Also my goodness we were so dominant in that game. We looked like we were playing an AHL team all game. The score was not as close as 6-3. We had bunches of close up scoring chances.

Let's check out the goal differential in our games.

Losses by 1 (including OT): 6
Losses by 2: 1
Losses by 3: 2
Losses by 6: 1 :naughty:

Wins by 1 (including OT): 8
Wins by 2: 4
Wins by 3: 10
Wins by 4: 4
Wins by 6: 1

Aside from winning 27 games and losing 10, the way we've won and lost is insane. We've lost 3 games by blowouts this year, and we've won 15 games by blowouts. We have won more blowout game wins than close game wins. That's incredible. I've never seen that before. We get virtually no standings boost from OT losses and from OT/SO wins. We get it done in regulation, and usually by the 2nd period.

Shane mentioned how TDA's shots from the point/blue line were at a speed and directly tippable for front of net presence vs blasts often missing net or harder to get a bead on in front.

This is the thing I notice.

Dougie had a bomb, no doubt. But when the game is really important, like a playoff game, that shot doesn't get through nearly as often, because guys will sacrifice their bodies to stop it, which doesn't happen as much in the regular season. And remember: his goal scoring numbers are predicated on volume shooting. The shot from the point is almost always there, because it's a low percentage shot.

That's fine. It's good to have a guy like that who can connect on those bombs from the blue line.

But TDA's skating is impressive, as is his ability to find space and get a shot through. He won't just bomb it; he'll take a quick step to avoid the defender and get off a wrister or a clever pass. And because his shots are wristers instead of bombs, the guys out front are much more likely to tip them in. All of that makes him much more difficult to defend, especially on the PP where you can't just get in front of the big shot.

People who say that TDA is better at defense than Dougie are just flat wrong, though. I don't know where that's even coming from.

I think a lot of that is that TDA was supposed to suck defensively, and he's actually been able to hold his own while at the same time some analytics said that Dougie was carrying Slavin, which was absurd. TDA is better than expected and Hamilton is struggling more than expected away from Slavin, but yeah, Dougie is still better. Just not anywhere close to the gap that many expected.

About that

Not accusing the team of giving directives.

It’s just an established pattern from the media personnel around this team, that they lead these campaigns against former stars who leave as UFAs. It’s a gross habit and could very well just be culturally spontaneous at this point. But it shouldn’t go public, over and over. It creates this level of negativity around what should be a positive story.

I don’t care at all about a literal handful of people on Twitter. No idea why people get mad at them and then give them an even bigger platform.

To me this isn’t a story about TDA at all, it’s a story about the Canes’ official media people continuing a pattern of burying former players who were nothing but popular when they played here.

If TDA doesn’t play ball when it comes time to talk money, you can be damned sure he’ll get the same treatment. And that’s ****ed up. People get that players sometimes leave for more money. This ongoing thing about villainzing them isn’t needed at all.

I feel like Mrazek and Faulk haven’t been buried the way Hamilton and Skinner, who has faced the sharper criticism, have.

There’s more to the story here. Maybe it’s just being close with Tripper on a personal level. Maybe it’s not that he’s being told what to say, but the access he has with his close relationships with players and coaches sheds light on why Skinner was traded for whatever the market had to offer in lieu of renting him out and the attempt to re-sign Hamilton was half-hearted at best. To the eye, both had frustrating warts that are easy to pick at (Skinner’s defense and general inconsistency/Hamilton’s defense and at times lethargic body language).

To raise their voice to point out that they, in fact, are a literal handful of people?

Yes it's stupid.

I gotta say, if TDA had just kept his mouth shut from the beginning, he would be a very popular player with everybody. You can see why he'd be a likable guy: he's funny and he's good in front of the camera. I can see why a guy like Tripp would connect so easily with him, since he's the same way.

Final thought:

The whiners on Twitter are annoying. Those that will pump DeAngelo’s tires because he’s their martyr are also annoying (it’s obvious what you’re doing).

Just enjoy watching the best team in the league at the moment, folks. Save the political/cultural commentary for a more relevant context than a pro hockey team.

According to advanced stats folks, it’s the blowouts that tell you a team’s true talent level. 1-goal games (and even some 2-goal games) usually hinge on a lucky bounce or referee’s decision. A blowout is decisive.

By your numbers, Canes are “only” up 12-7 in close games, but up 15-3 in blowout games. That’s where this team is right now.

Which is why goal differential is a telling stat. It’s not sustainable to win 1 goal games over the course of 100 games unless you have a superhuman goaltender or maybe a really really stingy and structured defense, but like you said you are only 1 or 2 bad bounces away from losing.

Scoring goals is hard so putting up 6,7, or 8 in a game is an accomplishment regardless of who you’re playing. You can’t get those goals unless you are controlling the play and getting decent chances on net.
