You also mentioned coaching staff and goalie. Chicago lost most of those players because they couldn't afford to re-sign them. If they could, they would have kept them. It wasn't some "Genius move." It was a necessity. They got lucky that their prospects panned out. You want to hold onto Lucic as well but he's not just going to want money, he's going to want term, at least 5 years.

Coaching staff can stay i just said they need to evolve as well and change their system if he cant let someone else come in. I love Quick hes a great goalie but they never gave anyone else a chance and Quick has let in lot of softies in his time here . But i didnt mention trading Quick anywhere. I love the guy , when hes on he is ****in on ! I also mentioned that they didnt keep Bernier or Jones so why draft Gibson when we could have had a guy like Kucherov. Point is they need to change the system. Have u been watching the drafts last couple years ? Dean has fell of just a tadbit

Don't even know what Dean can do. There just aren't any good defensive free agents. Yandle at $6-7 million? No thanks. Trade? What are we trading? Pearson +++? And then the expansion draft you lose one of new defenseman, Doughty, Muzzin, or Martinez. No prospects and no picks for Dean to play with. Best case scenario is dump Brown and Gaborik and sign a couple scorers in their place but that's a lot easier said than done.

This is when you start looking at restocking the prospect pool and looking at giving opportunities to guys like Dowd, Mersch, Gravel, etc.

And they also can't afford to have any more major misses in the early rounds of the draft. Those kind of mistakes can set an organization back over the long haul.

Why come troll? You guys dominated us this series...congrats and good luck in the next round.

Eh, I was actually serious. I was really hoping he would come back. He had dedicated himself to trying to change the too-rough part of his game. I'm hoping he makes it back to the NHL (as long as he really does keep the rough stuff in check)

He was brilliant for photoshop memes.

You guys might need him against the Ducks (or Preds, if they manage to survive).

Well go share this **** with your board.

So let's play a little game. Here's what our team is looking like next season, assuming that all UFAs walk, no minor-leaguers come up, and all injured players return. I also didn't account for Dowd or McNabb resigning. It is as follows:

qIM0503RqG.png

If the cap is $74 million, that means that we have $12,547,273 to spend on two major positions: a top-line left wing and a second-pairing defenseman.

This offseason, bolstering our defense is going to be the top priority. Unfortunately, the free agent pool for right-handed defensemen is unbelievably thin. We're talking guys like Dan Boyle, Luke Schenn, Jason Demers, Tom Gilbert, and Roman Polak. None of these guys are second-pairing guys (except maybe Boyle, but that's not a long term solution).

So, okay. How about the top-line left wing position instead? The top five UFA left wingers according to General Fanager are Milan Lucic, Tuomo Ruutu, Andrew Ladd, Kris Versteeg, and David Perron. Other notables include... uh... Viktor Stalberg? Nathan Gerbe? We already had two of the top five UFA wingers on this team. ****.

We definitely don't have players in the system ready to step up and take on one of these roles, either, so where do we look? Do we try to find a trade somewhere?

Here are some ways that would fix the Kings that will never happen in a million years:

1. Trade Alec Martinez and Tanner Pearson to Buffalo for Zach Bogosian and sign Dan Hamhuis and Kris Versteeg. Super simple stuff, guys!

2. Hoodwink the Blue Jackets - trade Brown for Tyutin! It worked out great with the Gaborik and Carter trades! Eh? Eh?!

3. Wrestle Hamonic out of Brooklyn - The ole' Martinez and Pearson trick again! Hamonic shoots right, and you know what they say: Righty tighty, lefty we have a lot of.

4. Cry

That's all the ideas I have for now, just thought I'd share.

thoughts on Lucic returning? at this point I think we need to shore up the defense more than anything , even if it means hes not coming back. really wonder what Lombardi's 5 year plan is looking like right now....

I like Lewis, I just know he's looking for term and decent money and I just don't think his hustle and energy is worth the price without better production and I don't think he's gonna produce more than he already has.

Maybe he'll do the Kings thing and go to another team and have a 20goal season or something.

Its easier to play younger and less experienced forwards. So, you can play 18 year olds with no experience. At D, its not easy playing an 18 yr old. Not mature enough usually for the position. And, Voynov was not younger than the F you mention. Gravel and Forbort entered this year as 23 year olds. They are not kids anymore, but have little experience in the NHL. Gravel can be sent down next year, Forbort has to clear waivers. Forbort should be up on the big club to start the year, and should be given a legit 40 game tryout. Gravel should have the same if there is room. Scuderi should be sent to Ontario. The Kings have no reason to sign Schultz, Schenn, McBain. The Kings should try to sign RFAs forbort and McNabb. It might not be perfect next season, but it will get things going in the right direction. Itd be nice to have a good top 4 D to be with our main 3, but it would cost something like Toffolli imo. Its doable, but is it worth it? You might find out that Gravel or Forbort would work just fine. At least try it until the deadline, and then decide.

