In my opinion, this team as it stands today is dividing the fanbase more than the 2005-2009 era teams that were infinitely worse. Everyone's frustrated, regardless of where we stand on our opinions of the core, management, etc...but I get the impression there are quite a few people on this forum that would rather be right and have the team fail than be wrong and have the team succeed. My opinions on this core, this management group and the organization as a whole are well known, but the Toronto Maple Leafs are infinitely more important than my ego and I'd love nothing more than for Mitch Marner to shove a Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe in my face. He could bludgeon me half-to-death with that trophy for all I care. Give him all the money if that happens, I don't care. I'm not a good fan, I don't watch enough games and there were periods of several years where I tried to pretend I didn't care that much or pay much attention anymore...but I was lying to myself. You can't get mad about something you don't care about, after all.
I was a mod on this very board around that 2005-2008 period and it was definitely a bit Wild West-y, but I didn't feel that *most* people's agendas (I say most because I'm going to get myself in trouble if I elaborate more) permeated quite so deeply, and we banded together more against the flood of trolls that attempted to give us a virtual STD with their posting. The forum wasn't yet flooded with the worst advertising experience of any site I've ever seen and the mods couldn't hide behind Troll Stomper or whatever it's called. One of the biggest problems then on this site were the overly anal moderation (of which I myself was guilty) that ramped up around 2007 or so with the objective to exile (either willingly like myself, or unwillingly) a large group of posters across fanbases to HFBroads. Transplanted Caper was one of those posters, for example, and I will stand by my opinion that he was the best damn poster on this forum. By the time some of those policies were rescinded it was too late. The Habs board lost a bunch of really good posters that will never come back (and/or have grown out of this sort of thing.) Sens board too. I don't think I'm going full OLD MAN YELLS AT CLOUD mode here when I say I looked forward to posting here more back then than now.
I guess to summarize: Every other fanbase hates us. We shouldn't go out of our way to hate each other. When any of us are wrong, it's okay to admit that (unless you're a politician, apparently.)
Brave browser and/or adblockers, my friend.
