We should go after Kruger for the 3C role next year but pre-expansion draft. Chicago could shed his salary and the return would probably be picks. See if we can snag John Hayden in the deal as well.

Huberdeau - Barkov - Marchessault
Smith - Trocheck - Bjugstad
Malgin - Kruger - Hayden
Jokinen - Mack - Sceviour

sign a fringe NHL/AHL enforcer for the 13th forward role.

Yandle - Petro/Pysyk
Matheson - Ekblad
FA/Kulikov :sarcasm: - Demers

Weegar

Lu
Reimer

Need to get rid of Bjugstad first to make room for a good 3C.

Our 1st + Bjugstad retained @ $3million + mid pick/prospect would get us a top line RW that has 2-3 years left on their contract. I'd probably do it for

Coyle + Stewart/Haula.
Simmonds
Carter

Doubt that would be enough for Carter or Simmonds but nearing value.

Kruger and Hayden could be had for lower picks in the 2nd to 4th round range.

Yeah. I think our 1st is likely in play, more this year than any other.

I like Simmonds but not that much.

Yeah I'd obviously do Yandle for Keith. Chicago on the other hand lol.

At least the 3rd and 4th lines won't kill us defensively and actually put up points.

How about a swap with the Oilers ? Bjugstad for Pouliot

Could be a bigger deal if you have interest in Eberle

Watching the Oilers more than most on this board ...

No for Pouliot. The current ceiling /floor level is not worth it in that deal alone. Pouliot takes worse stick infraction penalties than 45 year old Jagr does, and his turnover prone rate is wayyy too high for my liking. He's a bottom six guy who wants to play like top six forward, but can't get it done.

On Eberle front : wanted him on Panthers top line 3-4 seasons ago, but at that time Oil management would not admit that they needed to trade some of their "BIG4" forwards , let alone even one of them. It does seem like one of RNH/Eberle clock is ticking in Blue and Orange (maybe Eberle now due to Drai playing wing instead of centre). Even though I feel Eberle may need change of scenery , I do not believe a new team will elevate his game. He is who he is (like Kessel for example). I just don't see Eberle's perimeter play, soft back checking and one dimensional play being a fit for what Tallon wants (the regime prior in Florida -sure they'd want him if adv stats numbers lined up).

^And the chickens (Hawks) have come home to roost. Keith contracted to age 40, Seabrook till age 38, Kane/Toews till age 34..............all with untradeable over-valued/laughable term contracts IMO.

Perfect example of handing out ridiculous retirement golden parachutes to guys that will be on the downside of their careers very shortly (arguably Toews with his durability issues could be there + Seabrook/Keith are close). Again, GM's feel they have to hand out these contracts for their teams to remain relevant in the pursuit of the Cup at the expense of losing young promising players like Saad and Shaw + the inability because of the Cap to add quality to the defensive side. Chicago got lucky that Panarin wanted to sign with a Cup contender and he was instant synergy with Kane but the Preds kept them both on the perimeter where they are less effective. If Panarin is traded you will see both guys numbers drop considerably.

Time for a rebuild? All depends on whether Bowman can pull a chicken hawk out of his hat. :)

If Ekblad is ready for top line again then it's his but don't mind Petrovic/Pysyk on 1st if a decent coach is brought in. Roll all 3 defensive lines. I don't see us signing a big name free agent defenseman or trading for one. Any other ideas?

Unfortunately not. I'm hoping for Ekblad to get back on track.

I would take Keith. His contract ends when he turns 39 and his cap hit is only 5.5 ish with the actual dollars on a steep decline soon.

Gotta hope some of these teams that did well in the regular season are looking to make changes and need some cap relief to do so. If one of Bjugstad or Demers gets claimed by Vegas, that could really open us up to getting quality players at a discount in exchange for taking on some salary. With Montreal's center depth, maybe they over value Bjugstad.

Would you trade Aaron Ekblad and James Reimer for a signed Carey Price and a cap dump/larger contract?

A more realistic piece from Montreal is Patches who would look excellent on either Barkov or Trocheck's wing. Exactly the offensive weapon we need. Major issue is having the assets to get him. Maybe Bjugstad and our first? Can't see that being enough but Montreal needs a center.

Probably have to be someone like Trocheck to get the ball rolling.
Even then, MTL fans want a bigger(sized) center that could blossom into a 1st line center, so it'll be a tough sell to HF MTL.

Doubt Bjugstad fills the gap between Patches and the first round pick.
