Upgrade Newhook in the top 6. Upgrade Newhook on the top pair, and that's a start.

I think Demidov will be ready for the top 6 next year. We'll see about Reinbacher. We'll see what Hughes can do on the trade front and in free agency. We'll have the cap space. But so will most teams, with the cap going up.

I never understood why we got Newhook in the first place, other than than the Quartexx nepotism. Of all our moves, this is the one that made the least sense. Have a small team trade for a small, weak player with a B+ ceiling. How was this supposed to help us in the long-run?

Pretty simple, they saw an opportunity to get a young player they felt could hit a higher potential getting more opportunities here than down the line-up in Colorado.. and Newhook brought a speed element that was lacking, and still is lacking, in the forward group.

It was a calculated play that even if he didn't hit a top 6 upside, they got cost certainty over a late first and a 2nd round pick, in an already deep pool and well stocked pick cupboard, and we will see the most likely outcome which is Newhook developing into a 3rd liner with speed, so a new age Paul Byron with better finishing ability.

It was a worthy gamble. I’m totally fine with mgmt taking those kinds of risks. Not all of them are going to pan out. That doesn’t mean you should stop making those kinds of trades.

Exactly and I'm not sure why it's a hard concept to grasp for some. Don't forget the times here when the board wanted Newhook over Caufield because Newhook had a better WJC.

I would be happy at this point if Newhook could develop into a Byron. But at this point it doesn't look like he'll become Byron. Byron could change a game by taking off on breakaways and getting a key goal. And so far I like Byron better defensively.

BUT, hopefully Newhook can be find his ro lo e in the bottom six. Maybe he'll take over for Dvo at C next year. He was good with Armia and Gally/Roy last year. I would have liked to have seen that trio reunited while Heineman is out. Put Evan's between Laine and Dach.

What they probably thought was they were getting a middle 6F who stands to improve as he approaches his prime. He is after all on a bridge contract but we have him with Dach in a top 6 role. Flawed strategy

Let both Dach and Newhook finish their bridge. That's why they are on a bridge. To find out how good they are.

I think the Habs overpaid to acquire Newhook -- valuable-enough trade assets that could've been used to acquire another player. It was either a mistake, or simple incompetence, or nepotism. Take your pick.

Newhook has not at any point been worth the outlay. Thankfully his caphit is low and he's got wheels -- hopefully he can be converted to a PKer but he's not one yet, he's just a very very very bad 2nd liner right now.

Evaluation year. We knew it would be inconsistent. But it's weird how we've been inconsistent for weeks at a time.

Dvorak is gone. Gallagher is not. But it doesn't matter. Team is going to continue to transition.

I have zero issues with us selling this year but sell what? I mean most of the stuff we want to sell isn't going to garner much. Matheson will be a good piece but I can't see us doing that until next year. Dvorak has zero value. Armia has little value.

Do we want to trade Evans? I don't. But if he wants too much we may not have a choice. One thing I think we discovered is that Heineman was a pretty valuable player. He was pacing for 20 goals in his rookie season and since he left, Evans' scoring has dried up and the team stopped winning. He was giving us some really good depth scoring.
