Lane Hutson Burgeoning Star Watch

He's really really good. I doubted Quinn Hughes too. Johnny Gaudreau(RIP) had people doubt him his whole career. These guys that have the small area movements and elite skating have always had a niche to fill. Fast hands don't always translate but the guys who know how to use them do.

Gretzky wasn't short but he was undersized, especially for the eras he played in. I truly in my heart of hearts believe The Great Red Wino is who this burgeoning star has modeled his game after, and likely how he'll be remembered after his career is over.

Burgeoning Baby Brother!

Cole Hutson:
- Lead WJC in points (first D to do so; most points ever by a US D)
- Hockey East rookie of the year; named MOP (6 pts in 2 gp) of his region -> Frozen Four next week.

Cole is also bigger than Lane at 5’11; 170 lbs.

Anyways, Lane has been really impressive in the games I’ve watched. His skill is undeniable. Here’s hoping this is the next Hughes family!

I was pushing hard for Celebrini in the Calder race, but atp it has to be Hutson with his numbers, the records he might break…

Its all secondary assists. Even his 5 goals are secondary goals so who care !
For anyone interested, Hutson has the 7th most primary assists among all defensemen.

In fact, his secondary assists are often the most impressive, since he creates so many chances from scratch. He carries puck out of his zone and through the neutral zone, before hitting a forward with a pass. Forget the team he plays for and watch this 21 year-old as a hockey fan. It's astounding.

The kid is a chessmaster. It's like watching The Queen's Gambit on ice.

Can’t stop posting about me, rent free lol. Hutson plays a similar game to Ghost I even said I thought he’d be better, but closer to Ghost than a Quinn Hughes type, not sure what the big deal is? If you’ve watched both players play they’re extremely similar, Hutson obviously has a below average shot where Ghost excels above him, Hutson has better IQ and slightly better skating before Ghosts knee surgery.
Ghost was a goal scorer, Hutson is a playmaker.

What is your argument for Ghost over Hughes? Isn't Hughes a better comparable? Having hard time understanding your logic

Cole is the more fluid skater and has more confidence to try crazy plays, Lane is the smarter of the two. Both are going to be insanely fun to watch moving forward, can't believe Washington's drafting, unreal.

Montreal is a divisional rival, but I'm never upset to see a franchise rewarded for betting on pure skill in the draft. Too many cowardly GMs still prioritize size when it's apparent the talent isn't there, and that's how you end up with Brady Cleveland in the 2nd (no, I'm not salty...).

I thought Hutson could be great (had him ranked 10th predraft which is about 9 spots too low lol), but it's easy to make the same mistake betting against those guys. I never saw Alex Vlasic having the impact he's had and wouldn't bet a draft pick on his player type which is probably just as wrong, just in the opposite direction.

I freaking love Lane Hutson.

I'm a Bruins fan and I'm incredibly jealous. Followed him since the USNTDP days and he was already special back then.

I tried telling all of my friends about this kid and no one would listen. They'd scoff and say he's too small. He was in the Hobey discussion and "didn't deserve it." (Fantilli had a great season and deserved it still).

Then in the NHL he "can't defend, can't skate backwards"

I tried telling everyone it doesn't matter, just watch him play.

Thanks for proving you don't need to be 6-0 minimum to play as a defenseman in the NHL.

Bro is actually a hockey fan

The Bruins organization was sick of keeping 5-9 defenseman who struggled in the playoffs. Krug > then Grzelcyk.

I wish Don Sweeney took another swing in that draft, the talent was so obvious. We already had successful examples of PP QBs being smaller in Boston. He was going to BU. UGH. 😭
