OT: 'Off topic' thoughts

Some people are getting super rich of Lithium, Solar, Windmill and Green credits. Explain how the green tax that is transferable in credits between companies and end users pay for regardless addresses the environment? Since the carbon scam, what's changed? It's getting worse since they started this thing not better.

There is a lot of fear mongering out there and a lot of "solutions" are based on convincing kids to have lower expectations rather than higher expectations. If they are smart they will discern truth from BS and champion logical paths to achieving a good healthy and balanced life that works for both themselves and nature.

A lot of the solutions being used now are actually more dangerous long term. I think we are all on the same page but the youth doesn't get the flip side of the "best practices" being touted. This world is so polarised for no reason, we need to practice KISS (Keep it simple stupid).
I would add that the vast majority of products being sold as "green" aren't so "green" at all, greenwashing is a big thing. KISS and using good old common sense are always highly recommended!

There's a lot of fear mongering out there, but there are also legit reasons to be afraid, much more so than 50 years ago.
Things like revisit clean coal. Work on hydrogen engines, Get the lithium out of batteries and find a safer alternative then EVs will not have a toxic end. Maybe safer nuclear technology has a place because I mean, even the Dutch have said windmills is not a solution as many of them get broken in high winds and are too expensive to fix. Solar has a lot of toxic elements in it and they keep getting smashed by hail etc.

At the end of the day. I am going to go the middle ground and not for accepting a tiny home while embracing toxic solutions that are mostly proven not to be viable.

Just wanted add. During the Palisades fires, can you imagine how much lithium from all the Tesla's is now in the air.. Sheesh.
Agree with all this, I would only add that nuclear is a lot safer then people think.

If only it was as easy as that. I mean I hope you're right, but I'm not so sure. I also think there's a decent chance that the orange man imposes martial law before the end of the month claiming a national emergency. If that were to happen, would that just be more silliness to shrug off?
I think there will end up being a level of dissent within the Republican party that will result in all of this being scaled way back. If the Republican base thinks they are at risk of losing mid-term elections in November 2026, it won't matter what Trump wants to do.

Yep there's definitely not alot of entertainment or things to do in a place like Stouffville and that's a big drawback.

Newmarket twenty - thirty years ago was something like 50k, now I think it's approaching 100k.

When I was a kid, I dont think you could have convinced me to want to live in places like Keswick, Uxbridge, Port Perry etc but as I've gotten older, those are some pretty cool places if you're looking for slower pace and more outdoors type living.
Not sure how the high school sports are up that way but I love them down here. What about junior hockey and amateur baseball?

Up here in Dufferin County we’re surrounded by Chinese own windmills, they get green credits which are supposed to offset the pollution they create, not going to make a dent when they build s coal plant ir two a week…….

The junior hockey is still competitive, not really sure about the baseball setup.

I guess that's another drawback if you have kids and want them to play against the best competition, would have to drive far or move closer to the city.

As it stands Trumps approval rating is sky high, maybe Americans actually want a end to the waste and fraud the Swamp has been a part of for decades. That and a return to old fashion values might just same the country…….

I hope you're right, but unfortunately I think what the orange man wants to do actually means quite a bit, and one thing he never does is admit he's wrong about anything.

Still curious as to how you'd feel about him imposing martial law before the end of the month.

That fire and the Hawaii one were more than fishy, seems wherever they want a fifteen minute city a catastrophic fire breaks out. Another environmental thing no one has mentioned is cloud seeding and chemtrails or Gate releasing genetically modified mosquitoes, humans playing Gid never ends well imo……

We had a condo in Oldsmar/Dunedin and the older I got the less I wanted to retire there. I’m currently sitting in my outdoor kitchen watching and listening to the birds and squirrels at the feeders and can’t see another house.
So, your living the dream, good on ya brother……

I completely agree that trump will never admit to a mistake. He'll spin where he needs to spin. He says a lot of silly stuff for the sake of hyperbole, but his actions are usually pretty tame. That was the case in his first term. He wants to lower interest rates, and this is the approach he has chosen. He will ultimately get it because the US fed will start cutting rates as the labour market weakens. Once unemployment in the US starts to tick up at a higher pace, I think we will see a lot of these "policies" scaled back. Again, it's all about the 2026 midterms. If there is risk of losing ground to the Democrats, his support within the party will start to erode. You can already see it starting.