Some positives did come out of this season. I think we finally have a very energetic and uptempo fourth line. So to start looking at the lineup from bottom up, I think we should sign Steeg (if he is okay with $2 or $2.5 million/yr) and have him on the same line as AA and Clifford. The second line is set as well, Pearson-Carter-Toffoli. The third line and first line are up in the air. With respect to the third line, we desperately need a vet 3C. As great as Vinny has been, this was his final hurrah. I think he will be horrible next year if we convince him not to retire. So, we can either try our hand at letting Dowd somehow take that spot to start the season or go with Shore, who we know can't play that role effectively. Assuming we get a 3C vet, the winger positions can be filled. I am okay with resigning Lewis, but at $1 million or less. He is versatile and good defensively, but that is about it. We need to move on from these plugs if they are going to cost us more than a million. Trade King. Plain and simple. I understand hockey and know what Sutter sees in him, but its about dollars now. We can't afford to pay someone more than $2 million if their role is to just be good defensively. I would not resign Lucic. Played good in the regular season, but is not going to be worth $7 million and at the cost of not addressing our defense. Brown issue is obvious, I need to get rid of him, but how is the $6 million dollar question.

Here is what I would like our lineup to look like with the holes that need to be filled:

___Kopitar-Gaborik
Pearson-Carter-Toffoli
Lewis-3C vet or Dowd/Shore - Mersch
Cliford-AA-Versteeg

Team made of Players under contract next year

C - Kopitar 10
C- Carter 5.272
C - Shore .600 - not good enough
C - Andreoff .575

LW - Pearson 1.4
LW - Mersch .787 its time to put him in.
LW - King 1.95
LW - Clifford 1.6

RW- Toffoli 3.25
RW- Gaborik 4.875 - love him but he is glass and getting older
RW - Brown 5.85 - this contract kills us
RW - Nolan .95

D - Doughty 7
D - Muzzin 4
D - Martinez 4
D - Greene 2.5 - not good enough, recovering from injury, hate this contract
D - Scuderi 1.125 - not good enough, bury him in AHL
D - Gravel .667

G - Quick 5.8
G - Budaj .6

Richards Cap hit -1.57

Total salary - 64.4 mil = 7 million cap space to improve this if cap remains at 71.4

Cannot see any team taking Brown. A buyout this summer does not make sense. Next year maybe an expansion team takes a chance via draft or trade. 2017-18 we have Toffoli to re-up. If needed we may have to eat a buyout then.

What do we do with McNabb?- he did not improve at all. if he re-signs cheap as a number 6 and insurance case for Greene I guess we keep him?

No decent callups other then Kempe, Dowd, Mersch, Forbert, and Gravel in the near future

Pray cap goes up 2 mil
Sign Yandle 7 X 5.75 - solidifies defence - this team on the cup runs was built from the back end out
Trade King, McNabb, Shore pick for a true third line centre

Lombardi has his work cut out this summer.

If Expansion does happen and we are stuck with a protected 7F - 3D -1G or 8 skaters and 1 goalie the Yandle signing makes a ton of sense

Kopitar, Carter, Toffoli, Pearson,

Doughty, Muzzin, Yandle, Martinez

Quick

We should try for Darren Helm or Frans Nielsen as our third-line center if Shore isn't going to cut it. Shore is so soft, and he doesn't make up for that with speed or soft hands, unfortunately.

With respect to the 5 year plan, we can go one of two routes: (1) treat this team now as the 2009 Kings team and develop our players while being first round exits for a few years; or (2) do a full rebuild. As good as DL is with offseason deals, I just don't see anyway he can make our team cup contenders next year. The critical problem is that we don't have cheap and young players coming up that are going to be dynamic. We were blessed with that in Toffoli and Pearson, but we simply don't have anyone like that. The best DL can do is get washed up vets and hope they rediscover themselves because there is absolutely no team that will trade a top prospect/rookie in this cap era. The only way you get a player like that is if a cup contender wants to trade such a player for the likes of an established top guy, like Toffoli, Carter, Kopitar etc. But if we make that trade we just go back to square one.

I predict that this team is just going to like Detroit and possibly make the playoffs for a few more years and be first round exists.

I doubt the expansion occurs this summer, but if it did, here's who I keep:

7F, 3D, 1G:

Kopitar, Carter, Pearson, Toffoli, Clifford, King, Andreoff

Doughty, Muzzin, Martinez

Quick

Gonna be an interesting offseason.

The deficiencies are clear as day BUT--this time--we don't have the nostalgia excuse, i.e. don't keep the team together because they were successful and deserve another chance.

Kopitar, Carter, Toffoli, Pearson. Doughty, Muzzin, Martinez. Everyone else is moveable as far as I'm concerned.

Kings need a 3rd/4th line defensive specialist. Burnt Kopitar out having to handle every PK and every defensive zone draw.

Every good team has them. Kruger, Thompson, Boyle in TB, whoever it was for SJ cause Pavelski and Thornton didn't PK.
