Post-Game Talk: NYR @ WSH Game I: An Implosion Of Modest Proportions

Just got back from the game... brutal. Staal, Clowe, Boyle, and Dorsett are very clearly missed.

LOL. Love the sig Grind Jam Grind. Sad thing is you could just see that play developing from the stands. Both guys were being lazy and not giving enough respect to the hanger. I facepalmed pretty friggin hard in real life after that crap.

Eh, tough loss considering they got the first goal. But realistically they did not deserve the win. Thought it was fairly even after the first period. But that first period was pretty bad. Outplayed, lazy plays, and got pushed around. They didn't deserve the 1-0 lead after the first. And I don't think the Caps deserved 3 goals in the 2nd. Games like that can be frustrating on both sides.

They just shot themselves in the foot a few too many times. Too many penalties. Hagelin failed to finish on yet another breakaway. I swear, with his speed, he gets so many breakaways and just ****in fails on them every damn time. Hank had some monster saves, but you just can't give up that softie. Awful defensive lapse from two guys you need to be completely solid.

That said, I didn't get the sense from that game that the Caps were dominant. Plenty of confidence still in their ability to come back and steal one on Saturday. LGR!

I actually liked the game the Rangers played tonight. It's hard to remember even a stretch last year where they looked superior to the Caps for that long. I really didnt have much expectation for us this postseason, but seeing us take it to the Caps tonight has me at least thinking we have a good shot.

Unfortunately I'd never do that.

I'm also a Mets fan

As am I. As well as a Jets and Knicks fan. I've witnessed 1 championship, by the Rangers, when I was 2 years old, and have 0 memory... so really I haven't witnessed any. But that doesn't stop me from being even keeled or realistic in my assessments of a team.

I'm sorry, but every year it's the same ****

Every year they have problems scoring goals
Every year the PP sucks
Every year they lose consistently when they go down by 2 or more goals

It shows no signs of changing. We had Gaborik AND Nash on this team and we still couldn't score!
Until I see some consistency, over a period of time, this is still, and will always be

SAME. OLD. RANGERS.

They did not dominate the game. The game itself was a very even game. Caps dominated the first 10 min. The Rangers the next 10. Caps the next 10. Then even next 20. Rangers the final 10. It was winnable. The series is winnable. Just need some lucky bounces and no more boneheaded plays/penalties.

They had equal opportunities to the Caps tonight. They hit a crossbar, missed a breakaway, were inches away from roofing a goal, and scored another goal that was clearly disallowed due to inconclusive evidence. They had many more chances that i'm not including. Lucky bounces.

They could have had 5 on Holtby tonight.

Coulda woulda shoulda

The didn't have 5 on him tonight though did they?

Horseshoes and Hand grenades

Yeah, but could you blame the guy? He's a Mets and a Rangers fan! (So am I, and although I'm not as bad, I understand it a little bit)

Ok, add Jets and Knicks for me. Its not an excuse. You can choose to look at things in a positive way or a negative way. He's clearly choosing negative. His prerogative. I just don't understand why he continues to watch since it's clearly something that angers him.

Well I'm a Rangers, Yankee, Giants and Knicks fan. The expectation of me witnessing 2 championships for Yankees/Giants has given high expectations to the other two. And it's fair, the Knicks/Rangers should be favorites with the money they spend.

You don't get angry watching the same **** over and over again?

Eh, not everybody reacts exactly the same way. For me, it's a point of pride that I can follow the teams I love and, despite the heartbreak I go through, I can still stay even keeled about it. Part of that is laughing at myself about it. But, that's not exactly easy to do, and it's even harder for some people compared to others.

And, as annoying as it can be to see a person "mourning" their teams, as someone else aptly put it, people will be fans in their own way.

I don't want to watch a team that has to rely on luck to win. I want them to make their own luck.

Valid point. And I've criticized Torts system myself for a while. But tonight was a very winnable game. This series is a very winnable series. Their team capitalized on their opportunities, ours didn't. Nash, Richards, Stepan, Cally, etc. all need to step up. They didn't. Doesn't mean they wont in future games.

As a young Giant fan I've had experience with rooting for a team where "anything can happen!" actually works in the playoffs. I've been spoiled.

It sucks missing Clowe, Staal and Boyle because they're all great along the boards and the latter two are great at getting it out of the zone cleanly. If we can get them back by at least game 3 I like our chances. I thought Moore and Eminger were our best defensemen tonight. We should take advantage of our great defensive depth and not push McD and Girardi so much. No reason either of them need to be on the PP when we have to kill so many penalties and they have Ovechkin duty.

I'm not gonna lie. I sulked for a good half hour tonight. Can't help but wonder if i'll ever get to witness a championship. I don't know how i'll react if I do. Might even shed a few tears. It'll be such a foreign feeling.

Too often we don't capitalize on chances. Far too often.

Give washington 5 powerplays and they score.
Give us a 5 on 3 and wide wide wide.

Of course I do. But my focus was on tonight's game and this series.

My focus is more on a whole. This game is just a microcosm of that. Special teams sink the Rangers again. Lack of goal scoring sinks the Rangers again. Feel like I just keep hitting rewind.

I'm tired of watching losers.

Clowe, Boyle, Dorsett, Staal are big injuries. Game was still winnable. Eminger has improved. The team as a whole played solid. Just some mental lapses. Stralman trying to get fancy. Henrik taking his eye off the puck. Danny G and Mac Truck not being aware of where Caps players were on the ice, letting one get behind them for a break away pass. Boneheaded penalties. Those things can all be worked on and fixed. I'm not too worried yet. That changes if we're still making such noticeable mental lapses midway through game 3.

Yup. I'm sure a lot of people on here are. But that's the reality of the situation. Can't change it, complaining won't solve anything, so no use in complaining. Torts system has won a cup before. He's adapting it to our players lately too. Zucc, Brass, Nash all making it more offensive. A lot less dump ins this year than last year. We just need to capitalize. We were doing it these last 7 games, guys just can't force it.

The same problems still exist though. The offense is a rollercoaster. A few good games, a few bad games. Every time. The PP hasn't been good in years. Nothing is changing. That's why it's so easy to predict these games. Nothing is changing.

Yeah, maybe a little rusty since they had games every other day for the last month. The long layoff will help us in the end though as players start to return. I'm hopeful for Staal and Dorsett for game 3. That will be big for us. I thought our PK was fantastic and did a really great job pressuring the Caps at the blue line. Callahan, Stepan and Hagelin (hell, Powe too did a great job) came up big.
