Official 2025 NHL DRAFT Thread

Realised while doing my Smaht preview for the WJC...

2001 was the record year for Germans being drafted with 7...

I guess this year wont beat it.

BUT there is an outside chance. Despite probably no German going top 50.

Lewandowski
Handel
Griva #1
Griva #2
Willhoft
Schneider
Fabio Kose
Timo Kose
Maxim Schafer
Rio Kaiser

all probably have a "chance" to be drafted. Albeit probably only 4-5 do. Weirdly deep age group the 2007 guys... albeit with no real stars.
Funny note, because my fiance is from Stutgard, i decided to make one of my fantasy teams all the Swiss, Germans and Austrians in the league.

So in our entry draft i have to draft all germans. Do we think Lewandowski and Handel are the only ones with genuine NHL upside?

Ahaha. Love this. I used to do crap like this on Football Manager... make a team with constricted nationality rules to make it more interesting. Had such a fun save where managed Partizan Belgrade with a rule that could only sign players of ex-Yugoslav nationality or descent.

I would say that in terms of those three nations for this draft:

Legit chance to be depth NHLers: Lewandowski, Handel
Have the talent but lot needs to go right: Willhoft
Longshots, but a small chance to be top 9/5 guys: Griva's, Elias Schneider, Fabio Kose
Longshots, if make it will be 4th liners/6-7: Timo Kose, Rio Kaiser, Maxim Schafer

Switzerland and Austria do have some prospects in this draft though, albeit quite a few are overagers:

Legit chance to be depth NHLers: Jamiro Reber, Elijah Neuenschwander, Ludvig Johnson
Have the talent but a lot needs to go right: Daniil Ustinkov, Matia Nico Birchler
Longshot, if things went perfectly a back-up goalie: Simon Wolf
Longshots, if make it will be 4th liners/6-7: Gus Van der Kaaij, Robin Antenen, Niklas Blessing, Kimo Gruber, Florian Schenk, Ian Scherzer, Phillip Sinn, Patrick Sollinger, Roman Kechter, Rayan Bettahar, Veit Oswald, Lenny Boos, Julius Sumpf, Edwin Tropmann, Noah Samanski

Now, basically outside the 11 guys in the first 2 categories everyone else are players in a real draft you would not spend more than a 7th round pick on! But they are the names I guess to look at.

Next year and 2027 will have some potential top talent coming though!

So my uneducated take on Caleb Desnoyers. I dont see 1C upside, I am not even sure I get the 2-way label maybe I didnt see enough, hes another high floor/low ceiling player. Good skater, good stickhandling, most of his goals are in tight, has a decent shot, great playmaker, tenacious, high iq, he's young. Not a lot of strength, not quick doesn't show the ability to separate, plays at times like the controller is disconnected, bad shot selection. Most of his flaws can be improved, but I dont see anything that at #4 or #5 where you would take him. I hope the Flyers interest in him at #4 is a smoke screen I would be disappointed if Hagens, Frondell or Martone were there and we passed.

The reports I've read on Desnoyers have his NHL projection 2/3C. Not one explicitly mentioned 1C. A few said "top six" which could theoretically mean 1C.

Does Hagens have 1C projection?

Perfect, you're my Austria, Swiss, Germany scout. Next year i'll need your info on the German speaking countriesYou're an official Bamberg Badger Hound (our dogs are Dachshunds, so it made the Germany thing even more necessary).

You throw in quality grip strength there or someone who "the little things right" and Flahr's dick hits his chin
It's a complex thing. Jett gets points for the ambidexterity of his grip, as well as his ability to say "how high" when Flahr asks him to jump, with arms and without! Jett also won the Wingate, which is why they took him over Buium, who only won the pull ups!

2024 NHL Combine results: Top 10 prospects in every drill

This will probably not be popular here, but I really hope the Flyers pick David Bedkowski with one of their number 2 picks. I also hope they take William Horcoff with a second as well. Bedkowski is a big tough mean SOB on defense who skates well enough, blocks a ton of shots (Flyers love this) owns the front of his own net, bangs and crashes and is excellent in puck retrieval. He plays a role every team needs and will be an NHL defenseman.
Horcoff is big and physical with good skills and would be a nice addition to the third or fourth line. The Flyers are pretty small and need to add some size for when they are in the playoffs in the future.
And yes, they need a lot more skill too.

Horcoff has Flyers written all over him. He's definitely gonna be on their shortlist with the COL and EDM picks.

6’4 center, NHL bloodlines, bad junior production, u18s, low upside, mediocre skating?

I’ll put some money on it.

Well, I’m less worried about playoff needs than you.

I feel like you just described Jack Berglund though. They did that last year. Add in Gill on the back end. Drafting for 4th line size with top 50-60 picks never ever ends well. High likelihood they never even reach the bigs. The Poehlings of the world are more likely to fail down to that role.
