I think the Rangers are probably going to be better next year than this year. I'm betting this is just an off year for them and guys like Zibanejad bounce back next year.

I don't think their upside is that high but I think they'll be a fairly safe playoff team next year. They're going to have a lot of cap space this off-season, just because the cap is going to be going up a lot.
This….. there is going to be player movement this offseason, sure as I’m sitting here…..
Lindgren gone- Kreider 70/30 gone imo- would love if Zibby gone but might have to wait a bit on him. NMC clause and big contract isn’t the best time to have the worst statistical year of his career…… he’ll be moved, but it might take another year and his game to improve to do so…. He is still a solid 2c, but shouldn’t be a top line C…. He just can’t handle it…..- Panarin???? Prob stays til end…..
Laf/cuylle/berard/Edstrom all young and improve with another year of work…..
Perrault in the wings along with a couple other interesting prospects…..
I think Kandre miller gets traded in the offseason too…… if his brain worked, he’d be an elite pair top 2 D…. Has all the physical tools and skating….. I doubt NYR commits big $$$ and long term to him needing a new deal…..
The true fruits of this trade show at the start of next season when the changing of the guard of leadership….
If miller gets them In the playoffs this year, great…
Can always catch lightning in a bottom and ride the momentum wave…..
But this trade was mainly made for next season and the following one imo

Made for next season? Miller will be 33 next season. The Rangers traded their first (imported in 2026 if they are bottom 13 this year, which they are looking to be) for an aging guy who is on the decline. Not too sure this was a smart move for a club with an already aging and declining core.

Miller is truly a POS, that's the only plausible explanation.
Or
Canucks GM is high as a kite.

Brainlet coach had Zib on Miller’s wing in the top line
Miller should be the number one center. I see that the first game and thought that was nuts. He’s been the Canucks number one center and been damn good at it.

Ya'll got absolutely bent, full stop. I'm glad you're happy with the return, but trading away a 100 point 1C signed for $8.5m is in no world "clearing cap space." There's no better use of that money than Miller, who's one of the best value contracts around.

Getting a dime a dozen middle 6 C who's a slight breeze away from a career ending concussion, a #4 d-man who was basically a lock to get dealt by the deadline, and a prospect 75% of Canucks fans have never heard of before the trade, is nowhere near an appropriate return for a player like Miller. And that's even before taking into account that ya'll just hitched your wagon to an $11.5m malcontent who only has one single season in his entire career of ever being worth that kind of money.

Oh Miller's gunna tear apart the overpaid bitchmade Rangers just like he did to EP and it's going to be hilarious.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely hate the shitbag NBA, it's a joke of a sport and league. But that trade is interesting because it was one of a few scenarios where a team made a deal that blows past the stupidity of the Canucks here, and only 24 hours later
You’re barking up the wrong tree here. You have a lack of understanding of the situation.

You misread , Miller was the top line center . The issue is having Zib as RW1 instead of 3C where he should be

We got fleeced! Miller is a power forward, 2 way top line center who put up a 100pts last year. The return we got for him was peanuts and it sets us back a good bit. The return is what it is because everyone knew we had to move him and he has a NTC that we had to work with. Given everything that went on with it the low return was expected.

This is a very bad stain on our management group, they missed handled all of this very poorly. I also annoyed with Pettersson for coming to training camp out of shape and not ready for the season, which lead to Miller calling him out because Miller wants to win and go deeper in the playoffs. My confidence in Pettersson is near zero.
Shockingly, the Canucks only got to hold the title of biggest fleecing of 2025 for about 24 hours before the Dallas Mavericks said "hold my beer"

They got a better return for Miller than they did for Horvat or Kesler (going back).

Obviously Miller is a better player, but he's also 31 about to turn 32. Horvat was 27 when they traded him & Kesler was 29 I believe.

The return isn't a premium but I'd say its also not a fleecing, Pettersson is a good top 4 defenseman, Chytil & Mancini have potential to be good everyday players. Getting out of his contract (aswell as Desharnais/Heinen) is part of the upside too.

Weren't both Kesler and Horvat roughly 1 year (or less) away from UFA? Both signed market value contracts with their new teams. Miller is a better player and he's signed long term at a cap hit well below what he provides.

Do you view Millers contract as a negative or a positive? The AAV is fantastic, but the term is another story. He's signed till he's 37. You definitely want the next 3ish years, probably not the last 2. I suppose you could make the case either way.

And yes, Kesler had another year remaining on his deal, & Horvat was a 'rental' whom NYI acquired to sign immediately.

Miller is (for now) better than Horvat. Kesler was a much better player than both.
I liked Kesler a lot but Miller is much better.

Oh it's absolutely a positive. He's $3-4m underpaid right now and for the foreseeable future. He has a long ways to go before he regresses to an $8m value, and with how astronomically the cap is projected to grow, $8m becomes worth less and less which extends his window as a valuable contract.

People have been referring to it as a negative value contract since it was signed, which is mind blowing. Compare that to someone like EP, who has a long ways to improve before he's worth his $11m cap hit, if he ever gets there.

Kesler scored 40 and was a Selke winner. He was one of the best 200 foot players in the league. Miller is a good offensive player. He’s only decent defensively.

Oh for sure, but Kesler's best years were well before the trade. Miller is in his prime now, which is better than Kesler was when he was dealt to Anaheim

Miller is a good player. He has all the tools. He will put up points, that’s for sure.

Kesler never cost us games, his defensive coverage was always elite. Miller can be a defensive liability.

yes why take a pt per game PF on a great contract and try and compete when he might get old one day.
Whats the smart play?

And Kesler also never won as many games as MIller did.

Kesler was a malcontent who took bad penalties dove and ran a line often referred to as the helicopter line and now he's somehow morphed into Patrice Bergeron

New York will have an awesome player for the first bit. When Miller is on, he is lights out nearing the top 15 centers in the league. Faceoffs, grit, scoring, leadership its all there. The problem will be when the lustre wears off, and he doesn't feel the constant need to motor.

You know sometimes you'll watch a guy phone it in for a game or two and come to the conclusion they are only invisible and don't really help the team? When Miller decides to phone it in he actively costs the team. He actively gives up on plays, and his demeanor trickles through the lineup like it or not.

He doesn't always have those games, and like I say, when he's on his game he's so underrated it hurts, it's just those few times he decides to not show up that you just completely question whether he even likes hockey

The smart play for the Rangers is to not trade away a first that is very likely going to be an unprotected one in 2026. Not for a player who will be 33 that year. Miller is good though, so the price was high.

You're 100% right...too bad Chris Drury is the GM and "smart" isn't part of the equation.

You dont just dip your toes in the water....if you're going in GET IN.

Nothing worse than going half way

Miller didn't cost them squat considering how good he is. Chytil is easily replaced in free agency
