Boston Bruins Off Season Roster/ Cap Discussion

I hate to be the one to have to say this, but…..Poitras sucks. He will spend all of next year in the AHL. Eventually he will make his way to some why bother league and at some point he will have to get a real job. He’s a total disappointment.
I hope I’m wrong, but I doubt it.

Some sort of cheap stay at home defenseman for a third pair to pair with Lohrei instead of a guy who roams around everywhere and is constantly out of position would be needed if you keep Joki. Unless they pair Lohrei with McAvoy (they should, but not sure they will), in which case you can put any kind of D with Hampus, and get Zadorov correctly on the third pair with Joki.

Need to upgrade on Wotherspoon too he was terrible the second half of the year.

I don't necessarily disagree but who though? That guy doesn't appear to be available in free agency. Perbix maybe? Who is trading good, cheap, steady stay at home right-shot D-men?

I just don't see replacing Peeke being a priority for them. At the very least they'll need to add a better RD before they subtract one off the roster.

Like a lot of the D-men on this year's team (including Peeke and Lohrei) I think a lot of issues could be fixed with better coaching. Whatever Sacco and Leach were trying to instruct these guys into playing this past season did not work.

100% agree on the coaching aspect.

I’d take whoever the best D that is waived at the end of camp over Peeke. Hell I’d rather play Wotherspoon there instead. Not Callahan unfortunately, but you want to roll Peeke out like this again you’re asking for trouble. He makes Derek Forbort look like Nick Lidstrom.

Next year we aren't competing for a cup .... instead of dipping into a weak UFA draft class let some of the AHL D and forwards get some seasoning to 1) increase their trade value, 2) figure out what you have against the big boys, 3) keep cap space open in the event some talented disgruntled forward demands a trade mid season, 4) get another top 10 pick, 5) when we're ready to compete for a playoff spot the following year (2026-2027) the kids have a year experience. Will Pasta get disgruntled burning another year of his world class talent? Maybe but I doubt it, he's a team player...good times and bad.

Knies is a bit of a pipe dream for an offer sheet where you really don’t want to give up your first this year (which means you can’t offer him more than 4.58ish. Unfortunately I think teams will beat that).

What about Will Cuylle?? Sorry if it’s already been mentioned. Bigger wing with some decent wheels who also isn’t afraid to use that bigger frame. Only 23 and potted 20 goals and 45pts this year. And the rags have their own cap problems

Just realized the Bs don’t even have their own 2nd this offseason so I guess both aren’t realistic unless you can pull a Brian Burke and trade for them with a qualifying offer comp rather than do an offersheet ala Dougie H.

I really don't want them to roll a guy on his off-side if he's a defensive type. Ok for guys who can handle the puck better but I want those steady stay-at-home types on their natural side which is the type I would assume they'd look at to replace Peeke.

Sad to say but with them trading Carlo I think it all but guarantees Peeke is back here next year.

Am I missing something? Why can’t they sheet Knies after July 1 and use one of our two 2026 1sts? Seems like the logical solution.

I’ve been beating the Cuylle drum for anybody that will listen. The cost to acquire him would be low, and you could do a short, overpaid bridge deal to get him out the door in New York with their tight cap situation. Already an awesome 3rd liner, could be a really solid 2nd liner if he continues to improve.

Because there are only two roster spots available at goalie, and it makes no sense to trade the one who is at his all-time lowest value like Swayman, especially if you believe in him.

I don't hate moving Korpisalo, but anytime you are making a move just to arbitrarily impact change you are more likely to end up on the low end of the value.

If someone comes along and needs one of these guys and is willing to pay a fair price, let's go. Just don't force it because we need 'change'.
I’m not trying to force it for the sake of ‘change’ I’m trying to improve it because I think it has to be better, and hope isn’t a strategy.

4th line and 13th should be any combination of Duran, Kastelic, Farinacci, Marat, Kuntar, Bancroft and a depth FA. I’m also fine with signing one of Beecher/ Koepke to something around league minimum and likely waiving to PVD. I think it’s important to grab some FA’s like last year as they can be sold at the deadline like Max Jones and Brazzers if they do fine, and if not, they help fill space in PVD. Lauko had his shot, Marat is younger by a few years and could still progress. Minten is too skilled for 4th, and is likely on 3rd after camp, but helps create competition in bottom 6 either way.
You are right about Minten, he is not a 4th liner, nor do I want him on it, but am not sure anyone you named can replace Zacha, who did not have his best year, but is one year removed from 60points.

You can only use your own draft picks when making an offer sheet.

Bs have a potential top 5 pick. Also don’t have their own 2nd round pick this year. I’d say they could try to get it back but it’s a high 2nd round pick. Probably wouldn’t be worth it for what you would have to give up.

I won't go so far as to say he sucks, because from what hear and understand, the kid works hard, seems like a good kid, but unfortunately for this this thinks of him as some kind of savior, he is not, should have made the team, coming out of camp his first year that hurt him, but also agree I just do not see a NHL player, atleast to the extent that fans feel about him.

Except picks for offers sheets compensation are 2026 picks not 2025.

Offers sheets can't be signed until July 1

No one has ever said he’s a savior or anything close. He won a job outright - we all saw it. How people say they don’t see an NHL player when he performed well at the NHL level at 19 I can’t understand.

I wonder if Zadorov will try to recruit Boeser to come to Boston. I think I heard they were friends at one point.
Mittelstadt and Boeser are friendly as well, probably more so. I’m completely down with Boeser, for the right price (which is way less than he’s going to get) as long as we can acknowledge there needs to be another couple names between him and Pasta for the top players on the team. Having him as the #2 forward is not good.

Wasn't sure where exactly to put this but I'm curious what you guys think of Marat now that you've been watching him for a little over a month? Both in terms of what he brought down the stretch and what you expect from him going forward. Role/performance/etc.
He needs to shoot more.

In 18 games with the Bruins, he failed to register a shot on net in 10 of them.

His five points all came in the other 8 games.

If he shows an ambition to get to those shooting areas and show some net drive, he’ll be a productive third line player. But if he continues to battle for pucks along the boards only to immediately distribute and stay to the outside, he’ll be a productive player overseas.

I liked him. Effort, tenacity, he made some good plays, scored a couple nice goals... It kind of reminded me of Reilly Smith the year before he broke out. He was all around it, making plays, but had little to show for it. He broke out the next year. It would be nice if Khusy followed suit, he's only 22... but even if he doesn't he seems like a good energetic depth guy.
