Their roster was absolutely stacked. It’s not acceptable to handwave away Stamkos, Point, and Palat as “depth scoring” and Hedman, McDonagh, and Sergachev as “stingy D”.
The year they lost Kucherov these were their top-5 scoring forwards
Point 48 points in 56 games
Palat 46 points in 55 games
Gourde 36 points in 56 games
Stamkos 34 points in 38 games
Killorn 33 points in 56 games

They weren't exactly setting the world on fire offensively and those are the type of numbers that would fit in right alongside our teams. For reference that year our top scorer was Toffoli with 44 in 52.

So to put it shortly, you agree with me that he had no other choice
Uh, no.

He had three choices.

1. Rebuild and trade Price.
2. Try to win it now by signing Price and adding good players. (I’d have gone this route)
3. Sign Price and blow up the team anyway.

He chose three. And it made absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Wrong, he choose 2 but failed in adding good enough players

The team is also 3 game losing streak away from being back in the 1st over all discussion.

You’re misjudging how slow the Wild Card pack is moving. It’s like no one wants it. And the teams vying for it are no better than us. However the terrible teams in the Western Conference are much worse. The road to the bottom is much further. So we need to do a major tear down to get there.

Our major tear down would be no easier than the Sens who are no better than us. I would even say they’re worst as of today. Except they have many more good reasons to tank than us. Sens’ prospect cupboards are empty, their core is older and their stars want to skip town. We’re trending upward, they’re trending downwards. The only reason we’re still having this Tank talk is fan expectations. Montreal fans have none.

Yeah for Chicago to get the 5 wins needed to pass us it isn't just us going on a 5 game losing streak. It will take Chicago 14 games to get those points, so we have to go on a 14 game losing streak to drop below Chicago.

The point differentials often look small but it takes a lot of time to actually make up or lose ground unless playing against each other in those 4 point games.

You and I know better than to call Stamkos and Point “depth scoring”.

It’s like the folks who insisted Vegas won without PPG players when Eichel and Stone got 0.95 PPG. The fact is both TBL and VGK had stacked rosters with stud players.

I didn't call them depth scoring, I said that year the team's offence came from their scoring depth. They weren't carried offensively by their star players, those star players produced at 70 point paces, the offence came from having a large number of 40+ point pace forwards, and a D group that could also produce.

They had star players who underproduced (likely because the super duper star player was missing).

Their D wasn’t just stingy, it was stacked.

I don't believe we would have gotten much trading Price. Goalie don't bring a lot in trade vs forward/Defensemen.
Which then begs the question; why $10.5m/yr?

I suppose when you hire a public toenail clipper as your leader/coach you have to overpay your own players, sonce no other fa's would come, why would they?
