If Soucy ends up stapled to the top pair, that's a huge problem and incredibly frustrating. One step forward, one step back.

If the plan is to play Miller-Fox for 25+ minutes a night and Soucy on the 2nd or 3rd pair, it's not ideal but it's whatever.

I would say any permutation that has 25 minutes of 79-23 is ideal.

Why was keeping De Haan or Jones as the much cheaper option for the 3rd pairing not a consideration in your estimation? Why are we paying 5.5M for a bottom pairing? Completely unnecessary.

If Drury comes out after the trade deadline and says, "We think Soucy is going to the perfect guy to give us depth on the bottom pair," then, while I still think this move was pointless given who was already here, it's ultimately whatever. But based on the way the team has operated, I'm not expecting that to be the case.

I have no idea why, maybe there’s something unique about him defensively that can’t be quantified by the numbers we have. On the other hand he’s terrible offensively to the point where his relGF% has been in the toilet with Vancouver. Am I supposed to celebrate that this is the guy who is likely going to be Fox’s partner the rest of this season and next season? Another defenseman who is completely deficient in transition and in the offensive zone playing on the top pair? You could make the same argument for Lindgren that you are making for Soucy and Lindgren was actually plying top pairing minutes. Up until this season Lindgren’s numbers were just as good defensively in both GA/60 and xGA/60. Ironically both are having terrible seasons this year. Actually Lindgren is having a much better season defensively according to xGA/60 relative to teammates. Why didn’t we just keep Lindgren?

Why would you expect the VAN3-6 defenseman to have good relGF% considering a huge portion of their off-ice time is Quinn hughes on-ice time? Every single defenseman on the Canucks outside of Hughes and his partner Hronek has had a negative rel GF% since last year (500+ mins).

Is he terrible offensively or are the poor stats a reflection of being used in a defensive role largely with the teams checking line? His most common center both this year and last year was Pius Suter.

Lindgren was putting up those numbers in front of a Vezina winning goalie who has a .918 save percentage in that timeframe. He was also stapled to Adam Fox Soucy has not played in front of anyone close to that level outside of Demko for one season. He was not stapled to Quinn Hughes. Bit of a difference.

I think there is a lot more nuance to defensive play that just looking up someone's charts and models. I think this is too reactionary. All I know for absolute certain is that when he's on the ice the other team hasn't scored much. And that they can very easily recoup the pick next year if they don't extend him before then. Teams at the deadline always want big physical dmen.

Things missing in the model can make a HUGE difference. It's not necessarily negligible. Take this baseball article from 2019. WAR Update: Catcher Framing! They added in pitch framing to catcher WAR and you saw enormous differences. Some guys like Ryan Doumit went from looking like solid above average players to among the worst in the league overnight. Simply due to the addition of one missing factor from the model. Who is to say that defensive models wouldn't do the same with the addition of new data?

We're going to have to wait and see. Great size---so I looked him up on hockey fights and practically every fight he's gotten into he's lost by almost unanimous opinion. I don't think I've ever seen that before.

The other thing is I'm not sure who he's in for. Jones? Vaakanainen? de Haan? Jones has been playing really well and is the best power play option amongst our D. But maybe Drury's going to move him anyway.

This is why I don't get this trade. If Drury wants Soucy to be Fox's partner, it's terrifying. If Drury wants him as a 3rd pairing guy, he's redundant since we already have Vaak, Jones, de Haan who all have a lower cap hit.
