In Florida Panarin will have:
- No state income tax
- likely a current teammate in Bob
- a former KHL linemate in Dadonov
- A team that is much closer to being a contender with his signing than the Rangers

That's before you include the weather angle. I don't see the Rangers as a front runner at all.

I think it's more likely the Rangers trade for players than they use offer sheets.

Given the possible tit for tat nature, or even just setting a precedent for teams to use them more often, the Rangers are likely to have several up coming non arbitration eligible RFAs of their own, are they really going to open up that potential can or worms?

I want other teams to offer sheet our guys so I don't have a problem with it.

Because it is a rare situation where you can get a player like that for nothing by money. There is nobody comparable available in FA in either of the next two years other than potentially Taylor Hall if he gets there and he has some major injury question marks.
Seems like it’s happening about every season

Well perhaps if you bothered reading my previous post you would see that it is in fact not happening the next two seasons. And if you read even earlier posts you would see that outside of this last year with Tavares top available FA in recent years have been guys like Ladd,Lucic,Okposo,Backes,Eriksson,Saad,Sekera etc.

So no, it is not happening every season which means you have two options

A. Rigidly stick to your initial plan and do not deviate even when circumstances change
B. Be flexible and adapt your plan based on the situation at the time and in the near future

How about we draft our own 12 million dollar player and reap the benefits of paying him ELC money for a couple of years like the other good teams do?
Why not both? Then we have two elite players.

Sorry, normally I'm on the don't overpay free agents train with the rest of you, but this is a very unique case. Players of this caliber NEVER become available as UFA at this age. Tavares was basically the first. The overwhelming majority of elite level players get locked in with their clubs, sign long term deals and if they do move it will usually be in a trade after they're out of their prime.

This is a unique circumstance where the player is legitimately elite, in his prime and will be worth the money. This doesn't have to be viewed as a either/or scenario. We can sign Panarin because he's a truly elite player and young enough to remain so through and help propel us forward AND continue to grow our young players and rebuild. I really don't see anything wrong with signing him.

Coming out of the lockout teams had no idea how to manage their salary caps and superstars were available in UFA every offseason until 2009, then there suddenly wasn't a single one available (unless you count Kovalchuk in 2010, but he re-signed with NJD) until Tavares in 2018.

Remember the early contracts were insane in terms of cap hit%, Chara's deal with Boston was the equivalent of a $13.6M contract under the current cap.

Drafting our own 12M player is pretty easy. All we need to do is bank on our 10% chance to get one of the top two picks! Or to get lucky and happen to find a superstar with a pick a little later. Seems foolproof. And if none of that works and we just get a bunch of good but not superstar players then we can watch as the team gets better but isn't elite and we can go ahead and trade a first pick and some of our best prospects to acquire one of them via trade...instead of just signing one for free and keeping the pick and prospect.

Gorton will not give Panarin 7 years @ $11-12M and Panarin has more 'attractive' locations.

Unless he comes to us like Shattenkirk, he wont be a Ranger IMO

Maybe we will be competitive and take a flyer on Hall.

Attractive according to who? you? Panarin has literally expressed interest in going to a big city such as NY and the CBJ writers earlier in the year all said they were of the belief he wanted to join the Rangers. To act like they are not an attractive destination for him is just blatantly disregarding everything that has come out.

Yes, LAK, NY and FLA. We're at the bottom of that list, the only way he'd come here, IMO, is we offer him the most money. I do not see Gorton doing that.

Why would he come here over the Islanders? Lou has a history to giving big contracts to Russian-stars.

I've been saying it for a while. His best attribute is his skating at 19. You rarely see him flying around the ice or giving effort.

I REALLY hope he turns it around.. I've been unimpressed but he shows us flashes of skill. He might be overthinking the game

Dont mind this. Need to push him. Push him to another level. The talent is clearly there. He needs to make every effort to establish himself at this level. Yes some talented players just automatically have it, but others need it drawn out of them. I think Chytil is a bit in between in that regard.

I like what Quinn is doing. He has our prospects best interest and development in mind. This is part of the process. I think it has helped with Buchnevich, and that is still a work in progress itself.

yes cause there has never been an elite player drafted outside of the top 2 picks

Perhaps you should join the same reading class as the other guy. Because if you had gone to it you would have read the part of my post you quoted that stated "Or to get lucky and happen to find a superstar with a pick a little later. "

Signing Panarin would make the Rangers a slightly better non-playoff team with a worse draft pick. Panarin doesn't fix our defense (which will be a disaster for at least two years and probably longer) or make Hank younger. And when we eventually have to sign all these picks to non-ELCs we are going to have a 30 or 30+ year old Panarin making 11m a year.

I don't see how signing him makes any sense in any way.

This is somewhat ironic given the fact that the guy you're advocating for was never drafted at all.

Why is Quinn doing this now? Buch-Lias-Chytil has looked really good together. I wanna like this coach I really do but he keeps doing dumb **** like this

Really hard to argue with Quinn's results so far, but this bums me out because I want to watch him play! :)

Yeah, but it can't hurt him sitting a little bit. I don't think this year have been great for him, I am pretty skeptical about the decision to keep him around the NHL team. For me it basically comes down to puck touches for these kids, to develop that part of your game you need those puck touches that lasts several seconds and where you are allowed to somewhat run things. Be a part of things. To at the most get a puck deke a little and lean into a D doesn't qualify.

yeah during a rebuild you definitely don't want a coach that holds young players accountable and pushes them to be better. he should just let them go thru the motions

Sure but Chytil and that line have looked good so why is he doing this again
