The Naps select LF Goose Goslin

goose-goslin-outfielder-for-the-washington-senators-takes-batting-a-picture-id156753544

1921-1938

.316 AVG
.387 OBP
.887 OPS (127 OPS+)
1,612 RBI
248 HR

Even had some speed with 5 top 10 SB finishes

Well above average defensive fielder

Interesting fact. His HR totals were even more impressive given that he spent a lot of time in Washington. For example, on the 1924 World Series winning Senators, his 12 HR were more than the rest of the team combined (10). That's right, a post-deadball era team hit 22 home runs all year and still won the World Series.

The Naps select SP Smoky Joe Wood as their fourth starter.

smokey-joe-wood.jpg

1908-1922

This guy is the very definition of a peak performer. His pitching career was effectively over in 1915 before he hit the age of 26, but was a good enough hitter and fielder to make a comeback where was pretty much a full time player between 1918-1922. But before he hurt his arm in 1913, he had one of the greatest seasons ever, rattling off 16 wins in a row, going 34-15 with a 1.91 ERA and 258 K's. And in his last (relatively) full year of pitching in 1915, he led the league with a 1.49 ERA.

117-57
2.03 ERA (146 ERA+)
1.087 WHIP

Pettitte established himself as one of the "Core Four" players who contributed to the Yankees' late-1990s dynasty that produced four championships. Pettitte won the 2001 American League Championship Series Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award in helping his team win the pennant.

-United States Senator from Kentucky (1999-2011)
-Ranking Member of Subcommittee on Securities, Insurance, and Investment
-Sponsor of Bunning-Bereuter-Blumenauer Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2004

During a 24-year career in Congress, the Southgate Republican built a similar reputation as one of the country’s staunchest and most uncompromising fiscal conservatives, and a bit of a wild card: No one knew when he’d throw a wild pitch or shake off his party’s leaders.

“He stood by his principles. Some might say to a fault – but he stood by his principles come hell or high water,†said Fort Mitchell attorney and author Rick Robinson, a former legislative aide to Bunning.

With the 184th overall pick in the twelfth round, the Albuquerque Dukes select OF Zack Wheat.

24436_a_0.jpg

"One of the grandest guys ever to wear a baseball uniform, one of the greatest batting teachers I have ever seen, one of the truest pals a man ever had and one of the kindliest men God ever created," Casey Stengel said of Wheat.

Growing up in Missouri, Wheat made his major league debut in 1909. He played 19 season in the major leagues, 18 of which came with Brooklyn, though he finished his career in 1927 with the Philadelphia Athletics, a team that featured five other eventual Hall of Famers.

At 5-foot-10 and 170 pounds, Wheat batted left-handed and threw right-handed. The outfielder hit over .300 14 times in his career, led the National League in batting in 1918, and finished with a .317 career batting average. He was also known for being a graceful outfielder with a strong arm.

Wheat's Brooklyn teams were mostly bad, but he did play in two World Series in 1916 and 1920, though his team lost both of them.

Wheat, who was nicknamed "Buck," spent the first part of his career in the dead-ball era and his best season during that timeframe was in 1914, when he hit .319 (batting average)/.377 (on-base percentage)/.452 (slugging percentage) with 26 doubles, 9 triples and 9 home runs. He finished ninth in the MVP voting that year.

Zack got to play with his younger brother, Mack, from 1915 to 1919.

Wheat was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veteran's Committee in 1959 and passed away in 1972.

"Zack Wheat was 165 pounds of scrap iron, rawhide, and guts." -Buck O’Neil

We are very pleased to add one of the most exciting ballplayers of the late 80s and early 90s. Though his career was cut short, he had a tremendous impact on the game. When he was forced to retire in 1995, he had the highest career batting average for a right-handed hitter since DiMaggio. Beloved, clutch and energetic, we are pleased to add Kirby's skillset to our team.

A colorful figure on and off the field who was a catcher that stole 50+ bases a year, hit above .300 and threw out 46% of baserunners? Sign me up for an 19th century star:

Kelly%20Mike%20Plaque%20176_NBL_0.png

-Hit .308 over a 16-year career with a .368 OBP
-Won two batting titles
-Stole 312 bases over a 5-year stretch from 1886-1890 when steals were first recorded
-Versatile enough to play any position including outfield, but for us he plays catcher

King Kelly was also a bit before his time in strategic thinking (per his HOF page):

When Kelly played with the White Stockings, he began to study the rules of baseball, and trying to figure out ways to get around them. A fellow HOF'er gave Kelly credit for originating the hit-and-run play that is so popular in the game now, and together the two came up with strategies for the sport that are currently considered commonplace. Some of the things they worked on were playing off first and third base, adjusting the outfield positions according to the player batting, the double steal and the infield shift.

The Los Angeles Angels with the 192nd pick are thrilled to select, Pitcher, Felix Hernandez, a 1 time Cy Young winner, with 6 top 10 finishes, he's 93rd all time in pitchers WAR and just turned 30 years old. Clearly on a HOF trajectory along with consistently great SO/9, WAR, and adjusted ERA numbers(3rd among active players in adjusted ERA and total strike outs, also 3rd in WAR)

With the 193rd pick the Los Angeles Angels select, RP Troy Percival

6 times he had a SO/9 north of 10
Career 1.1 WHIP
Career H/9 of 6.1
Career Adjusted ERA of 146

Fits the mold of what we want out of the BullPen, Power pitchers, I prefer a modern approach to building one, and simply put strike outs and preventing hits are the two most important things you need out of a reliever and he's great at both.

Mauer is an underrated offensive and defensive catcher. I'll let the accolades and number speak for themselves. Oh, and Paul Molitor...

Mauer attended the same high school as Baseball Hall of Famer and former Milwaukee Brewer Paul Molitor who is his current manager. Molitor has said that Mauer "has the best swing he had ever seen".

The Atlanta Braves will select C Yadier "Yadi" Molina!

With all the offence on our team, we felt we needed a very good defensive presence behind the plate. Yadi will work well with our pitching staff and also bring championship & veteran experience.

A winner of two World Series and four National League pennants, he is considered an essential figure in the Cardinals' postseason success, with nine appearances in his first twelve seasons. Considered one of the top defensive catchers of all time, his awards include seven consecutive selections to the All Star Game, eight consecutive Gold Gloves, four Platinum Gloves, and one Silver Slugger. Offensively, he has accrued more than 1,500 hits, 100 home runs, 600 runs batted in, and a .284 batting average.

As of 2016, he had thrown out 41.69% of runners attempting a stolen base over his career, which is currently 184th all time and led active MLB catchers with 55 pickoffs. Molina also formulates fielder positioning plans and complete pitching strategies to opposing hitters, earning a reputation as an on-field leader.

Initially considered a light hitter, Molina significantly improved his offense and raised his career batting average from .248 in 2007. Through 2015, he had a .286 career batting average in the postseason.

7× All-Star (2009–2015)
2× World Series champion (2006, 2011)
8× Gold Glove Award (2008–2015)
Silver Slugger Award (2013)

AL Rolaids Relief Man of the Year (1996)

John Wetteland was one of the most intimidating closers on the mound in the 90s. The first and only pitcher to record 4 saves in a single World Series, he helped give the Yankees their first Championship since 1978. In an injury shortened career, Wetteland was able to accumulate a remarkable 19.2 career WAR. We are glad to have this power pitcher anchor our bullpen.
