Point is he let it be known to JR that Staal was available and then used that leverage to play the teams off eachother to drive the price up despite already having the destination in mind (us).
Kev's dead right when he says the #8 last year should have been enough... because for an impending UFA that would only sign one of two places (here or the Rangers) long term that's absolutely correct, #8 pick alone should have been enough.
Much the same way that the #7 and #50whatever should have been enough for Edmonton to move up. JR told them it wasn't, so they balked. If I'm JR I don't move this pick for anything less then the #8 and Myers from Buffalo, or #21, Gardiner (or Reilly) and another pick from Toronto. They might (and probably would) reject, but that's what I'd tell them the price is.
