They still are, they had yet another weekend beg-a-thon.
In 1972 WGBH took a gamble and acquired the Boston rights to the Canada/USSR games in Moscow and between periods banged the drum for money. They broke every fundraising record in station history.
The game was also on local radio but also on delay because of a Red Sox game.
I wanted to make sure I did NOT know the score so I cut myself off from the outside world but figured it was safe to watch Walter Cronkite. The CBS Evening News led with crowd shots of thousands of people on Younge St waving flags.
The series in Russia was the first time I ever saw ads on the boards and it turned out an ad agency in Sweden fleeced the Russians good.

CPTV (CT public television) hit the mother lode when it got the rights to UConn Women's basketball in 1994. They made a ton of money until they were outbid by SNY in 2014.
Channel 38 was the best place I ever worked and I was shattered when the owner sold the station to help fund his purchase of a hockey team in Poutinville.

I love walmart. I hit the one in leominster at least once a week. Plus they carry those Red's Burritos that I pound down like a savage

That series was legendary and remains so in Canada to this day. Watched the games from Russia in the school classroom like virtually all schools had arranged right across the country. It has been well documented in so many ways including a television series recreating the Canadian story lines with emphasis on key figures like Espo, Clark, the notorious Eagleson and of course Canadian hero Henderson. You would be hard pressed to find a citizen from that era who doesn't vividly remember the call of Foster Hewitt on the series deciding goal in game 8 on Russian ice. In was such an impactful moment in Canadian history and not merely for hockey fans. Was such a shame that Orr was unable to participate as his well documented knee problems developed.
Such a profound event on the psyche surrounding the western world and the Soviet Union on hockey and geopolitical fronts. It contributed greatly to opening up the NHL to becoming a destination for great international stars.

We do the same. I hate Walmart, but it's the only market in my town, so we go there constantly. In terms of staples like condiments and canned goods, it's easily the most cost effective. The meats and fruits are terrible there though. They don't last more than a day before going bad, so we buy those at Market Basket, which is a town over from us. The worst part about going to Wally world is that my wife also folds in shopping for non food stuff, which takes forever. And the checkout lines blow, to the point where that takes longer than actually shopping. It really sucks, but that's what I get for living in the sticks.
Either way, the prices of both places are far better than Shaws or Stop and Shop, and it's by a lot.

They get word now that there may be a chance of snow, and they call off school fopr 3 days. When I was a kid, they were like, eh, it's only a foot and a half, so get in here.

I get that just because something has been done a certain way, it doesn't mean it needs to continue -- of course safety should be the #1 priority. But holy ****, give me a break.
I grocery shop at WalMart. On average it costs me 10-15 a week less than going to Big Y. That's over 100 bucks a year in my pocket. Like you I won't buy meat there not only because it's terrible but the packages are just too big for a single person. I don't need to buy 5 pounds of hamburger at a time thank you very much.
I hear you. The busses ran in weather that would get the drivers fired for doing it these days. Plus we had outdoor recess unless it was raining. I remember one winter the entire playground was covered in about 2 inches of ice. We played out there anyway and IIRC one kid split his head open when he fell. No big deal they got him to the nurse's office, did a quick check on him and then called his mom who took him to the doctor to get it stitched up. Nobody sued the school, it was just part of life.
