DeAngelo is horrible defensively, but sometimes teams will overlook that in favor of high end skill. There's no denying he's probably the most offensively gifted defender in the draft. I don't think Honka will be around when we pick, but he'd be a great selection.

The more I hear about Kempe, the more I like him. Him having some size is a plus as well.
Don't know if it matters or not but Sonny Milano is huge Islanders fan. I know that after the prospects are drafted they should become pros and loyal to the team that drafts them, but maybe his heart wouldn't be in it if he was drafted by the Rangers. Sort of like JVR and the Flyers.
Now his skating could help him reach the big time, like the Islanders he idolized growing up: Tim Connolly, Zigmund Palffy, Jason Blake.

All things equal, he is a top offensive talent.
Seems to me that most people here have skipped over Jake Virtanen. I think he'll definitely go before we pick, hopefully he drops, but he would be an ideal draft pick. Big, strong, fast, nasty with a great shot. A power forward that we lack in our system.

I'm not worried about his favorite team growing up, if anything it would inspire him to ply hard against them.
Maybe it affects who they later sign with as unrestricted free agents, like we may see with Callahan, but not until then.
Milano is that speedy wheeling and dealing type player that is big right now. Lot of guys I like out of the US right now, especially Greenway and Eichel.

I'd say we'd be picking around the 17 mark. IMO I wouldn't go for a defenseman unless it were Honka or Fleury. I'd much rather Honka, but I think someone will pick him prier to 17, as well as Fleury. Realistic picks I would say could be Tuch, Milano, Larkin, Pastrnak, and Kempe. I would hope for Ritchie, McCann, or Honka to be around when we select, but I highly doubt it (unless we can get 2 1sts & make up for last year). Also some players that I can see sneaking into the 1st somehow are Fiala, Ho-Sang, and Scherbak. I wouldn't touch Schmaltz though. His play screams Brian Boyle 2.0.

The bigger red flag isn't being an Islander fan, but idolizing Tim Connolly.
its been known that Rangers need to upgrade their size... now having said that, are their any David Backes type forwards in this draft?? Rangers need that type of forward in their organization.. someone with that gritty style and that will make the other team honest.. always been a fan of power forwards with skill.....

Alex Tuch, 6'4" 220 lbs, USANTDP. I know he's been mentioned by me and many other posters, but since he is from the Syracuse, NY area, I'd like to hear a scouting report from offdacrossbar (ODC), since he is local.
sounds like a player that would be a fan favorite.. i hope Rangers target these type at the draft this year... Rangers have enough small skilled forwards and 4th liners. they need some one like simmonds, hartnell, backes, benn. skilled and a mean streak... someone who can agitate at times..

Backes didn't have it like he has now at Kreider's age either. Kreider continues to use his size more and more, give it some more time, he's still growing.

It'll be interesting to see if the drafting philosophy changes in early rounds with a new system in place at this level. Chances are that it won't, but will the Rangers take a flier on a guy like Goldobin or Scherbak to try and inject more high-end skill into the lineup?
The US group looks pretty solid this year. I think the Rangers will ultimately dip back into the US prospect pool. Tuch, Larkin, Schmaltz, Milano, Dougherty, Glover, MacInnis, etc, all look like B+ level prospects in this draft. Could go with 3 Americans in round 1, 2 and 3 and still end up with a very good haul.
Dougherty is a wild card for me. He has a great set of raw tools and he's heading to what is, in my opinion, the best school in the country for producing NHL quality defenders, the University of Wisconsin.

I would love for this team to draft and develop big forward who can punish other teams, however, I don't think the fans have the patience to allow these types of players develop. The larger the player, the more likely they are to take longer to develop as they need time to grow into their bodies and develop strength. McIlrath is a good example. Kreider was another one. People have no patience.
Tuch would be a great add, but if you're expecting him to be a fan favorite because of his mean streak, then you'd be pretty let down. He's a great skater who can really use his size effectively in all areas of the ice, but there's really no nastiness there.

How's his defensive game? This team could use a Martin Hanzal like center in the worst way. That's not to say we should draft on need, but his skill set sound intriguing. Tuch is a BC prospect. Even if he became a more offensive Brian Boyle like player in the NHL (BC alum), the pick is a huge success.
I'm also interested to see if the Rangers will take a little more risks with their early picks. A guy like Tuch or Larkin would be the Gordie Clark pick. It would be interesting to see if they gamble on a guy like Honka or Pastrnak if they're still on the board.
His 200ft game is decent, but he's not a center. He might be listed as one, but he's spent most of his time on the RW.
Larkin reminds me a lot of JT Miller. I think they project as similar players.
I think Schultz could be the most dynamic of all US skaters this year. His defensive game is non-existent, but his hands are ridiculously quick and he's a fantastic puck distributor. If he can figure out the defensive side of things, he has top-six scoring center upside. The way he moves on the ice reminds me a bit of Ryan Strome, though I'm not sure he has that kind of upside.

Yeah I think that's pretty reasonable. Wheeler has really underrated playing ability but doesn't take advantage of his size enough. Tuch will be a complimentary player on his line who forechecks hard, works the boards and provides a really good net-front presence. His shot is good, but his release isn't quick enough.
