I think Eberle, because it would give the team 2 years to see if Wright or Beniers are ready.

My "dark horse" is Dunn. If he had signed a 7-8 year deal with us instead of a 4 year one, I think he would have taken the spot. Last season showed how important he is to us. I also like that he leads by example. Despite his skill, he plays tough and takes no shit.

I am not sure if Dunn would accept anything less than a 7 year deal when he is up, and that will put us in a very hard spot. We already have Stephenson and Montour as 2 30 year old's with 7 year deals. I would have Dunn over either of those two but would really come down to Wrights's next deal, and maybe even Catton's.

Also picked Eberle, but considered Larsson who isnt listed. Dont really love any of the candidates tbh, they all seem a little too congenial and I like a decent edge to a captain like a Tkachuk or Marchand.

I would have gone with Larsson, but either way I don't expect us to name a captain this year.

I think they need a captain. They need a player who can get the boys going when things get hard. That was part of the problem last year too. When the players bail or are uninterested, we need a C to own the role of getting them back on track.

I like the perspective, but I wouldn't call Yanni "congenial".

I think they go 3 Alternates as well this year, and hold the C open for whichever one of the young guys steps up and starts leading the team on and off the ice.

If they extend Gourde, I could see him possibly wearing the C for a season or two, but right now, if Bylsma really wants to name a C, Larsson feels like the logical choice (however, I wouldn't entirely rule out a dressingroom guy like Oleksiak as a darkhorse in that scenario).

It has to be someone who naturally has that leadership role in the room. I know Gourde does, but he isn't extended here and there's a good chance he's traded at the deadline. Does Eberle have that role? I don't know honestly. He's not a guy who has played with any consistent edge in his career. Larsson or Oleksiak I could see it. Dunn had such a long awkward development with a lot of immature play, I still honestly don't think of him as a leader. But maybe he's already grown into that.

He is off the ice, he's the darling of the team's marketing department with all the tweets about what he wears to the rink on gameday. Marchand and the Tkachuk's arent doing stuff like that.

I am not sure I agree with you there. He is a most certainly an agitator and a good one at that. Sure he doesn't have the skill of a Marchand or plays as dirty as he does, but you can see Gourde getting under the skin of other teams all the time.

Yanni because he doesn’t take shit and isn’t afraid to mix it up if needed.

Again, I'm saying I dont think that "edge" applies to his own teammates where the guys I mentioned would slewfoot their own grandmothers.

Well, I gotta say that as the far away observer, I'm glad its not a Tk or a 63. Never saw Stammer or a Tavares cheap shot anybody. I'm all for aggressive play, up to the line. That said, I think the Krak are a class group and wouldn't benefit form a line bumper.

If we appoint a captain this year, I'm hoping it is Larsson.

Gourde has impressed most as the type of player I want as Captain, but he is entering the fringe stage of his career, and those guys are seldom named to the honour. Larsson isn't as feisty but checks off a lot of boxes in terms of hard play, consistency and leadership by example. An added bonus, he very likely could handle the pressure gracefully, something which a younger, more inexperienced player might have trouble with. For instance, I sure wouldn't want to put more weight on Beniers shoulders right now.
