I think it’s tightened significantly! I think it’s 50/50 at this point and trending towards Hughes for sure, but he has to keep doing what he’s doing.

I don't even care if Hughes wins the calder
Pettersson already dominated the calder voting last year, so it's not that big of a deal for a 2nd one.

he has exceeded expectations of what was expected from heading into the year. So I'm good.

Just FYI:

Hughes has played 10 more games, but only 7 of them were due to injury. Makar has only “lost” 7 games, and will be able to make up 3 of those 10.

If it’s a close race, that could be a factor. Doubt it’s close, though.

I still believe RNH got robbed that year.
I do as well but understand the logic. Landeskog was better defensively and contributed the same amount of points so he wins. There’s actually a lot of similarities, RNH/Makar both had the hot start and seemed like a lock at the time, both got injured mid way through the year allowing the door to open for Landeskog/Hughes, and both RNH/Makar had more of the “wow” factor while Hughes/Landeskog were more polished.

Exciting time for both the Avs and Nucks franchises. Stud dman and stud star forward

Don’t give up yet. Makar can still close the gap. And Hughes could slow down or get injured himself. Lots of hockey to go.

Dude you gonna jinx the Nucks. People have been saying that then guess what Makar got injured  Of course we're gonna hope that none of them gets injured though.

If Samsonov reaches 40 starts that makes things interesting.

I don't think Sammy will win unless he breaks a bunch of records but the kid has been dynamite. No way the Caps are in this position without him as Holtby has been mostly terrible for most of the year.

No denying Samsonov is killing it though. Amongst all goalies in the NHL w/ 20 starts or more, he is:
  • tied for 6th in save % at .925
  • 1st in GAA at 2.12
  • 3rd in QS% at .706
  • 5th in GA%
Among rookie NHL goaltenders he is 1st in GAA, save %, and wins. He struggled the first half in Hershey last year but dominated the second half of the year and that strong finish has seemingly propelled him to a strong showing this year in Washington.

I think main reason why RNH didn't win because he only played 3/4 of season. Missing that many games, not just the Calder, it will impact you on any nhl award. The only Calder winner that missed 15 plus games that I can remember was Bure. The award it is rookie of the year and not rookie of the year for 3/4. Kind of similiar to Jordan Binnington he didn't get many votes due to not playing a full season.

That being said Makar only missed 8 games. Don't think it will that much it any.

Its definitely closer and will be exciting watching watching these guys down the stretch here, looked like a runaway for Makar early in the season but Hughes is definitely making a strong case for himself with his play lately.

Another factor will be if the Canucks make the playoffs it will be a huge + for Hughes, they weren't really expected to be a playoff team and Hughes will have played a massive roll in them making it while Colorado's was expected to be a playoff team. Not really fair for Makar but it will be taken into consideration for sure

Anyone watching Hughes regularly knows the race has been closer than the narrative for a little while now.

Hughes closing the gap points wise hopefully opens the eyes of those who don't & are just watching Makar &/or looking at box scores.

Not to say Makar isn't still front runner. But Hughes has been damn good & getting better consistently.

Edit: Also in favour of merging this with the Calder thread.

Its just such a rare year with 2 Dmen that have been so outstanding.

This rookie class isn't short on depth though. Olfosson looked on his way to solidifying the top 3 but due to the injury the door has swung back open.

I think if Samsonov plays more games than Holtby (or atleast pretty close to the same amount) he could solidify the 3rd spot.

Others like Marino, Fox & Kubalik have had great rookie seasons aswell.

He's been so great. The thing is I think he would have to maintain those numbers but play at least 40 games. It's similar to Binnington last year although Samsonov is having a better season than Binnington's rookie year.

This.

It hurt my brain how much I read (from people who clearly hadn't watched Hughes) saying "Sorry Canuck's fans. Hughes is good, but Makar is on another tier". Pretty ignorant. He's right in his "tier".
