This is a pretty seismic change for the WNBA.
The job security in the pros is terrible. The average tenure of a WNBA coach (not counting interim) is 3 seasons; and only 11 coaches have had OVER 5+ seasons coaching one team (one of them twice).
The whole reason college coaches jump to the NBA on the men's side is the insane money. For example, the highest paid NCAA coach is making $8.53 million this season, but 16 NBA coaches are making $8 million, including JJ Reddick, who's a first-time head coach.
So JJ Redick (13 games thus far) has a higher salary than Tom Izzo (8 Final Fours).
For the WNBA to grab Lynne Roberts from Utah is a pretty significant change, because Roberts basically has job security at Utah. Eight good seasons, the last three VERY good; tied for the furthest the program has ever gone. Sure, she could have gotten fired if Utah has two bad seasons in a row, but their program history was essentially one coach for 25 years at a high-major Utah in the WAC/MWC, and five years of mediocrity transitioning to the Power 5/4, and now Roberts, who's really, really good.
