I do wonder if tomorrow we see a lot of action around the league as far as trades/signings go.

I know there was a few extensions already announced and there wasn't any rules against doing business during the tournament, but with how much the country was paying attention to it, I wonder if everyone backed off and let the thing play out.

Curious to see if Nyquist rumor happens tomorrow as well as an Olivier extension.

I would love that but also be very surprised.

I believe that none of us have supported trading either of those prospects for Bjorkstrand.
If Bjorkstrand brings something to the CBJ that is needed to balance the roster and we can confidently expect him to extend then why wouldn't we? LDBB/Grindley are somewhat redundant to what the roster already has. Do we need to keep both?

LDBB, Brindley, possibly Sillinger and Chinakhov (due to injuries) could be traded. But not for Bjorkstrand. Oliver is a closed chapter for us.

not me.

if we’re obtaining a first in a provy deal, that first needs to be a 2026 first, max.
I don't know why people get so worked up with immediacy. When we waited years for Marchenko to jump to the NHL and people moaned about his perhaps extended stay in Russia. Right now...does anyone give two craps about the delayed gratification? He's here now and killing it...don't really remember missing him on the front end. First round picks are chips, if we end up with an extra 2027, when we get to 2026 that could be really valuable when looking to make a deal to bring in a TDL acquisition for our Cup run...and you will be happy to have it in our back pocket.

You say a Provy deal needs to be a for a 2026 first round pick. What if nobody offers us a 2025 or 2026 first rounder for him? Or what if someone offers a 2026 first round pick and someone else offers a 2027 first round pick plus a 2026 second or third? What do you do?

This is not a sprint...it's a marathon. I'd be fine with planning for the future. We already have three 1st rounders in the next two years, do we really need a fourth?

WHY!?!

Why was Jones “unwilling to extend here”??

And you think Foligno was moved primarily because of money??
I am not even sure what you guys are arguing over. We all agree Jones chose not to re-sign because he wanted to win and thought the CBJ were far away from that and he believed Chicago was much closer. And it was his prerogative to not re-sign here. That said...Z did re-sign here and chose to be part of the solution rather than running away. It does say something about both their mindsets.

As for Foligno, Jarmo reacted to his decisions the year before when he chose to hold on to UFA stars at the TDL. He woke up after the playoffs and realized the opportunity cost was great. So the next year (or was it two years later) he moves out UFAs at the TDL for lots of extra draft capital. The four year run was fun but it yielded one playoff series win and an aging core. Moving Foligno and Savard were the right moves...we did not win with them in their primes and we weren't going to win with them as veteran support pieces. I doubt it was about the money, if we didn't move Foligno and Savard we would have looked like the current Pens minus the fading stars and Cups.

Perhaps??

doubt philly has any interest in moving the player but it feels like waddell is going to go hunting for a star, and konecny's NTC doesn't kick in until this summer… would give up an absolute haul for him.

Better ask him if he'd be happy in Columbus. Feel like I remember something about a former Flyer traded to Columbus before a NTC kicked in :sarcasm:

Unless something insanely good comes up either by addition or subtraction, (and I aint gonna speculate) I'd hold and see what shakes out between now and the 25-26 campaign.

Not terribly original, but at this stage, my preferred strategy moving forward is:
  • Acquire Nyquist or similar player now.
  • Re-sign Fabbro and Olivier.
  • Trade Provorov at or close to the deadline. Bring up Hunt or Svozil until Gudbranson is back.
  • Use the draft capital and players for upgrades in the off-season.
  • Do everything humanly possible to get Gavrikov to sign with Columbus as a UFA.

Here is your flaw. We trade away Provorov and can’t attract another D in the top 4.

Have Mateychuk and Severson played together to any significant degree? Further, we don't know how Hunt would look in the NHL. I don't know how Gudbranson would look alongside Mateychuk either. Sacrificing the long-term perspective because we don't have a nominal top 4 D (except Severson) to replace Provorov with right away still seems short-sighted to me.

Pretty much my strategy as well.

And if we can't get Gavrikov to sign we have to be prepared to push our chips in on a major trade for a very good defender.

Mateychuk and Provorov haven't been particularly good together. It's very possible that Mateychuk and Severson could be a better fit, certainly Mateychuk could be noticeably better next year after fine tuning some rough aspects of his game.
