at 0.5 pt/game on a 6.25M dollar contract, and will be 40 years old next season and a NMC.

That's near impossible to offload. Marleau would decline a trade to bottom feeders who can afford to absorb his caphit. The teams he would accept a trade to can't take on that massive caphit.

1.25 mil in real cash. impossible? HAHAHA

Marleau will get 20g/40pts and a team will easily take him with a sweetner.

yotes get marleau and 3rd for C prospect. helps em get to the cap floor. gives em a vet to mentor keller/galchneyuk. they get a guy that can still play

Marleau won't waive for Arizona unless he's going to retire and I sincerely doubt he is retiring even after this contract expires.

Unless Marleau made a wink wink deal when he signed his current contract and TOR finds a suitor, he will be a Leaf next year.

Define suitor? By wink wink he retires then that’s easy to do.

But if he wants to play then it really comes down to any of the few places Marleau would want to go actually wanting him at a certain price level cap wise.

At his age and career earnings there’s no reason to just go and play somewhere and ask the family to move again. Only do that if you can accomplish something like have a shot at the cup. Another 40 point regular should not mean much to him at this point.

He can't be bought out by another team after July 1st. Would have to be traded before his signing bonus is paid out.

Then the hypothetical team that buys him out is going to pay $3.83m to buy him out--a savings of $417,000. Factor in that team would then need a roster player to replace Marleau at the league minimum salary of $650,000--and more likely at least an ELC contract at $800,000+ and the team buying out Marleau is going to end up spending $4.6m or so to save no cap space, when instead they could simply pay Marleau $4.25m to play for them.

A team that has an arbitrary case at hand could buy him out after July 1, no?

No. There are restrictions on what players are eligible to be bought out during the post-arbitration second buyout window.

One of those restrictions is that the player to be bought out must have been on the team roster since the most recent trade deadline.

The lack of respect by Leaf fans just casually throwing out a guy as classy as Marleau. He came to Toronto to win a Cup. He's got one more year left maybe in his career and people think he should just do the Leafs a solid and go elsewhere.

Just FYI, Sharks don't have room for Marleau anymore and frankly do not want him back. He's a legend, but he left, and we have moved on, we are not going back now. If he wants we will give him a 1 day contract once he's done to retire a Shark, but that's the extent of it.

I think there is a .1% chance the Sharks agree to take him back, so I wouldn't get your hopes up. We have to re-sign Karlsson, Pavelski, Donskoi, Meier, and LeBanc this off-season, we don't have room for Marleau.

There is a reason that Doug Wilson declined to match the deal Toronto offered, and Marleau has not proven him wrong so far.

I'm pretty sure that Marleau is going on LTIR or retiring after July 1 at which point he will be "traded" to a team like Ottawa to hit the cap floor but never leave his home or family in Toronto, aka the Datsyuk / Hossa special

Handshake agreement to Orpik Marleau

Marleau+Brown to DET for 2019 4th

TO pays signing bonus, DET buys out Marleau

Marleau re-ups in Toronto for 1yr/xxM (doesn't really matter)

TO saves cap, retains Marleau

It may take more sweetener than that, or a lower value pick (7th RD probably) - Detroit is doing two distinct things here -

1 - helping TO with their cap problem, and
2 - taking on 2.08M of dead cap space for 2 seasons

We can take on Marleau, sure. Just give us your 1st 2020 + Liljegren and you're Marleau free.

Unlikely Detroit buys out Marleau. They can absorb his cap hit next year easily. They'll have to pay Mantha and Athanasiou in 20/21 though.

Trade is dead in the water then because zero chance Marleau waives if he actually has to play in DET rather than going back to TO

Holland may be alot of things, but he isn't a homehomewrecker.

Marleau has a beautiful adopted baby boy Auston that he absolutely cherishes.

Marleau ain't waiving.

He was brought in to be a mentor for the kids. I’m a sharks fan and hated to see him go. Matthews and Marner, especially Marner are living up to their potential, it’s great for them to have a veteran potential HOF player to teach them the ropes. He’s a good 3rd liner now but can play in the Top 6 if needed. Has a ton of playoff experience. Babcock loves him. He’s not going to waive, the man left the only team he played for to join the leafs because he thinks they will win the cup.
