Detroit Red Wings are proud to select LW Vasili Podkolzin

New GM Steve Yzerman says: "He's a powerful winger with a great work ethic. He has a lot of skill and plays with a will to compete at everything he does. He fits in well with our prospect pool as a complement to our other strong, skilled net front players like Rasmussen and Zadina. The Red Wings have an organizational history of great Russian players and we can see him playing top line minutes with us in the near future. He's close to NHL ready but we're not going to rush him."

 I actually thought you might take Kalieyev.

Dach .... after all that whining about him in the draft thread.
Well, Id be lying if I said hes not a good player no? But hes not without flaws.

To me, Dach isnt a next level prospect as some think, hes in a group of 5,6 maybe 7 other prospects that have strengths and weaknesses. Its so close that you can go by need IMO.

Now that Byram is taken, I have to say, I debated long and hard between him and Turcotte. I do like Byram a lot and would probably be my pick for Montreal at this pick, but Chicago has used their first 2 picks on d-men the last 2 years (Jokiharju, Mitchell, Boqvist, Beaudin) and I see Turcotte as a perfect fit there.

The Anaheim Ducks are thrilled to select, from the USNDP, winger Matthew Boldy.

"Boldy is a player who we feel is one of the very best in the draft and the best left winger available. The first thing you'll notice about him is how good he is already. The second thing you'll notice is how much room he still has left to grow. We don't often get to draft a player who brings a full package of skills in a 6'3" body who already plays a pro game, but that's what Boldy is. He's smooth. He's a high end passer. He thinks the game at a high level. He can score in every way you can think of and once in a while, he'll score a highlight reel goal. He'll be a great fit on our club."

Edited my GM speech to reflect that. Yzerman's first draft with the Wings is going to be epic and starting with a Russian powerhouse is a great way to start it!

But then I also took Nichushkin 5th overall for Calgary in 2013 so...there's always that.
