Official 2012 Entry Draft Thread

Gianluca Curcuruto will be a 1st rounder IMO, kid has a great stride, good offensive upside, and the best part of his game is his defense. He is hard to get around, and lays the body at the right time. I believe he was ranked as a top 10 pick by THN? Also where does Soo Greyhounds goalie Matt Murray rank? Has been very impressive in the 2nd half, and is a big goalie. Would imagine he could be a 3-4th rounder?

What do you guys think of Nick Ebert? Where is he projected to go (I know it's early)?

I like what I have seen of him so far. He may be limited a tad based on size although he is by no means small. Many teams also shy away a bit from Dmen as they generally take longer to develop.

I have him pegged as a top 10 easily, probably top 5.

Top 5 goalie for the draft imo.

Some great talent not from just North America, but around the world.

Dansk, Windsor, Subban, Murray and Dreidger are guys to keep an eye on.

Don't forget Brandon Hope. I heard tons of great things about him and that he might be a 1st/2nd rounder.

Yakupov seem to make the 100 point club this season, if he continues on this pace. 97 points (4 assists so far tonight), with two games left.

where would you rank Eric Locke as of now?

also, do you think Brian Cooper can challenge for top d-man in 2012?

Totally forgot about him there for a second.

Eric Locke is about early 2nd rounder / low 1st rounder as of now, I think he can move up though.

Cooper has the potential to be a top defenseman in the draft, but with such depth in the draft, he could be around 4th-7th best defenseman in the draft, but he will still turn out to be a good offensive defenseman.

EDIT:
If anyone has a list of some of the best USA High School Prospects, please send me a list through message.

I've never seen Cooper play, but right off the first concern is size.

Now size is not everything, but if we are looking at the draft, teams tend to stay big. For example the first Dman taken in 2010 that was under 6'2 was the 7th dman taken, last of the first round. Average size of Dmen in the first 6 picks was 6'3, average weight just over 200 pounds. 2009 saw 13 dmen drafted first round (must be near a record), only one under 6 feet tall (Ryan Ellis). 2008? 12 D men taken, only one under 6 foot was Karrlsson.

What that means is if you are not 6 feet or more, and want to be a first round pick as a Dman, you better be more than exceptional at the level you are playing at.

Now Cooper is a late Bday so he has a bit more room to grow, but 5'9 175 (got that size off hte blog posted here, is it correct?) really means he has to shine well above the other players to get a nod as the top dman.

Even Ebert whom I consider only a tad small, is probably heading to the draft at 6'1, maybe 6'2 and 200 pounds.

Cooper isn't going to be near the best d-man in the draft. He'd have to have a epic year next year for that to happen. He's going to challenge Murray, Ebert, Dumba, Pouliot, Reinhart, Koekkoek, Reilly, Matheson, Severson etc.? That seems extremely far-fetched IMO. Could he crack the 1st round? Absolutely a possibility. But as far as cracking the upper echelon, no.

Very interesting analysis and I'll agree with you on the premise that I have no clue who Cooper is.

However, if you take a look at all the defensemen drafted before the #43th pick in the 2007 draft. I'd pick that 5'10 stud defensemen over 98% of the dmen drafted before.

I got a buddy, Cameron Yang, who's a goalie. He's undersized, but from what I've heard, he's pretty darn good. Apparently he's going to walk-in at Yale when he goes there (he's got the brains to get in). I was wondering if anyone had heard of him

You can always take a look back and find those few who make it through. It does happen. Hindsight being much more accurate than foresight.

Remember though the question is could Cooper challenge for the top dman spot? Bringing out the #43 pick as an example sorta makes my point. Short small dmen, regardless of how skilled, are generally ranked and drafted lower than big dmen.

Cooper may very well end up being a draft steal, but only a steal because he is not likely to be one of the top picks.

That's a pretty solid list even though it's tough to leave out guys like Matheson, Girgensons, Rielly, Campagna, Ciampini, Maataa, Gow, Hodges, Leduc, Hertl, and others.

But, this is a very tough year for these kids. If any of their stock slip even slightly, they will fall like a brick.

Finnish D-Man, projected to go in the 1st round, Olli Määttä just won the championship of SM-Liiga Jr. A. He played against older competition, but he was still a key player in that team.
