I think the first part of your sentence is key, It's not surprising.

If they make a statement, they have taken a political position, as an organization (Team USA) that is directly hostile to its own government, and contrary to the belief of half their country.

The same is true if they made a statement on the opposite end - that they do support annexation. They alienate the other half of the country, but directly align with their government.

Either way, I don't think it was ever in the realm of possibility that Team USA would make a statement. Silence was their only legitimate option in the current political and media climate.

Certainly cowardly. But I would expect no different in this bizarro timeline we're in.

One of these things is not like the others.

If the American team, as guests in the country of Canada, had come out before the tournament and rejected the illegal takeover threats made by their country’s deranged dictator, then maybe their precious anthem would have got cheers instead of boos. Silence is complicity.

The simple, scary fact is that probably 80% of the US players are 1%ers who voted for Trump in the hopes a tax cut, so it's way past complicity. If you're not against the dictator, you're with him.
