OT: 'Off topic' thoughts

In my opinion, this team as it stands today is dividing the fanbase more than the 2005-2009 era teams that were infinitely worse. Everyone's frustrated, regardless of where we stand on our opinions of the core, management, etc...but I get the impression there are quite a few people on this forum that would rather be right and have the team fail than be wrong and have the team succeed. My opinions on this core, this management group and the organization as a whole are well known, but the Toronto Maple Leafs are infinitely more important than my ego and I'd love nothing more than for Mitch Marner to shove a Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe in my face. He could bludgeon me half-to-death with that trophy for all I care. Give him all the money if that happens, I don't care. I'm not a good fan, I don't watch enough games and there were periods of several years where I tried to pretend I didn't care that much or pay much attention anymore...but I was lying to myself. You can't get mad about something you don't care about, after all.

I was a mod on this very board around that 2005-2008 period and it was definitely a bit Wild West-y, but I didn't feel that *most* people's agendas (I say most because I'm going to get myself in trouble if I elaborate more) permeated quite so deeply, and we banded together more against the flood of trolls that attempted to give us a virtual STD with their posting. The forum wasn't yet flooded with the worst advertising experience of any site I've ever seen and the mods couldn't hide behind Troll Stomper or whatever it's called. One of the biggest problems then on this site were the overly anal moderation (of which I myself was guilty) that ramped up around 2007 or so with the objective to exile (either willingly like myself, or unwillingly) a large group of posters across fanbases to HFBroads. Transplanted Caper was one of those posters, for example, and I will stand by my opinion that he was the best damn poster on this forum. By the time some of those policies were rescinded it was too late. The Habs board lost a bunch of really good posters that will never come back (and/or have grown out of this sort of thing.) Sens board too. I don't think I'm going full OLD MAN YELLS AT CLOUD mode here when I say I looked forward to posting here more back then than now.

I guess to summarize: Every other fanbase hates us. We shouldn't go out of our way to hate each other. When any of us are wrong, it's okay to admit that (unless you're a politician, apparently.)

Brave browser and/or adblockers, my friend.
Sometimes, people just grow up, get too busy with life, or pass on to the great big ice rink in the sky.

It's all good - nothing ever dies, it only changes form.

It's f***ing freezing in my place.

I can see my breath. My neighbours both sides to the right and left all have power. Across the street all has power.

I'm on the corner of a sideroad and me and all the houses behind my building don't have power yet.

It's like they got to my place yesterday and called it a day. Good job boys. Go home to your nice warm houses and beds.

Leave the poor bastards in the slums to freeze some more.

I'm wearing three pairs of socks, two pairs of pants, a tee shirt, a long sleeve shirt, a sweater, a jacket, a toque, and laying under two blankets. But hey I just got my internet back today a couple hours ago. At least I can temporarily bitch about something other than the Leafs who I didn't even get to see play the last game.

The wheel wasn't the greatest invention of all time... electricity was.

I feel your pain, we’ve been without power since Saturday but we have a generator. Get yourself a Gernerac hook up for your hydro meter snd get yourself a generator, that set up runs our entire house. Make sure you keep gas onhsnd, up here in Dufferin County plenty of gas stations are out of premium gas which us the only gas you should use in small engines as a good maintenance practice. In our hamlet the community center is open gor those without a generator to warm up, charge their devices, and get a free meal, I’m surprised none of your neighbours haven’t offered help. In the country many hands mske light work, here’s hoping your back up snd running sooner than later…….

Well said, I too find myself walking on eggshells whenever I’m composing a post, I always have to consider who my take offence to my words, the world wasn’t always so sensitive so for us old farts it’s a process to figure out what one can and cannot say least they overstep a imaginary line and then face the wrath of the duly appointed who police such things. Maybe I’m too old to be here, I just don’t know anymore………

…… or you can just come in and say what you mean to say.

If it’s coming from a good place and love of the Leafs, the majority will get it. Some will agree, some won’t, but it’s an opinion made out of love.

Better for all to hear it, and for those who don’t like it, they can take a flying kcfu at a rolling donut.

Don’t let the not so silent minority stifle your voice and take a good poster out of the forum. We need more, not less.

If you spend your life watching everything you say, you won’t get anything said.

Cheers

There’s not an insignificant number of times I write a reply here just to opt not to submit it or delete it right after positing because the response isn’t going to be worth it.

The internet generally speaking is much more toxic place than it was 10 years ago.

Toxic and sensitive, I miss the old days when people had thicker skins and the need to have your words censored wasn’t a thing……

Exactly and eventually we all come back. Finite amount of matter, time is infinite. Shuffle the molecules enough times they all come back in the same order.

Blasphemy!

You aren't excited about the tiny homes and row housing with no garage or driveway? you could hook up to VR rock out for days waiting for your next carbon allowance to come in so you can take a trip to the shop 12mins away. It's going to be so green and great and I am excited! Aren't you?!

is there a place for my generator in one of these tiny homes, because that's what's been providing my electricity for the last 6 days and counting?

Well no, but you will be happy to know they are very green and regulated so that people can not tinker with things like electrical systems. Soldered and state inspected regularly and as an added benefit to you, you don't have to bother with silly troubles like ownership. Ownership is a dying 20th century concept. We need to make the world great again and the man that shall not be named is just the man for the job.

And if they aren't, no worries, they will be painted green ASAP.

Hey my power’s back on and internet is up and running. FYI anyone who’s in a position of having data issues on your phone try enabling your personal hotspot, data on my phone wouldn’t work any other way, crazy stuff……

People that are easily offended are often not worth your time. I don't care how that statement comes off because I have to be professional at work and I dont have to do it here so I don't try. Whether people agree with me or not is beside the point, but you usually know where I stand on things on HF because I'm about as subtle as a sudden attack of diarrhea. I'm probably not any more pleasant either?

Political correctness is pretty boring and people that get pretend offended to get social justice internet points without actually for-real contributing to the causes they claim to support are total phony trash, don't pay attention to them or care what they have to say.

I swear to God everything after GenX is crap and I'm a millennial.

What really scares me is Dominion voting machine………
I'm currently working at an ED for the Federal Election and I can tell you that they only use paper balloting. In some ways it's great because it makes it very difficult, if not impossible to rig the election (especially with all of the scrutineers on site making sure there isn't any funny business). In other ways, not so much, seeing as it takes hours to count every ballot and those polling days can be 15 - 18 hours long.

However, I also worked the last Ontario election and they used a great deal of tech to handle voting including Dominion tabulators. When I first learned about the Dominion tabulators, I had visions of 2020 going through my head but I was stunned at how locked down they were; only one operator per tabulator. Period. No exceptions.

Those tabulators coupled with centralized reporting is what also allowed for snappy vote counts. When people ask how are they able to determine a winner in 15 minutes it's because each Electoral District has a team taking calls from each poll with a mandated SLA to have at least 50% of their polls reported in the first 15 minutes. The tech polls are able to do this rather quickly as the votes are already registered through the tabulator. Within an hour every poll had reported in with their totals - tech and non-tech alike (non-tech would be your LTC and home visits).

I hear you but I think these boards are a lot more forgiving than - say - something like Reddit; an absolute cesspool of reprobates and jirclecerkers. I won't even post the time in there because some lunatic might write a thesis on its roots in the evil patriarchy.
