I think a problem arises with who those guys have to be paired with, their limitations in skating and with the puck limits who can be paired with either one of them.
That's why Greene really only looked good when paired with Martinez. When Greene and Muzzin were together that pairing was a mess.
I find that the only dman capable of playing with McNabb is Doughty. After Drew, I really don't see any options that are a good fit. Doughty can play with anyone, unfortunately McNabb can't do that.
Muzzin can play with Doughty or Martinez. Martinez seems to be the most versatile dman given his ability to play the left or right side, but he's also been prone to taking some big hits that have taken him out for stretches.
As we've witnessed the past couple of seasons, the Kings are an injury or two away from having their blueline look like a complete mess.

I would rather Matt Greene be gone for good. But with that said, the Kings have to replace what he does well.
Right now the Kings don't really have a PK specialist like Greene (Other than Doughty) or a Net Clearing guy (Doughty is not even really good at that).

I think that's more a team construction problem though, really.
McNabb was pressed into hard minutes before he was truly ready and there was only one capable RHD on the roster.
As you said Martinez can swap sides pretty well but a lot of d-men can't. That doesn't make them bad or unadaptable d-men, it's just much, much harder to do things from a different side and angle for some people. I LOVE playing LHD even though I'm a righty because I have no issue getting pucks off the boards on my backhand, but a ton of others REALLY struggle with that--and at a higher level I'm sure I'd get murdered for it because my default puck protection stance would be backhand rather than forehand. you can even see that happen to Marty at times, he has to push the puck ahead on his backhand while he has a forechecking closing the gap from behind and another guy bearing down on him hard and fast. There's a reason coaches like the LHD-RHD model even if a guy is comfortable and good on his offside.
We saw Muzzin play a handful of games on the other side and it was laughable. It just doesn't work sometimes.

I was hoping Luke Schenn could salvage something. At least be a Greene replacement.
But Schenn even failed at that, not a good PK guy, also terrible in front of the net.

Yeah, for a guy who couldn't cover much ice, he was remarkably bad at protecting the ice he DID cover.

There were many instances where Schenn stood and watched as the man he should be covering scored. Or how often he'd screen Quick. He really is one of the dumbest players in the NHL, such low awareness of his surroundings.

Who wouldn't like to be able to add the potential of Trouba for just Martinez, but why would the Jets do that though? Muzzin makes the same amount as Martinez, and has more potential. If you're getting Trouba because he's anywhere from a #1 to #3 in the worst case, the Jets know that too. If Muzzin was making $6m or $7m, then ok. If he's making $4m though, why wouldn't Winnipeg ask for him? Even with a 1st round pick involved. What do Forbort and Shore add to it that makes Martinez more attractive?
It would be great to have Doughty, Muzzin, and Trouba as the top 3, but I think that's based on being a Kings fan. If you had Trouba, are you trading him for Martinez, an undetermined 1st, and what are just a couple guys at this point?

Of course not. Trouba is a pipe dream unless WPG really, really likes Martinez.
I do think Martinez has more value around the league than we attribute him around here though.

I don't have much of a problem with the Lucic trade even if he walks, though. At least he played an entire year and put up some points in the regular season. That's something. That was a good deal when DL made it. Boston retained 50%, remember. Kyle Connor will be a great player in 2-3 years, but the Kings core will be all but out of their competitive prime in 2-3 years, too. And DL didn't know Jones was getting flipped back to the division.
The Sekera trade is just straight trash.

According to an LA Times article written by Helene Elliot a few days go, Dean did know Jones was likely going to be traded to San Jose.
Edit: Didn't directly say he knew San Jose was going to get Jones but it did say that he knew Boston was going to shop Jones and he knew San Jose was going to do whatever it took to get Jones. 1 + 1 = 2

And it's not like he could have done anything about it.
Jones wasn't going to re-sign here period.
And even with what Jones was given in SJ we couldn't have matched and would have gotten a second round pick.
Or you trade the asset and try to get something more which is what he did.
It's unfortunate we can't resign Lucic but it was worth the try to get him and hopefully had been able to do so.
Who cares, the window was open. Got to go for it all while there's a chance. It may be a very long time before we see another Kings team get that close. Plenty of time to recover assets over the next 5-10 years.

That's what I expected and thought needs to happen last year after the regular season.
And I was rightfully pissed off at the time of the Lucic trade that we haven't addressed the 2nd defensive pairing.
McNabb was misused, playing too many minutes.
The other Kings issue was obstruction penalties. If Lombardi decides to keep them, players like Schenn, Lucic and McNabb need to smarten up in that area.

Too many King fans have either forgotten or weren't around when the Kings would routinely trade for players like Cliff Ronning, Anson Carter or sign guys like Trent Klatt to play in the top 6. We finally have a GM who wants to win and does what's in his power to do so. 10 years ago instead of Milan Lucic you would be getting Erik Rasmussen and then sold a line of BS by a GM who really had no direction or thought other than "is he a big guy?" And too many King fans have no idea what Milan Lucic does ON THE ICE for the rest of his linemates but you'll get to see Kopitar get shut down routinely or go back to playing the Dustin Brown perimeter game if the top 6 LW isn't addressed with a player like Milan Lucic. Then people will complain that the Kings offense looks sluggish, we should trade for a power forward.

Yeah, I don't care, he went for it. I don't concern myself over spilled milk. There were crazy extenuating circumstances that really screwed up the grand plan, but sometimes it happens. You could say that if DL doesn't win 2 Cups, he gets fired. But he's not making these moves if we don't already have 2.

and the PRESENT is that we have no prospects, no picks, and a couple of bad contracts, we are up to the cap, and we have a few important holes in our lineup
so yeah i'll meet you halfway, screw the Lucic and Sekera trades and the terrible contracts signed but come on man...stop bringing the fact that DL brought us two cups
