But there were other teams in the bidding there as well. Toronto, the Rangers, Buffalo, and reportedly even Minnesota. Point is he let it be known to JR that Staal was available and then used that leverage to play the teams off eachother to drive the price up despite already having the destination in mind (us).

Kev's dead right when he says the #8 last year should have been enough... because for an impending UFA that would only sign one of two places (here or the Rangers) long term that's absolutely correct, #8 pick alone should have been enough.

Much the same way that the #7 and #50whatever should have been enough for Edmonton to move up. JR told them it wasn't, so they balked. If I'm JR I don't move this pick for anything less then the #8 and Myers from Buffalo, or #21, Gardiner (or Reilly) and another pick from Toronto. They might (and probably would) reject, but that's what I'd tell them the price is.

its a sellers market today bigtime! and JR is the seller--if the compensation is not exactly what we are looking for just walk away with Nichushkin!

I don't see him dropping to 4. Avs or Tampa will either be picking at 3 depending on if they make a trade. Avs would 100% take him at 3 and I don't see how Tampa wouldn't

Nope and I wouldn't expect anything until the draft gets underway.

Considering we don't really know what is going on from JR, that means he is doing it exactly how he should be. If he comes out and says exactly what we are looking for in trading #5, then he essentially just capped the most we'll get for it. Why would teams then give us more? By playing other teams against each other he is driving the value up, and we could get more than what we are hoping or expecting.

The only other option is to ask for an outrageous price like some GM's have done for some big stars. The problem with that is we are much more limited in time, and if he ends up trading it for less then he puts his future negotiating with other teams in jeopardy because they know he will go for less than his original asking price.

He still might screw things up, or not trade the pick at all, but this is how he should be doing it. I just hope he either holds out for a major overpayment or keeps the pick and gets BPA.
