Dionne is one of the most forgotten superstars in NHL history, mostly because he played for a franchise that was irrelevant during the time period.
He might've had the worst timed peak ever. He lapped the field by big margins several times but kept facing generational talents or random career years that made his seasons look less impressive.
1976-77 | TEAM | GP | G | A | P | PPG |
Lafleur | MTL | 80 | 56 | 80 | 136 | 1,70 |
Dionne | DET | 80 | 53 | 69 | 122 | 1,53 |
Shutt | MTL | 80 | 60 | 45 | 105 | 1,31 |
Macleish | PHI | 79 | 49 | 48 | 97 | 1,23 |
Perreault | BUF | 80 | 39 | 56 | 95 | 1,19 |
If Lafleur got injured in 77 Dionne leads the league in goals, assists, wins the Ross by 25 points and it's remembered as one of the best seasons ever, but Lafleur peaked higher.
1978-79 | TEAM | GP | G | A | P | PPG |
Trottier | NYI | 76 | 47 | 87 | 134 | 1,76 |
Dionne | LAK | 80 | 59 | 71 | 130 | 1,63 |
Lafleur | MTL | 80 | 52 | 77 | 129 | 1,61 |
Bossy | NYI | 80 | 69 | 57 | 126 | 1,58 |
MacMillan | ATF | 79 | 37 | 71 | 108 | 1,37 |
Dionne is 22 points ahead of 5th in scoring, but because 3 other forwards had monster years he doesn't stand out.
1979-80 | TEAM | GP | G | A | P | PPG |
Dionne | LAK | 80 | 53 | 84 | 137 | 1,71 |
Gretzky | EDM | 79 | 51 | 86 | 137 | 1,73 |
Lafleur | MTL | 74 | 50 | 75 | 125 | 1,69 |
Perreault | BUF | 80 | 40 | 66 | 106 | 1,33 |
Rogers | HAR | 80 | 44 | 61 | 105 | 1,31 |
In 80 he outscores Lafleur by 12 points and is 31 points ahead of Perreault in 4th. Instead of this being an alltime great season Wayne Gretzky had to enter the league and tie him for the Art Ross.
1980-81 | TEAM | GP | G | A | P | PPG |
Gretzky | EDM | 80 | 55 | 109 | 164 | 2,05 |
Dionne | LAK | 80 | 58 | 77 | 135 | 1,69 |
Nilsson | CGY | 80 | 49 | 82 | 131 | 1,64 |
Bossy | NYI | 79 | 68 | 51 | 119 | 1,51 |
Taylor | LAK | 72 | 47 | 65 | 112 | 1,56 |
16 points ahead of Bossy but because of Nilssons freak season and being blown out by Gretzky this also becomes forgotten.
