Less than two weeks before players report for physicals on the 22nd, with the first pre-season game 2 weeks tomorrow.

I imagine we will start to hear more news and thoughts the closer we get to camp opening.

Top of the list will be signing Sandin and getting under the cap.

Exciting times. Really hope the Sandin issue doesn't drag on overlong. He is more important to this team and their future than seems to be the common opinion around here.
Been by far the busiest summer of my life, to the point where I even forgot hockey existed a couple of times lol. But with beer league also starting in a couple of days it's high time to get back in the vibe of things. Also played for a new artist last week who has season tickets but doesn't like sports lol... told me I can have tickets for free any time I ask, so I'm actually really excited to hopefully go to a bunch of games in person this year... It's usually just been one a season for me. Hoping for a good season, Go Leafs Go

Who are we thinking will get the longest look at camp to crack the roster?

Does anyone know if any of the new faces are skating with the team now?

I don’t follow players on twitter and I haven’t seen anything from the media. They’ll start trickling back to work next week, I suppose.

Really need Robertson to show something this year and most importantly, STAY HEALTHY. If he could solidify himself this year as a 3rd line fixture that would be great progress and a big boost to our crappy bottom 6 depth.

Odd.

Just did a little reading, seems like a pretty ordinary player. Why was everyone so high on him all summer? Seems pretty useless.

probably ZAR, I know he's a on a PTO, but I don't think it's a real PTO, I think they fully intend to sign him and I think Simmonds job is the one he takes
Haven’t seen anyone that’s been able to adequately answer this but why do you think he signed a PTO two weeks before camp if he’s going to be signed anyway?

I agree with you but if he's going to hold out for as much as possible and won't budge on what's fair for the team as well as himself then if he has to sit then so be it. not something I want but there's only so much cap to go around so if its true and it's 2+m he wants per year imo seems too much especially looking at Liljegren signing at 1.4m

prob simmonds or clifford I would assume

I think it does a fee things while keeping the mutual intereds tied together. The leafs need to see where a few things are going but have interest in the player.

For money which would affect zach's contract, dubas has the sandin situation, potential speculated holl and kerfoot trades, and of course there is the potential move being worked on that noone sees coming. These all tie in to dirrctly how much money can go to zach. Wouldnt be surprised if zach and agent were told a range of dalary to expect.

If they commit the contract now to zach it tips us over a bit on cap space and potentially enough to swing any trade negotiations that may be happening. I can just picture dubas tellimg someone on the phone that they arent in trouble they can just run a 20. As soon as zach signs a contract signaling toronto wants the player, the trading gm could try and exploit

Contract slots is another. Whether dubas has plans going on or not we are at 48.. sandin and zach and we are full - dubas could be working on moving a contract.. this keeps flexibility going into season for waivers or of course trading. Personally i could see gms wanting to stay under by maybe a couple for the never know what comes up.

Thanks.

A few things I get out of that though is the rest of the league isn’t looking to sign the player, the player is taking all the risk(which if there are no other options is understandable) and still doesn’t explain why this was done two weeks early.

As far as other GMs trying to exploit, no offense to anyone here but this isn’t fooling anyone.

Could be as simple as the offers didnt come in and now into september players want to get a jump on try outs before trsms dtart filling up their camps.

Personally i epuld feel comfortable in this dpot right now, having the tryout secure no stress about finding one can prepare for camp like normal.

I believe in my heart of hearts there is more than this team willing to invite and like sign zach. Same way i believe motte has offers but it waiting until the last second to decide.. same way i believe rodrigues has had multiple offers for awhile now..

All very possible scenarios.

I guess my thinking is driven by the multitude of posts begging the Leafs to sign this guy all summer and now it seems, to me anyway, that league wide he can’t get a contract.

Matters little in the big picture anyway. Just another borderline player that may or may not last the season and will be quickly forgotten.

It would be cool to get insight on how many moves gms are actually tlking about at any given time..

In a look at our dmen, who goes for Sandin the play. Holl? We need a tougher stay at home guy to replace him, Benn?
Muzzin, yes he is now over paid but to date Sandin has not shown the qualities to replace Muzzin. Both are injury sensitive. I suspect Muzzin now fully recovered from his head concussion.
Gio at his salary is in. Brodie is in. Rielly is in,
Lilly is ahead of Sandin because of d play.
Kokkonen(?), may be the equal of Sandin by next fall.
Keefe has never played Sandin for long stretches with minutes to see if he is Ray Bourque or just another weak marginal player.
I think he goes, his agent knows it. He wants money before he reaches the age where hockey people realize he will never fulfill the promise.
He us no longer a prospect perhaps, he looks to be exactly what he is. Keefe knows...untrustworthy on d, unpredictable on offense, soft, not strong on skates, easily over powered, injury prone. Hmmmm. And never played in the Soo.

No one here is capable of understanding the complexity of Dubas brain.

I think it would look like a circuit board

I hope we dont suffer from bad timing this training camp.. not being able to move someone and get stuck with losing someone

I don't have too much optimism for the upcoming season, but I think I'll still watch the Leafs' games and try to enjoy them anyway.

I could picture Matthews and Marner taking a step back and falling off last year's pace. Still good, but not great.

Tavares will be a year older, and despite his best training regimen he will still be a year older.

Nylander I would count on to be as good or better than last year, which is just good but not great.

Rielly I think will have his best year ever, but even at that he is not the dominant defenceman the Leafs need.

The rest are just guys. Some will do better, some worse, but I don't see any game breakers in there. The Leafs will do well to make the playoffs.

Don't plan the parade.

Hockey is an entertaining sport. It can be fun to watch even if your team doesn't win every game. I plan to enjoy the ride.
