I find you are being generous. The only time we haven't sucked was in the Covid 2 playoffs.
The very poor play actually goes back to The foxhole year and a game we blew at home to the Washington Capitals.
Some would argue even before then as Price was the only thing holding us together for the most part.

FYI, fancy stats state the following: 1-2 respectively on the Habs for xGF% in November

Dach 58.04
Big improvement for Dach from Oct of 41.36 - stat incorporates puck possession numbers, time in offensive zone etc. His November numbers indicate he should be scoring more or that the team should be when he's on the ice. So it's a bit of head case and bad luck.
Furthermore, significant change in the team's numbers as a whole.
October: 38.60 xGF% – 29th
November: 51.92 xGF% – 12th
Habs didn't have one regular over 50% in October, 12 in November…
Stats suggest Habs started to turn things around a while back and w pending insertion of Laine + Roy should bear offensive fruits

Only guys worth keeping are NS, CC, Slaf, Guhle, Hutson, and Monty. The rest are garbage.
The rebuild needs a rebuild.
Start by hiring an NHL coaching staff and send this one back to pee wee.

ALL they need is to unload the dead weight - Dvroak, Armia, Andertson and bring in Demidov and possibly Beck and Davidson and Laine and they may look completely different.

Dach was our future #2C, he's playing like garbage.
Slaf was a unicorn, today he can barely do something on ice.

They need a lot more than that. This team is garbage other than maybe 4 or 5 guys.
MSL is in the running for worst Habs coach of all time. Makes Ducharme look like a tactical genius. First thing they need to do is hire a real coaching staff.
We’ll need a whole right side of the D for one thing. Savy is probably leaving and we’ll need a duo of top 4 right D no matter what. That’s just one thing.

It's not always a step back though sometimes it's just the kids struggling. I don't think the Avs took a step back in 2016-2017. They finished last in the NHL with 48 points in 2016-2017 and the following year they made the playoffs with pretty much the same lineup and coach.
