Well, Hughes is hot now while Makar was hot earlier. If we think of this as a pendulum it might not go the way Vancouver fans are hoping...
Except Makar's swing was about half as long as Hughes' is (so far). Since November 22nd, when Makar was sitting at 25 points through his first 22 games, Hughes has scored at a rate of 0.84 points/game over a 39 game stretch - ranking 3rd among NHL defensemen behind only Carlson and Josi during that time. In the same time frame, Makar has put up points at a rate of 0.65 points per game, to sit 18th among defensemen, among the likes of Yandle and Ekblad.

It seems to me the 20-game stretch is more likely to be a hot streak than the 40-game one.

Hughes should be getting Norris votes, he's 4th in D-Man scoring and his underlying and 5v5 metrics are insane, absolutely insane, he's the best defenceman I've ever seen on the Canucks and its not particularly close, I always thought he'd put up points but its his defensive game that has impressed more than anything

Whatever happens, we can finally say we’ve found that elite franchise d-man that has been so elusive to this club it’s entire history.

I was so happy when he fell to us, it made up for being screwed in the lottery so much.

Well Hughes is on another level than Makar right now. How is it so egregious to say Makar was on another level at the time? He absolutely was lol and that's why people were freaking out. He was tearing the league a new one for months. Why get so butthurt about things people said a long time ago?

The discussion about these two players earlier in the season was/is absolutely embarrassing for both Avs and Canucks fans. Both sides have said (and continue to say) really stupid things in order to get a rise out of other people or make themselves feel better I suppose. You're just as petty for digging stuff up and linking it at this point in the season. Thankfully a majority of those posters on both sides have kind of bit the bullet and been more cordial, instead of just being petty.
No. It was one of the silliest comments I have seen on here and thats saying a lot.

When you say someone is on another tier you are not referring to them olaying on another level for a short period of time its implication is overall and for the long term.

People can think what they want, but I will tell avs fans this, despite wanting pettersson in that draft makar was right beside him for me and at the time I was very outspoken makar is better then heiskanen. Maybe i sold heiskanen short, but i still believe that. What i will tell avs fans, despite liking hughes more then even makar slightly in draft years, i classed byram as a very similar player to hughes. You have alot to be excited about, i wish my team kept building on prospects and picks instead of trading them. Your hughes type player is still coming.

i dont think its apt to compare any player to hughes. his style is too much his own.

You’re assigning people opinions that they may not have. Seems like a fools errand. Did you see someone say “Makar will be on another tier overall and long term”? I don’t think I ever saw that. Quote them so I can laugh at them. Otherwise this is just more bullshit from both sides

for example, I just said Hughes is on another tier. Just now, quoted in your response. Do you think I meant long term?

We will see, you wont find a bigger hughes fan then me if you check post history, but byrams skating and skill does remind of hughes.

Either way avs have alot to be excited about.

Incorrect. By definition the term tier implies long term. It does not imply that a player is better than another over a 20 game stretch for example.

No one uses the term tier to describe the short term performance.

They use the term for example describing McDavid vs Matthews. In which McDavid is considered a tier about, perennially a better player than say Matthews (or insert another player of your choice).

Hughes is wildly amazing but only a Nucks fan would even try to make the case that Makar doesnt deserve the Calder.

They both deserve the Calder. Canucks fans are trying to make the case that he deserves the Calder more. Ya know, cause that's what this thread is about.

As an objective 3rd party viewer with no horse in the race, good for them but they must have blinders on if they think Hughes will win. Lmao.

If you watch both of them play, there's a good case for Hughes winning over Makar if the season ended today. Most people who watch Hughes regularly understand this.

Hughes didnt even hit 20mins of icetime in a blowout win. Not even top 5 on the team in that game. Makar is regularly posting 25+ mins a game and was #2 in ice time on the Avs. That combined with being better statistically is more than enough to give it to Makar.

But take it from a non-involved fan who has seen 7-8 games this season from both the Avs and the Nucks - Makar beats Hughes in the eye test too.

Hughes is top tier, I expect several Norris noms from him over his career, its just that I expect several Norris wins from Makar over the same timeframe.

See thread and also see stats. Also you should give watching both Avs and Nucks games a shot - the difference is clear.

but the stats are literally favoring hughes; unless you're talking about ppg, where hughes is making huge progress (0.85 for makar vs 0.82 for hughes) all while makar gets 63% ozone starts and hughes at 57%
