Columbus is coming back hard, it will be tough to beat them and the Sharks and Ducks in the tank race.

Hopefully the likes of McQueen, Frondell and Desnoyers prove to be really high caliber prospects as well if we finish outside the bottom 4.

Our Defensive squad has a total of 3 goals... If you exclude Mailloux (2 goals only). We seriously need a Shea Weber type of defensemen. We will need more goals from our D-man, if we want to leave the bottom 5 next year.

And if you look at only our current 6 regular defencemen, they all together have just 1 goal after 16 games!!!

I think you missed the most obvious outcome: one more major injury and we're almost guaranteed a top 5 pick.

That may be true, it doesn't however change my opinion to the post that I responding to, that being that Hughes currently would approve of this thread.

The panicking fans vs Hughes mindset are not in sync imo.

IMO this team will turn this around as the season progresses, and this would be Hughes' preference.

While the start to the season has been less than ideal, the sky is not falling.

You need ozone possession time to have D scoring. Only happens with Hutson and he hit multiple posts over the last few games.

The worry is that Suzuki and cc are just not 1st line players on a contender. The Habs are running out of time already in this rebuild.
The majority of the players drafted in the rebuild haven't even started to play for the club yet or have minimal GPs. How the hell are they running out of time? They still have vets to jetisin out and replace, another couple well stocked drafts....
Do people have an example of a quicker rebuild with the same challenges this management group had walking in? I'd love to hear about and will make a bet for charity it's a rarity.
Slaf, Hutson, Demidov, Fowler, Reinbacher, Mailloux, Beck, Kappenen, Hage and on n on. It takes a few years lol. They haven't even started making their mark yet. Some won't but geesh.....running outta time?

Top 9 seems to be a good mix of players. Obviously top 4 is gonna have the most value this year.

Certainly an opportunity to grab two great players.

I agree that we need Shea Weber, but for different reasons.

I need a D that can play D on the right side, plays the PK and roughs it up, ASAP. My health depends on it. The goals would be a bonus.

It's weird because last year our offense was living off the D production.
Last year, we had one of the worst Power Play. The opposing team know our defensemen won't shot. Only making a pass.

Our current roster of defensemen only have 2 goals after 16 GP.

I agreed with you. We need defensive Defensemen. Same could be said about our forward group. At the same, 3 goals coming from the D is pretty low....

Shea Weber has not the most offensive D. But, he had one of the most powerful shot in the NHL. Always dangerous in the P.P.

I'm all for adding another guy with size and skill, but I don't think it's a must with the top pick. It takes time for big skilled guys to really impose themselves at the NHL level, so even though we are too soft right now, Slaf will become more and more imposing, Dach has shown flashes, Beck, Xhekaj will surely bring that element as well. Hage and Demidov won't bring the sandpaper, but they have good enough size and don't seem particularly soft.

I don't know if Dach is a long-term solution with how he's going. Guess we'll see. Slaf is a big skill guy who's stopped paying attention and started getting run over again. Beck ain't that big and Xhekaj/Thorpe/Tuch will likely be 4th liners. We need more sandpaper in the system. Will I be devastated with Schaefer/Hagens/Misa? I suppose not, but I feel like we'll continue to have a huge toughness problem that we're going to need to address.

For Dach I think the question is more whether he can be a solution at center or whether it's on the wing. But I don't doubt he can be there as a top-6 guy. Slaf like I said it takes time for these types of guys to figure out the physicality of the NHL, him being a little soft right now is sort of meaningless.

I'm just saying, I'm pretty sure we were near the top of the league for production from the backend last season. Unless I dreamt it.
Habs were like 1st/2nd in D production last season, at least in the first half of the season. But they started last year with one of the best 5v5 in the league to go with it.

This year the 5v5 started way deep at the bottom of the league.
