when was the last time a 'top' prospect was traded for a ufa to be?

I feel like it's been in the CBJ-OTT deal for a while now, 3rd best kid, 6th best kid, picks.

Some wild optimism going on rn, at least its a welcome change.

When was the last time a rental forward went for potentially 2 first rounders?

Because it just happened.

First off, waffle asked what they need, their biggest need is an upgrade on defense, at this moment they are terrible defensively. Second, those are prospects, Smith helps them now. Bit of a difference there pal.
Smith might help their AHL team after he's waived. Smith sucks, man.

CBJ is crazy imo. The only way making that move makes an ounce of sense is if they know they're going to lose Panarin and Bob and are willing to lose both for nothing and try to make a run this year. Problem is they're likely not good enough to win. If they know they're losing Panarin and Bob what are the odds they can re-sign Duchene to stay in a worse situation than the one he came to?

The most likely outcome by far is they lose Panarin, Bob, Duchene and everything they just traded for Duchene for absolutely nothing. Horrendous.

the jackets are a contender this year, elite forwards paired with elite defensemen and a goalie who can be very good.....i wouldnt count them out

The conditional first is irrelevant in this trade. Jarmo conceded it to seal the deal because he knew he has no chance at extending Duchene and the Senators can continue to manipulate their fans by falsely jacking up the return they got for Duchene.

The trade looks a lot better with the smoke and mirrors of that pick and I'm not falling for it. And hopefully Ottawa fans dont either.

This is their best chance to go on a cup run for a long time might as well go all in. If Bob and Panarian don't resign they just don't resign Duchene and they still have their 2020 first

How does it work when a pick is added, like when a team does not sign their 1st rounder and gets a compensation pick, does that add to the total 7th round picks?

Could see them interested in Hayes
Me too, which would make things even MORE interesting. Might be just to make Chicago fans feel like they are involved in tdl, makes them feel like they are "not giving up" and trying to further inspire their team.....they've been great lately, but need to keep the puck out of their net. All those future defenseman and need them NOW.......we have a few available, you know. Yeah you, Chicago.
