Thread title is misleading. Those players are not exempt, they are required to be protected.

I think it's the league calling it the exempt list since they're exempt from being chosen but I agree that it's confusing

They are required to be protected unless they decide to waive it.

Some guys will waive, but only if they are very confident that they will not be selected.

Vets like bieksa and enstrom would want to see their teams protected and available list to see who is most likely to be taken by the knights. If one of those guys is taken, it would be cause the knights need to hit the cap floor and they want to trade them by the 2018 tdl. But, the knight would prefer to grab a 23-25 year old who hasn't translated their junior, NCAA, AHL numbers into the nhl.

I mean, does Horton care since he can't play anymore? Not like Vegas is going to burn $5 million per year on him.

The article references Clarkson, Clowe, and Horton being made exempt later on. This is just a preliminary list that doesn't account for buyouts, waived clauses, or injuries.

It's not clear, what's the rule? Why are these guys, like Price on the list, we know this won't be, does that mean that the Habs only have to protect two guys? How many can we protect? What?

It's going to be entertaining watching people lose their minds because they will undoubtedly respond before reading the article.

This list is the list of people who teams absolutely MUST protect.
8 Skaters 1G, or 7F 3D 1G

So for example, in the case of Chicago if nothing else changes... they're already committed towards 4F 3D 1G, and so have 3F, or 1D left to pick to protect.

As a Duck fan, put me down for the bolded only. I think Vegas takes the BPA within the guidelines of how many they must choose by position. Then they listen to offers from around the league and decide if some of those guys are worth moving or worth keeping and playing. Unless a team wants to overpay not to take one of their players, there's no reason Vegas will make deals like that unless a team possibly has two very good options to choose from.

So what happens if Pittsburgh gives Matt Murray a full NMC and doesn't move Fleury off the roster?

Could they do that?

If so, who gets protected?

Due to his age, the NMC wouldn't kick in until years after the expansion draft.
