Boston Bruins Off Season Roster/ Cap Discussion

Can we stop.

Bruce is a good coach, his time here was over, the locker room tuned him out. (Note, pretty much every player that had a problem with him has been shipped out)

But Monty, just f-ing stop with him. Bruins fans should hate the guy, he had one foot out the door from the second the season started and was coaching like he wanted to be fired. He straight up should of resigned last year and taken his dream job in St Louis.
Nah I won't stop. Maybe the coach had one foot out the door because he was a lame duck coach with no contract. Just a thought. Two very good coaches out the door while management stays in place.

They offered him an extension, he wouldn't take it.

He was going to the Blues. He decided during the Leafs series last year.

He's also not a good coach, but that's besides the point.

He absolutely is a good coach. Has been every level he's been at. You might not like him but he's a good coach. So now we're gonna blame Montgomery for most likely not taking a subpar contract extension offer. I am assuming he got a much better deal in STL. He decided he was going to STL when they still had a coach? So all along he was intent on getting fired knowing that when that happened STL would fire their coach? Tin foil hat stuff.

He didn't just good value for the good roster players, he got good value for garbage roster players too.

The Brazeau and Fredrick deals were highway robberies.
In a vacuum the value favors the Bruins, yes.

Highway robbery is a huge stretch. The Brazeau deal is just swapping bottom 6 players. I’m willing to bet all the players involved will not be on their current teams in ~3 years. We all had Khusy fever for a week, but I don’t know if he’s a long term option on a winning roster. Lauko is a personality hire at this point in his career.

For Frederic, the second is looking like a late 2nd in a top heavy draft and Wanner will not be here in 2 years. Frederic had a down year, but he’s still very much a rosterable player on a winning team.

Once again, Sweeney getting way too much credit for the deadline here.

“While understanding the criticism and anger of some in the fanbase and media, Jacobs pointed to the success of the last decade, including a Stanley Cup final appearance and the record-setting regular season of 2022-23, when he said, “it’s hard for me to wrap my head around why people call for [Neely and Sweeney’s] heads.”

totally out of touch with fans who actually want to win a Cup.

Quote of the day from @badhatharry

The “surprise resignation” on Wednesday is really just Bruins fans resigning themselves to the fact that Don and Cam are never leaving

WTF ... Charlie doesn´t get it ... can we please pull up a banner for the "record-setting-regular-season of 2022-23"? Nobody can ever mention it without thinking about the shit show they pulled up in those playoffs ...

Very good coaches don't bail on an offseason, come in with no plan for a preseason, shove their captains and bench guys like Pastrnak because they're a "lame duck".

The blues hired their, very placeholder coach directly after the bruins beat Toronto last year. Monty was very likely to be fired if they lost. It's been talked about in detail on here by people with actual sources.

An unmotivated coach due to disputes with management is not the same as not being a good coach. The point here is management is very clearly the overall problem yet the Bruins always pass it off to their fans that it's the coach.

I agree that it's likely none of the players in the Brazeau deal will be around long term. But they got 2 players that are just better players than Brazeau and a draft pick. That's a robbery even if it doesn't move the needle that much long term. Taking the chance on Khusy alone is worth it. There's room to grow there unlike Braz.

If Frederic was healthy and signed to a deal, it wouldn't of been a great deal, but the guy hasn't even really played yet. Think he played 1 game and reinjured it and is a UFA at seasons end.

You can hate Sweeney, there's reasons to. But he absolutely crushed every deal of this deadline except Marchand.

In what world is it okay a coach shows up unprepared and unmotivated. He was under contract for the year, coach the best you can for the year.

Take your hate blinders for Sweeney off for a second and realize the Monty firing isn't on him.

Did you happen to see St. Louis before he got there?

I find it funny that Jacobs is perplexed at the fans' dissatisfaction with the lack of postseason success over the past decade. Considering this is the same guy who said, "We measure success in Stanley Cups" less than a year ago.
Yep. it doesn't clearly, or they wouldn't be here.

So let's put our best foot forward knowing they were going to fire me and now not give me an extension.

He's good with vibes, look the first season he was here.

They barely made the playoffs, whatever.

Look at his defensive system here this year.

Look at his playoff performances here.

Three quick thoughts;

1/ That defence core for next season is shaky. Lindholm injury leaves a lot of doubts. McAvoy injury to a certain extent same thing. That leaves Zadorov, Lohrei, (sort of kind of) , and not much else.

2/ What is going on with the mystery Chara signing? Where does he fit?

3/ Next season we have the confluence of a son that wants to win one last time for his father and two execs under intense scrutiny to turn things around fast. Buckle up for the off-season because desperate people often do desperate things bar any future consequences.

Position on Don Sweeney's play-off success?

You don't have to defend a shitty coaching performance to criticize management. Montgomery spit the bit.

It´s still huge comedy that Bruce won the Stanley Cup the very next season.

Ah yes, that must have been the problem. Sacco provided the needed bump and the Bruins rode it out with all their guys to make a playoff push.

Oh wait, not even close. The team still stunk and they realized selling was the only option.

Does he play or coach in the playoffs?

He built 3 rosters that had a great chance and a few others that had a chance.

2019, players failed + Bruce was outcoached in the finals.
2020 Covid ruined it.
2023 Coach completely got outcoached and players choked.

For the record, I'm fine with moving on from Sweeney if you have a good replacement. But he's an average to above average GM and you can do a hell of a lot worse.

The bruins played much worse defense with a healthy roster while Monty was here than they did with Sacco until they hit the tipping point after the deadline where they were icing 3 or 4 AHL players a night.