To bring it back to Canada, I think we are in far worse shape, and I expect that we are at the front end now of what will become a very painful recession. Someone else here mentioned that people should not become attached to the projected salary cap numbers. I think that is correct. I think for many Leafs fans the NHL salary cap will be the least of their concerns. Good thing the Leafs will get that Cup this season

I’ve warned about counting chickens before they’ve hatched several times here and the cast majority are more than comfortable spending on the assumption that the cap can only go up. Nit a fiscally responsible way to manage a team imo…….

IMHO there's reason to fear that this term could be much worse. Your thoughts if he declares martial law a couple of weeks from now?

Canada needs a change of direction and a leader with a intelligent/coherent vision for what needs to be done, unfortunately I don't see that there's any hope of getting that in this election. Luckily Canada is still quite rich so there's still time to get it right. As far as the salary cap, that might have been me - I know I have brought this up that the orange man could be the new covid that impacts the cap.

As far as the cup goes, not very likely but stranger things have happened for sure.

I'm not sure I understand the basis on which Trump would declare martial law. Why would he do that? His support is still quite strong. I suppose if he did try that. he would run into a lot of legal roadblocks. My suggestion is that we want to see what happens on or before April 9. I don't think it was an accident that Trump set a forward date for the effectiveness of these tariffs. Lots of time to make changes.

To bring it back to the Leafs, can you explain why winning the Cup this season is "not very likely"? Honestly, why is it so crazy that a team that is 5th overall in the league could win? Where are the holes in the lineup? Is this pessimism still just "well, you know, these 4 guys...."?

He would do it for nefarious reasons but back to my original question - your thoughts if this were to happen. Just more silliness to be shrugged off?

BTW if it happens, it'll happen on or before April 20th and there are no legal roadblocks that I'm aware of.

Any team that makes the playoffs has a chance, it's a question of how likely it is. The Leafs are currently listed as 10th among the favorites, even if you want to argue that the oddsmakers have it wrong, they're usually not wrong by much so ... they're a pretty good team, but there are many teams out there that are just as good, or better so you do the math.

I don't think there will be any martial law. What there will be, however, is another blood red day on the market tomorrow. Strap in. It will be ugly.

I asked maybe 4-5 times your thoughts if this were to happen, you keep not answering. Obviously you don't want to answer which is a bit weird but whatever, I won't ask again.

I don't there is going to be martial law. If there was, I think it would work out incredibly badly for Trump. The Republican party would turn on him instantaneously. US citizens? Jesus, I can't even imagine how visceral their reaction, and defiance, would be.

You only need 1 Fukushima or Chernobyl every 25 years to make it worrisome enough. How much safer is hydro electric or geothermal generated power?

Yeah this isn’t true, but what you and your family do is your perogative and obviously only you can assess if it’s right for you.
If you can’t earn your way in through merit, several countries will let you buy your way in.

I had a nephew couldn’t get into med school. There was a place in the US that would take him for 250 grand but that was 20 years ago.

Hello gentlemen! I'm going to go off-topic in the off topic thread - Friday night I went to see Loverboy and Quiet Riot at Woodbine Casino. I think tickets were originally $46 but I was able to snag a couple for $30 each off stubhub. Loverboy was great, played all their hits, and sounded really good.
Quiet Riot however, were excellent! There is only one original member (legendary Rudy Sarzo) but they still rocked hard and loud. I was very pleasantly surprised at how well they sounded. I remember buying their first two major releases on cassette - the first one from Columbia House (my Mom was one of the only honest people to actually pay and honour the contract) and the second one I bought on a family trip to Florida - we stopped in New York to visit relatives, and I bought Condition Critical at some record store in Times Square.
Both bands brought back great memories, even though both have been in constant rotation in my 70s and 80s music library.
Rock n Roll. :yo::yo:
