So... Habs have been tanking for 3 years straight now... can anyone honestly say they are close to being a good team than they were 3 years ago? Anyone watching the SJ game? Tank all you want but neither current players, not the pipeline aspire a lot of hope.

Demidov alone changes the whole dynamic of this team.

Oh man... I so wish, but he so will not. Maybe for a short priod of time. Habs need good vets, and they desperately need a new coach. Watching this team run around with no purpose on the ice, do you think Demidov will make a difference? Sure he is better than anyone not called Suzuki and Caufiled, but it takes a lot more to consistently win. Habs are soft as butter and Demidov won't change that. THey have no system and Demidov won't change that. THey got not 1 and 2 D and Demidov won't change that.

We need a to aquire another RD like Carrier through trade and hope that one of Reinbacher or Mailloux pans out.

Offensively all we need to acquire is a young veteran 2C preferably who is a left shot. We have the assets necessary to acquire that player.

I will trade slafkovsky for such center. A proven center who produced... not Dach or Newhook type center.

We know the organization won't trade Slaf and there's no need to trade him. We have excellent draft picks we could use, plus we have a couple interesting prospects we could part ways with. Our 2 x 1st round picks should be in play once we know what position we are drafting at, we would be ripe for a blockbuster trade. Exactly What Bergevin could never pull off, "centers are not available". We should be looking to acquire a name brand player who is in his prime. Then we have a great top 6, and it pushes better players down to the bottom 6 and we improve there too.

Slaf - Suzuki - Caufield
Laine - x2Cx - Demidov

Heine - Dach - Anderson
Armia - Beck - Gallagher

San Jose has been rebuilding longer than Montreal and they are still worse than Montreal. Why? Because rebuilds don't end in 3 years. They rarely end in 5. The most commonly end in 7-8 seasons.

Wanting it to end quicker than it ever has for a rebuilding team is just putting unrealistic expectations on it and getting mad when they're not fulfilled.

Buy out gally this summer. It’s time.

We won't be able to tank too far with the bottom feeders in the west right now. It's hard to imagine any scenario where we pick higher than 6th, unless we win the lottery. The prospects in the 6-10 range are sort of similar value for me at the moment so I'd just like to end up in that range.

I have a feeling in the back of my mind that the Calgary pick will be used in a package to acquire a center leading up to the draft. A deal not unlike the Dach and Newhook trades, but I wouldn't be surprised to see us offer more for an even more established player this time.

There isn't a very strong crop of UFA centers this year, and we might not be able to attract many names anyways.

They thought he was better than he is, with his speed and all.

He isn't.
I mean, even if he was, he still doesn't fit our needs

Pretty simple, they saw an opportunity to get a young player they felt could hit a higher potential getting more opportunities here than down the line-up in Colorado.. and Newhook brought a speed element that was lacking, and still is lacking, in the forward group.

It was a calculated play that even if he didn't hit a top 6 upside, they got cost certainty over a late first and a 2nd round pick, in an already deep pool and well stocked pick cupboard, and we will see the most likely outcome which is Newhook developing into a 3rd liner with speed, so a new age Paul Byron with better finishing ability.

The problem is that he just doesn't fit a role on this team and never did. EVEN if he hit his likely ceiling. He just didn't fit in any way that would make us a complete team.

As for Byron, we've had too many milquetoast middle-of-the-road small players in the last 30 years. Paul Byron is the type of player you add for 1 million on your 4th line when you're cash strapped and going for a cup. Having him in your top 9 means you're a bad hockey team.

You're preaching to the choir, sir

Reminds me of when we thought the same when we had Komisarek, Perezhogin, Balej, Plekanec, Higgins, etc, etc.
How can you forget Mikhail Grabovski. I still remember his debut against the Rangers. Everybody was so hyped up about the guy.

It actually reminds me of when we thought the same of Price, Halak, Streit, Pacioretty and Subban...

Moral of the story...

Yes we have some decent pieces and prospects, but so do many other teams.

Then you have to factor in some pieces will underwhelm and underachieve.

Nothing is guaranteed.
